I went in with some black opal stones that a Los Angeles jeweler had proposed making the settings…read morefor but would not mount the opals because they are delicate. I was skeptical of the process of one jeweler making settings for stones that it did not have physically in its protection. I asked the jeweler at Santa Fe Goldworks if he could do it and he told me yes. He made copies of the CAD designs of the proposed settings and photos of opal pendant sales that would be used. He said he would provide $$ estimates for the mountings that afternoon. Based upon that representation, I told the Los Angeles jeweler to go ahead. Two days later I received an email from an assistant saying that the owner decided that they would not do it. That has put me in a terrible financial bind. DON'T TRUST THIS JEWELER.

I was directed to Ricardo, who repaired it while I waited. I was thrilled that it could be done so quickly as I had driven from Taos. And their jewelry is GORGEOUS! Maybe next time...

Andrew Baron, Alpine Clock repair, a horologist working on both clocks and pocket watches, is truly…read morea master. Andrew worked on three of our antique items: a tall case German Mauthe clock about 100 years old, a tall case wooden works American made clock about 200 years old, and an Edison phonograph 115 years old. Andrew fully explained all of the repairs for each item. The German clock required a full restoration, and the S. Hoadley wooden works clock needed quite a few adjustments to the mechanism and pendulum. He was able to get the 115 year old Edison phonograph working! The clocks are now running and keeping perfect time as well chiming as they were intended to do. What other craftsperson has this varied master expertise, amazing! We visited this establishment in March 2024 and ended up purchasing a metal sculpture. The…read moresculpture was not without issues. The following is a letter I recently sent to Juan (one of the owners). I have yet to receive a response. Hello Juan, During our stay in Santa Fe, we visited your shop in March of this year and after viewing a video of how the metal sculptures were made, we ended up purchasing a hanging metal sun sculpture. With the additional cost of shipping, we paid close to $300 for it. Upon receiving it, we noted spots where the surface had been chipped and was missing glaze and coloring. Apparently this was how it was sold as we did not view it close up, but rather, hanging at a distance on the wall. We contacted you and appreciated your prompt handling of the issue in sending us another sculpture (though not quite as appealing as the initial one chosen). What you neglected to mention is that these metal sculptures are not suitable for outdoor hanging in coastal areas ie. damp and salty air climates. We had put the first one up (w/o the rays attached) outside our front door. As you can see in the photos, the beautiful colors on the piece had pretty much faded after barely 2 months exposed to the local weather elements. We had refrained from putting up the replacement sculpture as we weren't sure where I wanted to place it on the outside of the home. But now we have the new one with no safe, outdoor spot to hang it, and no space indoors. I imagine we'll figure something out. So the point of this letter is to inform you about what has unfolded with your product and to encourage you to: 1. Offer to take the sculpture off the wall so the prospective buyer can view it up close and spot any damage or flaws that might preclude them from purchasing it. 2. Make your prospective customers aware of the very possible effect that damp or salt air can have on your sculptures. While some buyers might have an idea about this, many do not. If you bother to take these steps you can save yourself some grief and your customers some disappointment with their purchase(s). A word to the wise ...
