I've been using Samba and his team for a series of repairs on my parent's house -- everything from…read morechanging faucets to leaking drain lines to clogs to new hose bibs, sump pumps, and an ice machine line. I even had him fix some code-compliance issues with previous work. While scheduling can be difficult (he prioritizes emergency calls, as he should), his work is top-notch and his team goes above and beyond, doing the things you didn't think of but needed, such as making sure drains are clear when changing faucet or putting in proper shutoffs where they should be -- no cutting corners. On multiple occasions, he and his team have stayed late until the job is done. They may not be the cheapest in town, but they are easily worth the money to know that the job will be done correctly the first time -- and I consider myself pretty picky when it comes to how I think things should be done. I've hired him multiple times this year, and will likely have him back in the future as needed.

We moved from NYC to Nanuet and renovated our bathroom at our new place. The sink in our primary…read morebathroom had a slight leak and was causing some warping to the vanity sink shelf. My partner and I looked for a plumber and landed on Roto Rooter considering it was a small job. We thought a large chain might offer a reasonable price to fix this minor problem. We were surprised by the large amount of their original quote but reasoned we need to stop the damage to our vanity. After the technician finished one hour of work, we see the final bill has an extra $300 price tag, bringing our total bill to almost $950!!! We could have a bought a new vanity for that cost. After speaking with a manager at the company, they tried to explain the additional cost. I mentioned on the phone, the additional $300 completely caught us off guard from the original quote and that it was pretty significant. The office offered us a small discount because we participated in their food drive which offered a $55 discount with a food donation. Yet this is a minor salve to the financial dent this has caused. I don't recommend their service because their prices are way beyond what seems logical. For the price they charged you can almost start from scratch and arrive at the same cost to make their repairs.

I'm not entirely sure this was the location because Roto-Rooter uses a central dispatcher, but the way this company does business seems to be a problem across the board. Their plumber came over to fix a kitchen sink that wasn't draining properly. He snaked the drain and charged me $700. When he was finished, he told me there was bad piping (with a cracked pipe, or so he said) in the basement and showed me a water spot. I had reservations about it but I know nothing about plumbing so I ignored my instincts. He told me it would be a $1500 job...$1800 after parts. He got there around 8 am and said it would take about 4 hours. He was there all day. Ok fine, these things happen. But around 6 pm, I kept asking him how much longer it would take, and he'd say 30 minutes or 1 hour longer every time I asked. It ultimately lasted until midnight. I had to cancel evening plans and set my alarm to make sure to wake up to let him out of the house. After all that, the sink was still not draining properly. He said that there was nothing else he could do about that and that it would be another substantial project to fix that. I argued with him saying that the whole purpose of the project was to fix the drainage problem and that the rest of it was pointless without that. He held to the line that "nothing could be done" until I said that I was beginning to suspect I was being scammed. At that, he came over and spent 20 minutes and found a big chunk of grime in the pipe. Not sure why that wasn't the first thing he found. Also, not sure why it took having to raise my voice to get the job done. Then, he finally finished the project and presented me a bill for $2,150. He said the parts cost more than he thought. I asked him why he didn't say that up front. He said "he wished he had." I expressed my considerable disappointment and told him I'd pay him $2,000, and we settled on that. So, my total cost for this was $2,700. Frankly, I feel like a sucker. Part of me wishes I had refused to pay altogether. Hopefully, if enough people call out this chop shop mega-plumber, more business will go back to mom-and-pops. That's where my business will be going for now on.
