Helps if you make use of the entrance behind Lowe's and Target. Lowe's, Target, Kroger, Barnes & Noble, UPS, Five Guys, Best Buy: all places I shop. Major downside is some criminal activity that occurred in the below-ground parking structure recently. Hopefully, Atlanta's finest (who maintain a presence) and contract security have that in hand now.

The Edgewood Retail District is a big shopping center located just south of Little Five Points in…read moreeclectic Edgewood. It's the only large-scale shopping center of its type in the neighborhood and unlike almost any other development in the surrounding area because it's so suburban-like. The development opened in 2005, the same year as Atlantic Station in Midtown, around the peak of the last construction boom. About a decade old now, this shopping center is still in good shape. It's relatively nice and clean. There are multiple buildings, all made of brick, and plenty of parking including an underground garage. On weekends, it gets slammed, especially around Target. During peak periods, traffic on Moreland entering and exiting the property can test one's patience. Alternate routes include taking Caroline St. or even Hardee St. at the far south end of the district. Major tenants here include the aforementioned Target, Barnes & Noble, Bed Bath & Beyond, Office Depot, Best Buy, Lowe's, Kroger, and Ross. Several local/regional restaurant chains include American Deli, Figo, Willy's, Five Guys, Ru San's, Shane's Rib Shack, and Uncle Maddio's Pizza Joint. Most of the retail and dining options feel run-of-the-mill and generic, though there are a few highlights. They include the beehive, which is a boutique store filled with local, handmade items (apparel, accessories, housewares, jewelry, etc.) and Morelli's Gourmet Ice Cream (2nd location). I prefer the Morelli's in Edgewood over the original Morelli's nearby in Ormewood Park because it has the same great ice cream except indoors with more seating and air conditioning. While sprawling, the shopping center is very walkable with wide, evenly paved sidewalks. It's within 10 to 15-minute walking distances of two MARTA rail stations: the Inman Park-Reynoldstown station and the Edgewood-Candler Park station. Edgewood Retail District is a very practical/functional shopping center. It'd be nice to see more variety and uniqueness when it comes to tenants (less chains), especially considering this development is intown. However overall, it is A-OK. My only gripe with this shopping center, and it's a major one, is the lack of safety. That's the main reason for my two-star rating. In the last year or two, there have been brazen, violent crimes committed in the parking lot and in the parking garage. The physical assaults and/or robberies have occurred both at night and in broad daylight. The property owners/management need to do a much better job with the security around here.

SHOPS INCLUDE: Women, Men & Children's clothing, lingerie, REAL leather boots and Western Wear, shoes, accessories, hair, nail & eyebrow salons, esthetics, jewelry, and electronics. There are candy stores, fragrances, a soccer sports store, mobile phone providers, a truly unique candle store and more. But the best part for me was the food court. You'll also find services such as alterations, insurance, printers, real estate, import/export, taxi, consulting, prom/wedding attire, florists and party favors. THE FOOD COURT FEATURES: Tacos and burritos, pizza, arepas, paninis, shawarmas, baked goods, seafood, Mexican ice cream, fried corn, Venezuelan hamburgers, tortas, gorditas, tamales, empanadas, cubanos, enchiladas, sopes, grilled steak, soups & stews, chicharrón, baleadas, smoothies and so much more! There is even a Dominican place called Mamajuana (hahahaha), but I have yet to catch them open. Must be my scent! There are traditional restrooms as well as individual/family restrooms (complete with a lounge) and a giant water fountain. The floors are a nicely stained concrete with a glossy finish. There is an OUTDOOR gated turf soccer field with its own Agua Buena League where adults or kids can compete with other teams in a fun and safe way. There is also an event hall and Kids Club where "little ones can enjoy different activities, learning different crafts, music and even cooking recipes." SERIOUSLY, WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE about Plaza Las Americas. *** FINAL THOUGHTS My one complaint is nearly everything is written in Spanish and not English friendly. I get I'm probably not the target audience, but I want to be supportive all the same. Many of the vendors are also English challenged, which makes asking a question or making a purchase a tad difficult. But if you can persist, the mall is very clean, safe and most of the vendors are super friendly and eager to please. I absolutely adore what they are building here... a community! This event was a fantastic way to support the community while enjoying an evening of shopping, tasting, and discovering local businesses. More than 30 Black-owned small businesses showcased their products and services, offering everything from unique gifts and handmade items to delicious treats and lifestyle products. I found a few goodies for family and friends and, of course, a couple for myself too! The Black Wine & Spirits Festival added to the fun with tastings and a lively atmosphere. It was great meeting vendors, learning their stories, and supporting small businesses that are making a difference in the community. The venue on the 15th floor of the Towers at Uptown Atlanta provided beautiful views and plenty of space to browse. Overall, this was a well-organized event filled with positive energy, great shopping, and community spirit. Looking forward to attending again next year!

I moved to Atlanta in 2015, and Toco Hills Shopping Center was one of the more ignored shopping…read morecenters in the area. First of all it was Toco Hills (Where is THAT?), and it was basically a lot of dead space, a huge, mostly pot-hole riddled parking lot, and not-so-well-known businesses. According to Edens Property, the management company that owns both Toco Hills Shopping Center and its adjacent neighboring property Toco Hills Promenade, Toco Hills Shopping Center encompasses both Salaryman and Toco Giant Package Store, all of the stores in the row from Iron Age and north to Sushi Matsuya, and all of the stores in the row of businesses from UPS Store to Frugal Kitchens, and the two empty stores past Frugal Kitchens. This is a very confusing set up, because it isn't visually obvious that there are three different shopping centers, but looks like only one. Anyway, Toco Hills Shopping Center had fallen into sad disrepair years ago, with mostly discount businesses taking up the retail spaces, if there were even existing businesses. At that time there were many empty stores. Thankfully, there have been positive transformations in the shopping center over the past six years, resulting in it becoming a popular destination for shopping, restaurants and services. The parking lot has been redone, and all of the retail areas received a much needed makeover. In short, the entire Toco Hills Shopping Center look so much better now, so much more welcoming, and is now a lot busier. In addition, the overall quality of the businesses appears to have motivated more people to shop, dine and receive services So far, the shops that I've gone to in Toco Hills Shopping Center are Iron Age Korean Steak House, Spiller Park Coffee and Sushi Matsuya, having OK to great experiences. I will definitely return to experience more businesses here when I'm back in the area.

Global Forum Shopping Center had the potential to be a 5 star shopping center, but right now, it's…read morelooking more like a 1 or 2 star shopping center. Blame the 2008-2012 global economic recession. I remember when I first visited Bakery Cafe Maum in 2008 and thought this plaza was going to be the next great thing on Buford Highway. It was big, new, and clean. It had fancy European architecture. Tall buildings, wide sidewalks, nice stuff. Fast-forward 4 years and the entire development looks like a ghost town. All of the shops are gutted and empty. All of the storefront signs have been uninstalled. You can see weathered outlines of where the signs used to be. Bakery Cafe Maum closed, the mobile dealer closed, the boutique closed, Mi Rak Korean Restaurant closed. The only things still open are Spring Hall (an event space), Karaoke Melody 2 (best karaoke in town), Subway, and a Mexican guy selling popsicles and ice cream out of his cart in the back (and I wonder if he's even technically allowed to be there). I drove through the parking lot on Wednesday and there is a big sign that hangs above one of the central storefronts on property. The sign simply reads: "FORECLOSURE HELP" Does this mean they're offering foreclosure assistance or are *they* the ones in foreclosure and are asking for help? I'm guessing the latter. While it's technically not a part of Global Forum, there is a townhome community next door that is partially developed. The townhomes are designed in the same style of architecture as the shopping center. It looks like this residential development has gone under too. The entire community looks deserted and grass and weeds are growing all over the place, including through cracks on the sidewalk. It looks like the houses were built and then never sold. You can also see sidestreets where plots of land were being prepared for new home builds, but construction was halted. This neighborhood is a perfect example of the housing crash. Global Forum actually reminds me of two similar shopping centers in Duluth: (1) on the southern end of Satellite Blvd. where I Luv Pho #2 is located and (2) on North Berkeley Lake Rd. where Well Bean Tofu is located. I hope these places don't suffer a similar fate. Well, I love Karaoke Melody 2, so I hope it survives and hopefully Global Forum will make a comeback. I'm rooting for them!
