Hit up the Women's Bean Project and fulfill all three ideals at the same time. My only regret is that I didn't start shopping here eons ago. My guess is the end-of-year holidays is the busiest time for them, based on the flurry of activity I saw in the warehouse when I stopped by last week, although you can support them year round by shopping online or at King Soopers. You can get edibles like cornbread and brownie mix, salsa and other dip mixes (garlic, dill), exotic flavored instant teas, their signature soup packets, coffee beans, chocolate-dipped espresso beans, jelly beans, gift sets, and a lot more I can't remember right now! They also sell tempting handmade jewelry as well. As someone who (in a past life) used to make a lot of jewelry by hand, I can tell you they are high quality and well-made. Women's Bean is based in an old firehouse on Curtis street, which is super interesting to look at. Production happens downstairs, with the 'showroom' and shopping upstairs. You'll likely see people assembling gift baskets and making jewelry. So, grab a basket, load up, and finish that holiday shopping! P.S. Interested in volunteering? Check out their website and hit them up - they are always looking for help.

Some people end up homeless due to the economy, others for various reasons but if there wasn't an organization like Stout Street there wouldn't be an outlet for many of these homeless individuals to receive care. I am impressed by Stout Street as they provide preventive care, and if a person needs a hospital they help homeless people any age group from 0 - 99 get CICP which is state insurance, they will even do it at the clinic as they understand that homeless people do not have much money. They also provide free dental care through a lottery once a month, that if your number gets called you can get cleanings, tooth cleaning, root canals and cavity fillings if your homeless for free. They also provide a low income eye clinic and provide glasses which again is provided through a lottery system. If a person needs preventive care, or care that is needed right away that is not severe enough for the ER but one still needs to still a doctor or if one needs mental health care, one can be seen, however it again is all seen through a lottery. They provide prescription drugs to almost all there patients if they do not have insurance or only have CICP, if a patient has medicare or medicaid, they will send them to Denver Health to pick up there script. Once a homeless person is set up with all medical and or mental health care and any other services that have already been listed, they also provide case management, housing application and housing case management, government payee (SSI & SSDI), and clothing on occasion. It is amazing what this place does as they care for thousands of homeless people every week and they treat them like humans and not like "homeless" population like the rest of the city does. This place really does care about the homeless population and has been a leader in the Denver Metro area for the past 20 years. The try to solve homelessness and try to solve to help those get on there feet and not be homeless for there entire life. This place is truly a stepping stone for those who need that sort of help but do not know where to turn. If you know someone who is homeless, is on the streets, sleeping on various couches, not really having a home of there own, and needing medical care of some sort this is the place to go. This place helps those who are indigent and homeless in the city and county of Denver who would not have these services available otherwise would have no where else to go. This is amazing network and association that I believe in, I think more people should know about this non profit association and I have found out about them and all about them as I have donated to them over the years and have seen the work they do and the people they help. In my book this organization is best of yelp for non profit!

They advertised this program as a program that helps you land the job you want, however it just turned out to be another generic job-readiness program that just puts you in whatever job they have available rather than what career you want and what your background is actually is. With the high-energy entrepreneurial people running the program, you would think they would have stronger career advice to give and be able to help you with a more individualized approach, but unfortunately they do not. The training class was pretty fun and engaging for the most part, and the teacher Cedric was a great speaker. However, what I had an issue with was how a huge percentage of the class was spent training us on warehouse safety and how to use a forklift. I'm sure that's great for people who actually want to work in a warehouse, but for everyone else it's a waste of time (so my recommendation is for them to hold the forklift training during a different time for the people who want it). I know for a fact that I'm never in a million years going to work a blue-collar job. I found it a bit insulting, because they get a lot of people signed up for the program from homeless shelters, rehab clinics, and those previously incarcerated, so it came across like they were talking down to us and assuming warehouse work is the only thing we would be qualified for or willing to do. And from my experience, warehouse jobs are pretty in-demand and they hire pretty much anyone desperate for a job. My feedback for this program would be to stick to their word about helping us land in the career we like, and do a better job meeting everyone where they're at in their career.

I worked with the volunteer engagement coordinator to list some specific criteria for our volunteer day (i.e. No strenuous activities such as Habitat for Humanity, what times we would be available, our preferred volunteer activities). Within 2-3 weeks, the coordinator emailed me several volunteer opportunities. I then had my coworkers vote. We opted to serve dinner at Urban Peak, a shelter for homeless youth. The coordinator then presented us with several available dates and we selected our date. The coordinator even sent me a reminder on the day before our volunteer date. Up until this point, everything was great. But then I arrived at Urban Peak. They had no idea that we were coming. It was incredibly lucky for me that Urban Peak didn't have any other volunteers to serve that evening, and so we were still able to volunteer. However, it would have been humiliating for me, as the person scheduling the corporate volunteer day, to have to tell my coworkers that their services were not needed if Urban Peak could not have accommodated us. The fact that this was left to chance is unacceptable. Due to this, I will not be using the United Way to schedule a corporate volunteer day in the future. EDIT: I've been informed that the error occurred on Urban Peak's end and the United Way was not at fault. I would highly recommend their services if you are planning a corporate volunteer day.

The director said the cat she was interested in wasn't up for adoption yet and she would have to wait. After many days of my mom calling and talking to the lady she basically said that the cat was already hers she just had to wait for him to be available. Today my mom called the shelter again and the director said THAT THEY GAVE THE CAT AWAY!!!! my mom was so devastated. We just lost our family dog and she was so excited and looking forward to getting a new cat. The director said it was because they had heard my mom say she was going to make it an outdoor cat, WHICH IS COMPLETELY FALSE. first, my mom would never do that. She specifically wants a cuddly indoor kitty as a companion, second the shelter specifically said she cant have an outdoor cat and my mom agreed with that part of the contract.
