I did the one week trial period which was roughly $30 and you get a pair of boxing gloves. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, I did a few kickboxing classes, Muay Thai and tried MMA for the first time! They make the whole experience not intimidating for first timers like me and the gym itself was so spacious! The instructors were all very knowledgeable and friendly. I would definitely consider coming back again but it was a long drive for me so that one reason why I stopped going. The only recommendation I have is make sure you arrive at least 5 minutes early to all your classes, especially if they are in the afternoon because the parking lot fills up quickly! read more

Recently, I completed the 6 week challenge, which gave me the motivation to come back and start attending classes again. For the challenge we were to attend kickboxing classes 3 times a week. Originally I was signed up for Muay Thai, as I found it to be an interesting art, but after the challenge, I found I enjoyed the kickboxing a lot and signed up for that instead. I was worried about finding time to attend, but they have so many classes on their schedule that I can always find a class that matches my schedule, no matter how much my schedule changes week to week. While I worked the fair, I was able to attend morning classes. When I went back to my normal work schedule they had a class almost every night of the week. The coaches are absolutely phenomenal. Being that there are so many classes, there are also a few coaches, and they all teach their classes differently, while still changing it up from class to class. Not only are you getting a satisfying workout, but you are getting a variety that promises you'll never get bored. As for the people, they are all very friendly. Although I attend classes alone, there is always somebody to practice with. Often we end up pairing up, and if you didn't bring a friend you'll have to make a new friend. I have not had one bad experience with all of the people I have worked with. As great as a place is, if the people aren't friendly, then it basically becomes a chore to attend. I actually find myself looking forward to attending classes and meeting new people. Overall, I would highly recommend taking a look at this gym. The classes are great and flexible; the coaches are knowledgeable and helpful; and the people are extremely friendly. UPDATE 9/11/19- 11 months later and I still find myself getting excited to attend classes everyday. In fact, sometimes I dread holidays or vacations due to the classes I'd have to miss. I've started many hobbies and quit after a month or two because I was bored or just didn't feel like I belonged. Here I feel like everyone is so inclusive and welcoming. I've expanded from kickboxing and Muay Thai into Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and am loving it just as much as the other two. Unfortunately, this does mean I do have to cut back on one of the other two in order to participate, but that's what I get for wanting to try everything. One important thing to note is that The Cellar is not just for the combatants looking to get into the or improve their fighting prowess. Yes, if that is what you're looking for, this place is amazing, but for an average Joe, Jill or whoever, this is a good place to meet new friends and get in a fun workout. P.S. Float like a butterfly, sting like a... nope. This butterfly has no sting, but this is where I could learn. I went through the free intro lesson with instructor Ryan before trying the kickboxing class. So glad I did. This is no cardio kickboxing at LifeTime Fitness. You are punching and kicking pads held by another person and technique is important. Ryan did a great job making sure I had the correct form. Justin taught my first kickboxing class, which was a blast even though this butterfly somehow got paired with an experienced, strong, tall beast. She reined blows on the pads I tried to hold, and I could tell she was really holding back while almost knocking my arms off. My whole body was sore. I love that feeling of muscle creation! The gym is clean, well designed and the staff is enthusiastic. Jen was super friendly and informative. I can't wait to go back and really learn how to use my stinger! While this may be a biased review - I've been going to this place for a little over 9 years as of this review. That enough should be a testament to how good the Cellar Kickboxing is. Way back when I was a college student, ignoring the gyro smells, I descended into the "cellar" of Joe's Market & Deli - and I was welcomed into a cool "fight club"-like gym (minus the Tyler Durden anarchy). The Cellar Kickboxing gym has now evolved into a world-class training facility. Kru Chris "Dead-On" Cichon (and his team) have mastered the art of physically pushing anyone who comes in here, while somehow making them return, begging for more. Sure, you'll be trained by current/former team USA kickboxing captains and trainers, and the occasional MMA stars come through, and many of the fighters rack up wins like we're taking Ivan Drogo's lunch - but don't let that scare you. No douchey cobra-kai bro's here. Work ethic, discipline and respect - Mr. Miyagi would be proud. If you'd like to get fit in a laid-back, incredibly intense and respectful institution - this would be my choice. Never punched a thing in your life? No problem. Been a martial arts practitioner all your life? Even better. Just want to get shredded while perving on ladies in yoga pants - mmm, maybe look elsewhere? My friend Matt.G's review really helped me get an understanding of how things work at this place. I tagged along with Matt for my first class, which is free, put on my loaner gloves and had a great first experience. The instructors Justin and Chris are really good at what they do. They are martial arts experts and it clearly shows. Now, I am a monthly member at The Cellar and can't tell how happy I am with my decision. The workout is kickass. The techniques you learn are perfect. The atmosphere is great. Very friendly people all around. Never knew losing weight would be such a breeze. I don't mean to say the classes are easy but they are definitely fun and the one hour you spend at The Cellar will result in burning at least 700 - 800 calories. The class schedules are very well planned too. Evening classes work best for me. Kickboxing and Muay Thai classes are on Mon and Wed evenings at 5:30 - 6:30 and Tue and Thu evenings at 6:30 - 7:30. Fridays classes are at 4:30PM which is a little too early to get off from work even for a Friday. Saturday morning 10AM class is good for most people's schedule. This ain't your Lifetime kickboxing class. This is the real deal--gloves, wraps, boxing ring, punching bags, mats, and sparring pads. I checked out the Saturday morning kickboxing class with a friend who knows the owner. You really learn how to punch, kick, hit, and fight (though I'm sure after infinite instruction, they would still just tell me to run like hell). No experience required, they were great about stopping by to tailor my workout to my level since the rest of the class appears to be regulars. First class is complementary, though I can't imagine anyone leaving and not wanting to sign up for more. For the recreational fitness junkie, this is a fun workout, high calorie burn, my arms are already sore (and we just got done 2 hours ago), fun change of pace from the normal routine, and an empowering experience. For the more hard core boxing/martial arts fan, they offer serious classes (some by invite only--oddly, I'm still waiting for my engraved invitation) and training for professional hopefuls. Instructors are awesome with loads of experience. Class was fun but challenging. Pricing is reasonable--see the website for more details--with a range of price levels depending on how intensely you want to use the gym. They also offer classes for children. Stop in, punch the hell out of some stuff, get sweaty....and look for the girls in the pink boxing gloves so you can rip on my wussy round kick. read more

I've been going to the Cellar Gym now for a couple months and couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the instruction. I am working on getting back in shape and wanted to do so by learning something with some practical application and which would give me something to keep working on. ANYTHING other than a treadmill. Also, I was looking for a new martial arts classes for my boys as the local community center classes were disappointing. After researching a lot of gyms on-line, I was finding it hard to find somewhere that had the courses and schedule I was looking for, not to mention driving distance and cost. The Cellar wasn't coming up in my Internet searches, but I found out about it on Yelp and was excited to see that it was so close and had a the courses I was interested in at a great cost. After a visit, walk-through, and some demo classes, the whole family is signing up. WHY FIVE STARS: First, the youth karate instructor (lil' ninjas and youth karate) is *OUTSTANDING*. His classes are the perfect balance of teaching technique, respect, and fun. My kids love their class. Parents can stay and watch--though you have a weight room right across the hallway, why not join yourself and get a workout at the same time as your kids? After a one-on-one session with a trainer to determine what I wanted to focus on, I decided to sign up for the boxing class. I wasn't sure I would like it, but I'm really enjoying the classes. Warning, you WILL get a hell of a workout. I'm so out of shape that its tough getting through the warm up and with no experience in boxing, it was intimidating the first couple classes. But everyone has a great attitude. Generally, there is a good mix of men and women and different experience and fitness levels. The pricing is great for families. With each additional member, the price goes down. After my membership and membership for two kids, my wife's is basically free. AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT / WHY IT MAY NOT BE A FIT FOR SOME PEOPLE Note, nothing below detracts from my five-star rating, but that rating is based on what I, personally, was looking for. But no gym can be all things to all people. Here are some things to keep in mind when considering joining The Cellar: There is only one thing I don't like about the Cellar and that is the limited hours on Saturday and the fact that it is closed on Sunday. I understand, financially, why this make sense for them, but I often have to travel for business, generally earlier in the week, which makes it hard for me to take full advantage of my membership. I might switch from boxing to kickboxing, since boxing doesn't have a Saturday class, but kickboxing does. I would be nice if there were Sunday courses or if I could at least use the Gym on Sunday. Other reviewers have stated that the workout equipment selection is limited. If you are more advanced in terms of body building, maybe. But they have everything I need and unlike gyms I've used in the past, I've never had issues having to wait for equipment. You need to understand that the classes are pretty intense. Its okay if you can't keep up or need some extra help at first, but these are not "taibo" or aerobics classes. That may be intimidating for some, but it is exactly what I was looking for. If you are new to martial arts and out of shape, you'll feel pretty pathetic, but if you can use that as something to motivate yourself, instead of become intimidated, you'll find some real cool people are there to help. One important thing to point out, you are not actually punching each other in the general boxing and kickboxing classes. You are working with partners switching between hitting or holding the pads. If you become good enough there are other opportunities to practice in the ring and actually compete. I don't have any experience with, and cannot comment on, the higher level training and fight teams, thought they do have pros training there. Having been a competitive athlete my whole life, I felt bored with routine cardio workouts and circuit training at my usual gym. I had wanted to try kickboxing or some type of self-defense training for years, but needed something that would push me and challenge me more than just the "punch-the-air" cardio kick-boxing classes offered by big-chain fitness centers. That's when I found to The Cellar. I came to my (free) first class, a Muay Thai class, about two years ago and was so impressed with the facility and professionalism of the instructors and staff, that I have been a member ever since! The Cellar Gym was everything I was looking for, and more. There are other great "fight" gyms out there, but no other has made me feel like I am a part of "the team" like The Cellar has. I can't really give much of a review because I only went for the free trial class. However, it wasn't really what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be more like a fitness class with some kick boxing. Instead it was 100% kick boxing (and I have no idea how to kick box). I have never done kick boxing or anything so it was kind of intimidating when I showed up and they said, "Here are some gloves, go down that hallway." Luckily there was a guy who immediately asked if I wanted to be his partner and he explained what was going on and coached me through my 45 minutes of awkward kicks and punches. Had he not been there, I probably would have stood there and watched because I wasn't even sure who the instructor was. I did find out that Chris (the main instructor) was gone for the day and some other guy was filling in, so maybe other's experiences would be different. Like I said, this isn't a in-depth review, more so of what I experienced on my free trial. I did learn some kick boxing techniques and I got to punch and kick stuff, but it really wasn't what I was looking for. The facility was nice and clean and if I ever wanted to get into MMA or any other type of fighting, this is where I would go. For now, I just want a good workout and a decent selection of weights. read more

I had been looking rather passively for the past few years for that special sport. I have tried my hand (and/or foot) at all sorts of sports, but nothing ever stuck. The one sport I had never really given serious thought to was kickboxing. However, after noticing how large my spare tire had gotten, I finally said to hell with it and just showed up to one of the Cellar's classes about four months ago and I have been going ever since. To start off, I will give my general reasoning for why to do kickboxing. If you already know you want to do it, just skip this paragraph. If you are interested, what caught my attention was the intensity of the workout. I have heard some estimates that an hour of kickboxing practice can burn in the area of 1000 calories, which I believe, since I have lost a significant amount of weight since starting. What really keeps you coming though is the very engaging nature of the sport itself. Nothing keeps your attention and interest like learning how to not get your butt kicked. Regarding the Cellar in particular, what makes it great in my experience is the instructors and the students. All of the instructors I have had classes with have significant experience in varying martial arts going back years (winning belts and such) and that makes a difference. It gives you the confidence that you are being taught how to kick and punch correctly, which is very important as doing so incorrectly can easily lead to injury. What's generally more overlooked though, is the great balance between rigorous training and the generally laid back atmosphere. To be more specific, I was expecting to find a rather large quotient of douchebags, but to my pleasant surprise, I have yet to meet one. So, if you are just starting or looking to try out a new gym, they offer one class for free to get your feet wet. They have some loaner gloves there, so all you need to do is bring some comfortable workout clothes and be prepared to pair yourself with a stranger to practice with. The instructors take extra time with beginners and I found everyone I trained with to be very helpful when starting. So, stop procrastinating and try it. read more

For a little perspective on my review, I should note that I am completing my second week as of writing this. I've never done any martial arts in my life before now, yet for the most part have avoided total fat-assery. That said, here goes: The Good: As the other reviews have alluded to, these are not your p90x style kickboxing classes. Chris Cichon, world kickboxing champion of something or another (it seems legit, but who knows, it might be the Left-Handed Ginger Kickboxing Federation or something), has led all but one class while I've been going. He's super laid back, patient, and gives individual attention if you're a newcomer. It really is an intro to actual get-in-the-ring kickboxing rather than trendy cardio. Make no mistake, though, he'll squeeze every last bit of energy out of you. I've never once felt like I've been in over my head or looked down upon by the students who seem like they've been going for years. The more advanced training partners I've had have been quite helpful, as well. The Bad: The weight 'room' is pretty bare-bones. The dumbbells only go up to 55 lbs with a lonely set of 75's to fill out the upper range. They have a single movable bench that I've had to bring under the squat rack in order to bench press. There's no leg extension/curl machines, cable cross-over, nor really anywhere I'd feel comfortable dead lifting (thin carpet on top of cement). I initially wanted to drop my Anytime Fitness membership in lieu of The Cellar, but I might end up paying for both and do all my resistance training there. Summary: It's really a cool little community Chris and his wife, Jen (who's also very cool), have built there and to me, it's worth every penny they ask. You won't find a better workout short of paying a personal trainer $60+/hr. On top of that, the first class is free so you lose nothing by stopping in and checking out a class. Moreover, it's a local private business run by a pretty cool husband and wife duo who're the core of the little community they've built. What's not to like? read more

I've been going to the cellar now for almost 3 years. I love the facility very clean and well put together. They have weights and cardio machines for every aspect of a workout. If your a beginner just looking to get a sweat or learn a couple moves the cardio kickboxing classes are stellar. If you are looking to maybe start competing or are competing in combative sports well this is the place for you. From the head coach Chris Cichon who has had over 40 fights and competed all around the world or the BJJ Coach Marcelo Nunes who is a black belt and currently 5-0 in his professional Mma career. Just awesomeness around the whole facility. Check them out your first class is free so there is no excuse not to. read more

This gym has a fantastic kids' karate program. The classes are engaging and energetic and the instructor is great at keeping the kids' attention as well as encouraging them while keeping the class under control. In addition to the physical aspects of training, this gym emphasizes the mental and social aspects as well. The instructor is very open to communicating with parents too. read more
