I just think this establishment shouldn't be charging $40 for a haircut. I just moved into downtown Hartford and was hoping this place would become my "spot." But it's worth it to me to drive back to West Hartford to my old place. You can only cut my hair one way so $40 plus tip seems tone deaf to me, especially for downtown. I didn't even bother to ask if there was a senior discount. Good luck to this place. If they can get it, more power to them. I would have stayed if it was $30. read more

My g/f and I took a quick jaunt down to Hartford from Boston for Valentine's weekend since neither of us had really set foot in Hartford before and only driven by. We got up Saturday morning, had a nice breakfast at our hotel and decided to go out exploring. I was wearing a mop on my head and in desperate need of a haircut. With so little time during the week I thought it would be the perfect time to try out a new spot and after walking by the spinning barber shop pole on the street, this looked like the perfect spot to do just that. We walked in and we were greeted by Danny who asked if I had an appointment. Thinking a barber shop wouldn't be busy on a Saturday morning, I said I didn't and he replied I may be out of luck. After thinking about it for a few seconds, he looks down at his over half eaten bagel and says, "well you're lucky you caught me on my lunch break, I can take you quickly". I was ecstatic! I had walked in hoping for a neck shave as well as a haircut but we established quickly enough there wasn't enough time for both so I had to choose one or the other. After realizing the mop was more important to get rid of, I choose the $25 hair cut. At first, you would think $25 was a little steep but for one, you are in an urban area so that is to be expected and two, this isn't your typical buzz style haircut. Danny took his time with me, probably a little too long since the person who had an appt had to wait an extra 20 min until I was finished. We joked the whole time about how he was the only Boston sports fan in the shop and that there was a huge, bitter rivarly between all the guys. He had a Boston sports shrine by his chair which I loved and the place itself is incredible for its overall retro feel. Apparently, it has been around since the 1920's when they purchased it from an old barber who had it in his family for two generations. The interior is a 10/10 and I'll post some pictures of it if I can. The haircut was top notched and not your typical $8 buzz from any other barber or $12 for a mall job. Like I said before, he took his time, used a straight edge razor on the back of my neck (blood was drawn, giving this haircut the oh so manly feeling). A little sting from estringent never hurt nobawdy. At the end, he used a retro massage machine which looks like a modern day sander and gave my back a nice rubdown. It was a funny touch to the end of the entire experience. They serve beer and retro soda as well as fine cigars. He gave us free strawberry soda on the way out which was really nice of him. A combo neck shave and haircut is going to run you about $75 with tip so be prepared to lay down some coin but if you love a retro feel to something and a laid back guy giving you the full treatment in an old time barber shop, this is the place for you. Apparently Joe Lieberman still gets his haircut here so that is saying something. The entire experience was highly recommended! read more

I picked out this barber for my boyfriend last year, was not too happy with the results. So, we decided to try again once his hair grew out. Today, he had an appointment for 11 a.m at the temporary location. He described on the phone what type of hair style he wanted before making the appointment. He was told they could achieve his desired look, a traditional skin fade with a scissor trim on top. He's going out of town for work and wants to look professional. Once he got there, sat in the chair, and spoke to the lady that cut his hair the first time, she said she could not do a skin fade (not what was said on the phone) and she asked around the barbershop. No one else knew how to do this hair cut. He even provided reference pictures. Very disappointed. We ended up booking with someone at very last minute in Holyoke, Ma. read more

The barber shop is very nice and beautifully decorated. The overall haircut looks good however it wasn't exactly what I wanted. I asked to show a picture and was told the stylist refuses to look at pictures. As well as he cut my neck in multiple places and then proceeded to tell me it was my fault because my skin is too sensitive. Also the cashier was vaping openly in the air. The old expression of you get what you pay for, rings true here. It costs more than a mall hair salon place, but I appreciate the service and quality. This is an old-time barber with modern feel with TVs at every station and even beer on tap (for free!) if that's your thing. They use a straight-edge razor for the back of the neck, a hot towel, and even a quick shoulder massage with the machine. Both Rob and Chris have done a great job on my hair for many years and I'm in and out in 30 minutes. Overall, highly recommend this place. read more

Only came here because the location is super convenient and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of haircut I got. It was a little pricey but they make it worth it. The First Lady I talked to couldn't help me because she doesn't do skin fades but she recommended me to another gentleman who did a fantastic job and took his time to perfect the cut. Went in and Said I was looking for JUST a haircut a while ago and the barber decided to edge my beard(I maintain my own beard so it was no work at all) and finished with a hot Towel treatment without asking me, I assumed it was complimentary until I was charged nearly 60$ I'm all fine treating myself once in a blue but If you are going to charge for a service ask me before hand. Thats like me taking my car to fix a broken headlight and the shop saying "by the way we changed your oil, breaks, and slapped on some fresh winter tires for you while we had it, here's the bill." might not have been as mad if it was actually a good haircut. I have had my hair cut by both Rob and Mark at this point and cannot say a single bad thing about them. My hair sits weird on my head and even if I have let it grow for four months, I always walk out with a hair cut that makes me feel like I'm not 12 any more. I had daniel by recommendation of my buddy, jeff, he wasnt wrong in his judgment either. now to everyones defense, my first run at this cut came out horrible. almost mulletesque. I was glad that dan was able to see me again and cure my ailing hair. the beard trim was 15 bucks, and while a nice touch, I can do the same thing at home. No scalp massage, but they do this thing with the clippers to simulate a back massage, not the ideal, but still a nice touch. all in all it was expensive but if you were a downtown power lawyer/broker/insurance guy looking for a quality cut, check them out. read more

The Professional Barber Shop is the place I always find myself if I'm in the need of a little manly "me" time. Walking into the shop from the Pratt Street storefront brings you into a fusion of old-school barber shop and modern lounge area. Each of the barber's stations has quality, old-school leather chairs and all the other accoutrements you would expect/remember from going to the barber with your father or grandfather. Each also has a small flat-screen TV so that you can watch a program and chat about it if you'd like. The signature service that first brought me here is the straight razor shave and it remains a reason to head there even if you don't need a cut. There's not too many places around that offer that in the area and of the others that I have tried Professional Barber Shop has been consistently the best. The waiting area is a leather couch, a kegorator where you can pour yourself a complimentary beer or three and a spread of magazines next to the cash register/cigar sales counter. Each of the barbers working there is full of personality and has a great attention to detail and their craft. They remember you even when you only get out there once or twice a year and make you feel welcome. Between talking with the employees and the other patrons, a trip here is always worth it and one of the few places where a group of gentlemen can just relax and enjoy the company of the people around them. One final note - we stopped here before my wedding and my father in law has mentioned a few times that he needs to come visit my wife and I from Ontario specifically to stop by and spend some time at the store. read more

I went in as a walk-in but they recommend appointments because they get pretty busy. The guy who cut my hair (Paul) was extremely nice, competent and definitely listens to what you want. The price range is about what you would pay to go to a stylist (haircuts are $25) but the quality matches the price. An old fashioned barber shop down to the minute details. Get your hair cut the way you want it; have a complimentary "adult" beverage (beer). Everyone likes a hot lather neck shave and hot towel which are always found in such establishments, but they also add a hand-vibrating shoulder massage. Bring your kids, but be aware they do have mens' magazines (the tame kind like Playboy) in the waiting area. I have no issue with that but if you're uncomfortable you might want to leave the kids home. No big to me, but I understand other points of view. Can be a bit pricey, but worth it. Overall it was one of the best haircut experiences I've had anywhere. I usually go with the typical $20 supercuts hack job that does the job but I came in because my beard needed some TLC. It's a man cave meets barbershop with a very comfortable atmosphere. I was disappointed that they didn't have the usual beer on tap but I can deal with it because the wait wasn't long. Mark was great. He was really personable and not awkward as we all know haircuts can sometimes be. Above all I really liked how he took his time and didn't rush me out the door. Gave it a swing while I was on my lunch break. Like the offer of the beer and cigar thing - just sucks I kinda found out about it after my cut was almost done. Got the tour after the cut too. Lol just seemed a little backwards. It was a little on the pricey side too, but if I got a beverage at the beginning I think it would have been not so much wallet shock when I got the total - and was embarrassing that I didn't realize they didn't take cards (luckily I had cash). They were very attentive to my requests and made sure I was happy with the cut. The shop is also located on a great street. They are also a bunch of right-wing nut jobs; my barber and the guy next to me couldn't stop talking about the smear campaign against Trump and railing against Hillary. I used to go here all the time to see former barbers that are no longer employed there. The premise of the place sounded like a place full of potential. My former barber always did an amazing job but the rest of the experience was surreal. The owner hired a woman to be their cashier/gopher/eventually target. The owner would belittle her to the point where it was awkward while she was sweeping up or answering the phone. I'm not saying that this woman was the best at her job but it said a lot about ownership. Either he wanted someone to pummel verbally or couldn't find any better talent. The location, the back lounge and the staff for the most part were great. It's disheartening and pathetic to see where this has gone. I'll drive 30 minutes north for $10 less. Even better, whether it's after working there or posting a review you're sure to be harassed online by the owner. Had my first time today at professional barbershop and am very surprised at how good a haircut they gave me. Parsons took me in right away even though I showed up 20 mins early to my appointment. He was very knowledgeable about what he could do to my hair and what he couldn't based on my past haircut style. He even recommended what he could do next time to my hair to get a new look. Nonetheless he made me not even recognize who I was. I felt confident with my new look. Although the time for the haircut and beard trim took a little over an hour and a half, he took his time and explained everything he was doing, he even entertained me by telling stories of his childhood and me vice versa. For the price I highly recommend going here as they end up telling you how to maintain your look if you don't, they are confident and attentive and the atmosphere is relaxed and chill, as if your hanging out with long time buddies. On top of that there are some added services associated in the price, such as hot towels, gel, straight razor touch up that makes the price well worth it. I scheduled an appointment with Professional Barber Shop for my boyfriend for some pre-Valentine's Day pampering and I have to say he loved it. The woman on the phone taking the appointment was very nice. I requested a haircut and a straight razor shave with Chris, which came to approx. $55 total. My boyfriend stated how he loved the hot towel massage and his face came back as smooth as a baby's butt. His haircut also came out nice and even, and should last him awhile.
