Always bustling with activity, Pritchard Park is sort of the unofficial gathering place for locals and tourists alike visiting the cities downtown area. It is, quite simply, one of my favorite places to just sit and chill anywhere in the world. There are local artists selling their goods, people playing chess, street performers trying to make a buck from a wide variety of talents (some insane and others clever) and almost always a musician pouring out their soul for all to hear. During our visit there was a young lady who's music reminded me of Tracy Chapman. Why she doesn't have a recording contract is a mystery, but I can tell you not only was her voice divine and lyrics heartfelt, she also commanded a large crowd that DID NOT MOVE from their seats while listening to song after song. I could have stayed to listen to her all day and two weeks later still regret not buying one of her CD's. Other times this park hosts what is known as the Drum Circle, which is equivalent to New Orleans random Second Line dance parties that break out in various spots around the city. An amazingly good time where everyone young and old dance to the thunderous rhythm of the dozens of drums or join in on playing the drums themselves: Link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=lDZp68zjfTc SIDE NOTE: There IS a homeless element here, but as far as I can tell they are mostly harmless. My wife and I have a heart for the homeless and pray other who see them will not disregard them. Tragedy befalls us all and some just don't handle it as well as others. I sought one out after dinner to give him a few of the Korean wings I purposely didn't eat from our meal @ nearby Blue Flame Curry House. So good by the way! FINAL THOUGHTS Looking for the heart and soul of Asheville, come here!!! Taste and see what living feels like through life in its purest form... dancing, singing and laughing as one! Asheville to me feels like what humanity was always meant to be: All races all creed all nationalities enjoying life... TOGETHER. 2018/81

There's a park marshall here! May be because of all the tourists flaking around possibly because of the homeless population [not sure if they were homeless or that's just the look they were going for] but either way, there's some top security. Pass by Pritchard Park on purpose on a Friday night for the well known drum circle {these won't be the only musicians you'll see on a Friday night, but it's a good place to start your adventures}. Enjoy the parking when waiting for dinner reservations at any of the surrounding restaurants but make sure you don't have any open containers--there's a Park Marshall on duty, remember?! Try your hand at a game of chess on one of the built in, concrete chess boards, so people watch in the amphitheater style seating [or on one of the benches surrounding the park--as long as it's not being used as someone's bed]. Overall, tiny park, but definitely worth a stop JUST to see the Friday night drum circle.

A neat little triangle-shaped park in the center of the downtown area. Benches, steps, there is apparently a drum circle thing that goes on during warmer weather. Today was a bit cold, so I applaud the two guys playing chess and the sketch artist. Great spot to sit while waiting for your table at one of the many nearby restaurants.

Pritchard Park is a small park in Downtown Asheville. On Fridays, there is a Drum Circle where lots of people come to participate. It is a fun experience to see if you are in Asheville on a Friday night.

Every Friday night a little "thing" goes on in Pritchard Park...a drum/groove session. Now this started years ago and has grown to something I'd never thought I'd see.....hundreds of people filling this tiny little park in the center of town beating drums and dancing in a huge mass. Now I grew up in Asheville, so Pritchard Park was for many years mainly a city bus stop. But somewhere in this crazy transformation of this downtown (mind you most of the hippy stuff is self contained in the city) the drum/groove session started. The funny thing about it now is that as condos were built in and around that square the new neighbors have complained about the noise???? Hmmmmm......the more things change, the more they stay the same. The session itself starts around dark and goes into the evening. For the particular weekend I counted 50 people with some sort of drum or noise making instrument and at least twice as many people grooving to the beat. Old, young, conservatives, hippies....all walks of life watch this little display with amazement probably thinking to themselves how this gets organized.....and that is the great part...it isn't...just pure fun every Friday night. Check it out....

People watching at its FINEST. We love the drum circle on Friday nights. Looks like a great workout for the participants!! Great for the entire family. Bring ANYTHING to beat together to get IN on the FUN!!

More or less in the center of downtown; Pritchard Park is everything that you'd expect it to be. I stumbled upon the Friday night drum circle which - while not my particular cup of tea - seemed pretty cool. During the day you get an entire cross section of the town from families with small children to homeless burnt out hippies selling made up poems for a whatever you're willing to pay. A uniquely Asheville experience.

Cool triangular shaped park in downtown Asheville! Wired for sound! Seems like there's always someone there playing music. It's constructed like a mini Greek amphitheater with step like seating. Built in Chess Boards with John Deere tractor seats. Great place to catch some shade, tunes and take a break from eating and shopping!

This dude did not even breath.

There are other stretches of the French Broad that are more aesthetically pleasing, but around here, it's a brown snake that doesn't seem impressive. If you pass through the city without stopping here, you're not missing anything given the profligate majestic clear waterfalls in the mountains nearby. However, there is a decent pedestrian infrastructure built up around this bridge, and several restrooms, launch facilities for watercraft, and other useful features. For the more casual or local user, it's at least a waterfront that has been well developed for public use.

Quick hint- if you GPS the actual dog park, you will be taken down a side road and directed to climb down through some overgrowth. Take the normal park entrance and follow the paved path to the dog park entrance. This park is beautiful with huge shade giving maple trees and a wide, well paved path. The dog park was pretty empty on Thursday afternoon due to the rainy weather. However our other visitors who were very welcoming and had very friendly dogs. Stopped by again today, before road-tripping home, and it was just as fun. Lots more visitors and other dogs to play with or just chase. Our dog was even greeted by one of the Thursday people. Just a nice place to spend some time. The area is well kept and they have a good amount of supplies to keep it picked up.

It should be a crime that the government wants to privatize all national parks and it's a shame that we may not be able to enjoy this stunning area of the United States much longer. The open stretch was in higher elevations (hence not impacted by the hurricane) which meant we had some really spectacular views of the mountains and terrain. It really was wonderful. There are a ton of scenic overlooks and a few maintained spots where you can pull over and enjoy a picnic or use the facilities (they're barebones restrooms but they have them) but aside from that amenities are few and far between so be sure to pack some food, drinks, and make sure your tank is full of gas so you can enjoy the views and explore stress free! The only trouble was there wasn't a lot of information available on what we'd find on the parkway (meaning what stretch was closed, what was open, must see overlooks, hiking trails, etc) as the visitors centers were closed and the Smoky Mountain NP visitor center we stopped into didn't have any brochures or maps or anything. Luckily once we got onto the parkway we were able to find a scenic overview with some signage that had a map so we took a picture of that and was helpful. The good news is is that I believe right after our trip they reopened another large stretch of the Parkway northeast for Asheville (which I believe has has all the amazing waterfalls) so we'll have to come back another time to enjoy all those views!

Made it there on New Year's Day. Bright and early. Did get lost trying to follow GPS so map it as it reads on the website. Siri thinks she knows better and I ended up in the boonies without service. Backtracked and when I had cell service again, followed instructions and got there without a hitch. The staff, mainly in the Welcome Center was great. So friendly. Knowledgeable. Genuinely pleasant. Not only providing instructions on the exhibit but shared a few stories about the process. It was cold but the walk and sun, when it came out, helped me to not freeze. In fact, by the halfway point, I had removed my outer layer. I mentioned this because it wasn't all paved paths - eventually after you pass through the garden directly outside the Welcome Center - you wander onto the packed trail. Glad I got there early as by the time I left, the parking lot was filled up fast and cars were lining up at the entrance to the park. I didn't check out anything else at the Arboretum but judging from what I did see, it's a beautiful area and exhibit. If I happen to make a return visit, it'll definitely be when it's warmer weather.

Walnut Island River Park

This is my favorite Buncombe County River Park. Even though there are no restroom facilities here,…read morethe beauty and serenity of the location more than make up for it. In addition to the various natural dams and rocks in the River, someone has created a little kiddie pool to keep the little ones from floating downstream to Marshall. The river splits with part of it going down a channel to the right, forming walnut island. That little section of the river is just absolutely gorgeous, and the county maintains an easily traversed path the Full length of the island. It could be the perfect location for a small informal wedding, with the bride coming down the path from around the bend, a natural canopy complete with beautiful gurgling sounds of the river flowing over the rocks. The park is equipped with barbecue grills and picnic tables, although the tables look pretty uncomfortable. I suggest bringing your own canvas or folding chairs & blanket if you're going to be here for a while. There is plenty of gorgeous grass, and the park seems to be pretty well maintained. This morning, I saw two people fly fishing, in their waders, as well as a couple more people fishing from a small boat on the river. Really, an idyllic scene. No one else was in the park for the entire 30 minutes we were there, so if you want a little privacy and a gorgeous spot, Walnut Island River Park is the place to go. At least until it gets discovered by the masses.
