Freedom Service Dogs rocks as an organization!!…read more They rescue dogs from shelters and custom train them to help people with a wide range of disabilities. I started out volunteering here because I wanted to take service dogs for visits to nursing homes. They also partner with a DU counseling MA to pair the students with a therapy dog. One amazing bi-product of this program is that a dog has to be *really* special to make it through the program and meet the requirements to become a therapy dog. As a result, they put lots of pups up for adoption that FSD has trained (at least house-broken and know a sit command) and have less of a likelihood to be aggressive towards other animals or towards people. The people that are involved in this organization are awesome, I strongly recommend getting involved as a volunteer, or checking them out the next time you want to adopt a dog :0)

I entered the program seeking support for PTSD and expected a trauma-informed environment. Instead, I experienced situations that felt triggering and did not feel supported when challenges came up. The structure of the program felt rigid, and there did not seem to be enough flexibility for someone actively working through trauma. The hardest part was being awarded a service dog and then having it taken away. That was not only upsetting, but it also felt destabilizing after investing emotionally in the process. I believe organizations working with PTSD should prioritize understanding, flexibility, and meeting clients where they are. That was not my experience here. I would encourage others to ask very specific questions about how PTSD is supported before committing to this program.
