My truck is hardly used and I don't pull a trailer or abuse this truck. On a family vacation in July 2023 my truck broke down. Over $1000.00 to get it towed back to Edmonton just to have my mechanic tell me the transmission was shot. 21000kms!!!!!!!!! And the transmission was shot????????? I realize the warranty is for 2 years or 40000kms but 21000kms is ridiculous. The mechanics I talked to agreed that a transmission should not only last 21000kms even after the 2 year warranty expires. Needless to say , i was not impressed. I called Can west to see what they could do to help me out. Well, they didn't seem to interested because ''' it's past the two year warranty''. They said they would pay for labour but I still had to pay for parts. $2600.00 later....Can West also stated that the problem was the parts in the transmission[which they replaced in 2020]. I called another transmission company and they quoted me $2600.00-$2800.00. So I'm not really sure what I saved???? Tow truck ,mechanic, new transmission, waste of time. VERY DISAPPOINTED. Do not use these guys!…read more My 85 yr old widowed mother took her '91 Honda Civic to Cooper Bros. in Edmonton for an exhaust repair. I had the car inspected at Midas earlier and we determined it needed to have the rusted exhaust system replaced from the tailpipe to the catalytic converter (mid car). My mother insisted Cooper Bros. do the work because they had previously done some minor work for her. I gave my mother (who is extremely sharp) explicit instructions to tell them to replace the damaged exhaust system - not just the muffler and tailpipe. After looking at it, Cooper Bros said they would fix it. They did not - they only replaced the muffler and tailpipe leaving the rusted middle section of pipe untouched! The manager, Jeff, later admitted they weren't equipped to replace that section of pipe. They charged my 85 yr old mother $628.95 for the muffler and tailpipe. I brought the car to Action Muffler yesterday to find out about replacing that remaining rusted section and they told me they would have charged about $350 for the muffler and tailpipe! Cooper Bros. overcharged her about $280!! While my 85 yr old mother was waiting for the initial exhaust work at Cooper Bros, manager Jeff convinced her to replace her timing belt. He did this while knowing the car had low kms (130k), she rarely drove it (about 100km/year), and would not be driving much longer. Note that Cooper Bros. had inspected her timing belt less than a year earlier and told her she didn't need one. Unknown to me, my frail mother booked an appointment and was charged another $1076.67 for this unnecessary labour-intensive job. They also left an important head cover nut off which I had to source and replace! Cooper Bros. took advantage of an 85 yr old elderly widow by telling her they could do an exhaust job they knew they couldn't do and then convincing her to replace the expensive timing belt. In total, she paid $1705.62 for repairs to a car that wasn't even worth that much! My mother gets about $20k a year in pensions, lives in a senior's home, and couldn't afford this. Jeff and Cooper Bros. saw an opportunity to take advantage of her and they did. They are dishonest and shameful!

So at least I expected the decent service that I would hope for from anyone. What actually happened was this: I stopped by on a Tuesday to see about an estimate. I waited patiently with my baby for ten minutes while they finished up a phone call. I began telling the manager about my trouble and he took another call, then left me waiting with the baby for another 15 or so, with seemingly no concern and no apology, until he finally got off the phone and addressed us again. He said he wouldn't have time until Thursday, so I said I'd bring it in first thing. On Thursday morning I dropped it off an hour before they opened (I thought I'd have to come back but they were in, so I gave them the key at 7 instead of 8 a.m.). The manager took my number and said he'd call when they had an estimate. Instead they called my aunt (who is, incidentally, a terrible communicator) so I didn't learn that there even WAS an estimate until two days later (now the weekend). My aunt informed us that it would be $2000 and she verbally told them to go ahead with the repair. In my past experience for ANY work this expensive, the owner should be signing off on a detailed written estimate before any work goes ahead. As this is our second vehicle, I tried to be patient when I didn't hear about the repair. On the following Tuesday (yes, we were without the vehicle for 6 days!) near the end of the day when I hadn't heard anything, I finally phoned them myself, and once again, he had phoned my aunt to tell her that it was ready, and of course she hadn't told me. This is why I left MY phone number (you know, the owner of the vehicle!). The end price was $2600, quite far off from the original quote to my mind. The transmission itself was supposedly rebuilt, and it now seems... fine? Maybe? I am not a dab hand with mechanics, hence paying someone else to fix it. It's an old truck so I don't know that anything is supposed to run perfectly anymore. After I got it back, the front heat and defrost were no longer working (back heat is fine). I have no way to know if this is coincidental or if maybe something got bumped while they were in there. Bottom line: they didn't communicate directly, leaving the OWNER of the vehicle out of the loop, and they did not provide a written estimate. On top of that, they increased the price by more than 25% before it was done. All of that I can attribute to the fact that they may have been confused and thought that my aunt was taking care of it more than she was. But getting it back 6 days later (actually, 8 by the end, since we did not have that money just lying around and needed more time to get it together) was completely out of line. In addition, I was largely ignored even in our in-person interactions. All that for a truck that now works... fine? In the future, I'll give them a miss.
