After completing those initial sessions, I realized they mainly consisted of using the gym machines to train core muscles. Unfortunately, the training package automatically renewed without clear notice and charged my credit card for another 4 sessions. Although I liked working with the trainer, I soon suffered a serious ankle sprain. I was bedridden for nearly a month and unable to drive for another month. When I finally recovered enough to return, I discovered my membership had been deactivated. I was not allowed to use my remaining training sessions. It has now been over a month, and they still have not reactivated my account despite multiple attempts. In total, I paid more than $600, yet I was unable to use the services I paid for because of my injury and their deactivation policy. To make matters worse, I was charged an additional $64 on the very day I got injured and called to cancel my session in advance. The lack of flexibility, compassion, and professionalism is deeply disappointing. Their policies feel greedy and punitive rather than customer-focused. I strongly recommend others think twice before signing up with this facility and its management.

I will always be grateful for the NCFIT Mountain View gym. It was a place that saved my fitness…read moreduring a difficult period of transition in my life and I'm sad to be leaving it due to a job change that takes me out of the area. The coaches are diverse and each has a unique, positive personality that they contribute to members, while also having strong relationships among themselves. They show they care through their enthusiasm, happiness to see you and watchful eye during complex movements. While the class sizes can get big, they often have 2 coaches on the floor and somehow manage to execute the classes smoothly while paying attention to individual movement quality. The coaches themselves compete in CrossFit, are insanely fit, practice mindfulness and nutrition practices, and themselves do the programmed workouts. They walk the talk and this is really important for members to see in their coaches. They are funny, knowledgeable, approachable, kind, and actively promote community between the members. The member mix is a good sampling of general people of all levels working out and some athletes who are really impressive - just enough to be inspiring but not intimidating to someone new to CrossFit. The programming is excellent. It is comprehensive, managing to cover classic CrossFit (benchmark and named workouts), strength, Olympic Weightlifting, aerobic capacity, interval weight training, gymnastics skillwork, recovery/blood flow, functional body building, and some classic body building. One can see that there is a long term design built around benchmark tests that makes logical sense and helps an individual work on progress in an area, rather than just going to do some random workout that crushes you for no reason. For example, a variety of clean and jerk based workouts over the span of weeks, leading up to retesting "Grace" or a 1 rep max clean and jerk. Or a 1 mile test followed by weeks of programming in which running is a component of an interval weight training piece. Frequent gymnastics-oriented EMOMS with muscle up or handstand push up progressions and a variety of scaled options to break down the skill and practice the components with guidance. Programming around the Open seemed tailored to challenge your engine or maintain your fitness, depending on how you wanted to go about the Open, with active recovery workouts programmed for Thursday and the Open workout programmed as the Friday workout. The programming for the weekend is generally a tough, volume-heavy partner workout, hero WOD or something you could take at an easier pace, particularly if it follows a more intense, heavy week of training. The programming is thoughtful and intelligent, and I'm considering buying it to do on my own at my next gym. Also, the warm-ups are a combination of movements tailored to each workout, and are therefore different for every class. This reflects the thoughtful intention behind preparing the body with movement specific warm-ups. This level of attention to detail and intent is really impressive. The weightlifting coaching is as good as you can get in a group class setting. I have received many helpful observations, cues, and suggestions that have helped me understand how I was moving my body, or given me greater awareness around the mechanics of the snatch / clean and jerk / squat / deadlift. Lastly, the front desk staff are warm and friendly, taking care of that all important first moment a member walks in the door, and that last moment when you walk out and they say goodbye. The gym is clean, the equipment is organized, and people seem genuinely happy to be here. Basically NCFIT far exceeds what a standard CrossFit gym does. It provides a level of member experience with great coaches, community and thoughtful programming that well exceed the investment.

I booked the complimentary 1:1 Pilates intro just thinking it would be a nice add on and even told a friend I wasn't planning to continue after. That completely changed after my session with Joan McCarthy. I'm so glad I happened to be paired with her for that complimentary session. She is truly exceptional. I ended up buying a large pack of sessions right after and now see her twice a week. We've even done a few double sessions which have been amazing. I'm already seeing real progress in my strength, flexibility, and overall toning, and the principles she teaches have helped me get so much more out of my Solidcore and other group workouts. What really stands out is her energy and approach. She has such a positive and motivating attitude, and she really pushes me to challenge myself, find my limits, and get the most out of every session. I've also learned so much more about fitness and overall health from working with her. She combines deep Pilates expertise with a dance background, and her hands on adjustments are amazing. She also sends an in depth breakdown after each session of what we worked on and is very responsive, which makes everything feel thoughtful and personalized. I'll be honest I waited to write this because I wanted to lock in my recurring time slots first, which probably says everything. I'm fully obsessed. Thank you Joan!

I had an extremely disappointing and uncomfortable experience with the front desk and management at…read moreEquinox. I arrived expecting to work out and was informed that I had a past-due balance from a previous membership. I genuinely did not know this balance existed. I had recently spoken with a Membership Advisor about signing up again, and this was never brought to my attention. To be very clear: I never asked Equinox to waive the balance or said that I would not pay it. I explained that I was willing to take care of it and asked whether I could pay it by the 15th while we resolved the access issues with my account. Instead, I felt like I was being held at the front desk, by Karina and at the front pressured to resolve everything immediately before I could even work out. The front desk employee also could not clearly answer basic questions I had about my membership and account access. Then the manager became involved and suggested that I had a history of late payments or similar issues. I told him I did not believe that was accurate and asked him to show me the record he was referring to. He responded that it was "on the computer." So I asked him to show me. He couldn't provide it. If you're going to make claims about a member's payment history, particularly while discussing an outstanding balance, you should be prepared to show the member the information you're relying on. The professional way to handle this would have been simple: take me into a private office, explain the balance and account history, show me the documentation supporting what was being claimed, answer my questions, and discuss an agreed-upon payment date. If we agreed that I would resolve the balance by the 15th, allowing me to complete my workout that day would have been a reasonable and respectful resolution. Instead, this happened at the front desk and left me feeling embarrassed, singled out, and treated as though I was trying to avoid paying something I had just learned existed. As a person of color, I also left seriously questioning whether I would have been spoken to and treated the same way if I were white. I cannot know another person's intent, but I can speak to how this interaction made me feel -- and no member should leave a premium fitness club wondering whether their race affected the level of dignity and respect they received. My complaint isn't about being asked to pay a legitimate balance. It's about how the situation was handled: the lack of transparency, unsupported statements about my payment history, the public nature of the interaction, and the way I was treated when I simply asked for answers and documentation. For a company positioning itself as a premium experience, Equinox should do significantly better.

I'm a pretty sedentary person and peeling me off the couch after a long day at work is nearly impossible. Fit Theory helps keep me more active than I would be, gets me in and out in 30 minutes, and keeps me on a consistent schedule. Regular gyms are often packed, no one cleans after themselves, and stuffy, but Fit Theory takes care of that my running multiple 1-on-1 sessions simultaneously so you aren't waiting on other people, prioritizes cleanliness, and has multiple air purifiers. It's a more pleasant atmosphere. What I like about Fit Theory is the convenient location on El Camino between the intersection of Mountain View, Los Altos, and Palo Alto. Since its in a central location, you can come in from work and then run errands right after. The property is large and has plenty of parking in the back. Signing up for classes is easy and flexible with an online app. Classes are individually tailored, but capped at 4-5 people per time slot. Everyone is really friendly and supportive. The 4-5 person cap per half hour time slot means that you save time by not having to wait for machines like you would at a gym for equipment that might not have been cleaned. You save a lot of time by getting access to the equipment you want and when you want it.

Their workouts remind me of…read moreCrossFit WODs, but it's not exactly like CrossFit because I think they slow things down to focus on good form, and the coach-to-athlete ratio is smaller. Each day of the week has a different focus--upper body, lower body, conditioning, Olympic lifting--and they rotate the workout cycle every 6 weeks. This allows for progressive overload, and just when I think I've mastered the form, the program changes and keeps things fresh. Due to my main sport, I have an irregular schedule, so I appreciate that they offer a variety of flexible membership plans. A major perk is being assigned a personal coach who checks in with you weekly for the first 12 weeks and then once a month thereafter on paper. In reality, I see my coach Carina more often than that from attending sessions where she is coaching, and when I go to open gym. Carina has been incredibly helpful in supporting my specific fitness goals for my sport--crewing in dinghy team racing and working bow in big boat sailing. She created a custom workout plan (which she updates every few weeks) that incorporates the exact movements I need, like pulling ropes at specific angles--something I haven't been able to find anywhere else. She also helps me address any random soreness from other activities with targeted stretches and mobility work. The gym also has an InBody machine that you can use anytime to track your progress. I've seen a measurable decrease in body fat and an increase in muscle mass, which is very validating. This review might make it sound like I'm really into working out, but my natural state is being a potato. What gives me the extra push to haul my butt to the gym is worrying that the dogs Koa, Koda, Kona, and Loki will forget what I smell like if I skip a week. (Those are the regulars I see, maybe there are more fur angels?!) They're all super sweet and provide much-needed dog therapy. And if you're not into dogs, don't worry--they're well-behaved and won't bother you. I think I need a conclusion paragraph. Basically, I have found that FunLife is a good investment in my physical and mental health (yay dogs!) because of the flexible membership plans, variety of sessions, coaching, and other nice-to-haves like open gym sessions and the InBody scanner. Highly recommend!
