My daughters started going to this School more than five years ago. The instructors are excellent,…read morepatient, and kind. Recently they both received their black belts. I cannot explain how powerful this experience has been for them - it has made them more confident, attentive, disciplined, and courageous. This is not a belt-mill, where the school basically just pushes kids through the system to charge as much as they can as quickly as they can. Every belt level, and every stripe on each belt is earned through hard work, dedication, and testing. Enrolling was inexpensive, and we were never pressured into any program. We chose a program after it was obvious my two daughters were really having fun and learning a ton. Eventually, the girls decided that they wanted to go for their black belts and I couldn't be prouder of them. The new studio is quickly taking shape, and the owners and staff are extremely dedicated. The head instructor, Stan Riser, is an amazing human being. While he demonstrates a great sense of humor - his instruction is serious and his teaching methods are beyond reproach. As the girls rose in belt levels everything got more intense, interesting, and more fun for them. UMA Centerville participates in many tournaments throughout the year (and encourages their students to compete) and some of my most amazing memories are of their performance in these competitions. We tried two different schools before we found this one, and we are lifers - the girls still love to go as much as their schedules allow. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about having their children, or themselves, study martial arts to come in a watch a class or two and see what you think. I believe you will be impressed.

This is a community of awesome people!…read more A friend of mine recommended Striking Institute when I decided I should learn some self defense so if ever under attack I'd be able to get away and/or beat the crap out of them. I'm not quite there yet, I could probably really destroy my attacker if they were 3 feet tall and 103lbs...I'm working my way up to annihilating a full blown adult. What started as maybe a short term thing turned into a membership for several months now. The coaches are some of the nicest people around and they know their stuff, they're actual fighters, not gym instructors (no shade), and you have pros training all around you. They make it fun, informative, and super comfortable for newbies that may have some anxiety going in. The other members are always welcoming as well and giving you tips if you're interested. There's a variety of classes, bags, drilling, clinch, pads, sparring etc. I've got an injury, but I'm given alternative striking options in each of the classes, it's great. The only thing I don't like is getting punched in the face with my eyes wide open, it's quite unpleasant. But that's my own fault and it's not like they hit you at full force...at least the coaches did their job and drilled the "keep your eyes open" part into me. Anyway, if you're searching for a place to get started, go here.

Whether it's just me and a trainer or it's filled with a handful of people working out. From the lighting, to the music and layout, TightenUp just gives you the energy to get a good workout in while keeping it fun. The people who are part of this gym might be my favorite. It's such an encouraging group who are striving to be their best (and strongest) selves. I could see how this gym could be intimidating if you don't workout, but trainers like Colton and TJ are amazing at laying out the plan and keeping you lifting heavier than before. I'd say my personal favorite was working with Colton - he's always improving my form and giving tips on how to get the absolute best workout in! I love the critiques so I can be aware of how to improve and be even more confident when I lift solo. Big fan.

It's so helpful having a person trainer because then I know if I'm doing something correct and they also push me to go harder! When I work out I usually do the bare minimum and never push myself. So it's so helpful someone is there to tell me to grab heavier weights and finish strong. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone at any fitness level! I started off with literally no experience of working out, but now I love it!
