What makes this farmers market so special is that there's truly something for everyone. Many of the produce vendors have been staples for our family for years. You can find fresh vegetables, eggs, local crawfish, chicken, meat, bread, pastries, plants, dates, flowers..you name it, and it's probably there. The vendors are always welcoming, and there's such a great sense of community. It's wonderful to see so many people coming together to support local farmers, makers, and small businesses. These are a bit drier and denser than the other tofu products. They are wide and thin...almost ribbonlike. They're a byproduct of the tofu-making process. Rather than toss them, there's a vender here that bags these irregular bits and sells them, cheap. I like them because the are a bit chewy and textured. They don't fall apart during cooking. They hold up to being sliced in shorter pieces and stir-fried. One bag is enough for several meals Many bargains can be found here if you're adventurous enough to try new-to-you fruits and veggies. I recommend making a pass-through of the whole market before making purchases. Prices can vary from vender to vender. You can save quite a bit of money getting your produce here rather than at the regular supermarket produce department. That's if you are flexible in which veggies you purchase. This place tends to have all sorts of asian veggies and only a few of the more common ones.

It's really nice walking through before it gets too crowded, and the popular vendors will still have your favorite items if you get to them early. We like to bring our dog and walk through the market and then walk through Midtown and Downtown and it's so fun to grab a drink, get a few ingredients for weekend meals, maybe a snack and support local. There's a good mix of farm fresh produce and flowers, some eggs and meat options, baked goods, dips, condiments, and seasonings, plus shopping like clothes, gifts, jewelry, and even house plants. Honestly, this market has a bit of everything. Live music- yeah they have it! I feel so lucky whenever we walk through the market because it brings everyone together and highlights a lot of what makes our city so special.

THE SETUP Being a seasonal endeavor, whenever this market pops up in the Cesar Chavez Plaza (across from Sacramento City Hall), it's the perfect place for someone like me who *haunts* the nearby Downtown coffee shops, or even to grab something fresh while I'm grabbing some Falafels at the eatery kitty-corner to the market. CONVENIENCE With buses shooting down J Street (for me, BUS 30 and the BUS 38), I also benefit from a quick exit from the Downtown region to get back home to Midtown. The stone fruit was plentiful, but the ones we tried had been picked slightly green and were still hard. Still, worth a stop, especially if you're working in the area and it's convenient to stop by during lunch.
