It's always rather exciting to see a new cafe open in your neighbourhood. So when Project281 opened up in an underused corner of Brunswick I made sure to pay it a visit.
The first thing you will notice when you walk in the glass doors is the industrial design aesthetic. Think plain painted bricks walls, concrete, steel. The ceilings are high and the space is large. To soften the vibe there are numerous leafy indoor plants. Was greeted with a smile and given a choice about where to sit.
I ordered a short macchiato, which shortly arrived in a small cup .. similar in appearance to a liquid chocolate easter egg. Quite unique. Coffee was a little over roasted for my likings though, hence a touch bitter. It's a new roastery so this might change as they hone their technique.
Korokke Benedict was my choice food wise (smokey brisket hollandaise, charred pepper, goats cheese, tonkatsu, pickled something, garden herbs). First things first it looked beautiful, colourful and intriguing. The 2 poached eggs were well cooked, sitting on top of two rather large crumbed potato cakes. Definitely had a japanesey flavour (bonito perhaps), the outer coating was light and crispy. But as I ate more I felt there was too much potato in each bite .. maybe the it should have been thinner, or something added with the potato to give it more texture.
Only opened a week ago - so might take a bit of time for them to get into the groove. I like that they're trying some new ideas, worth giving them another try but I'll wait a few months.
Wifi - no but on its way according to staff.
Newspapers - no.
Music - Not sure if they're trying to be ironic but it was very prominent and they were playing 80s/90s (bit like Gold104 without ads), not my cup of tea for a cafe. Feel the ambiance would have benefitted something more electronic or background. read more
