I had one of the worst salon experiences of my life…read more I contacted this stylist through Instagram after seeing his advertisements. Before making the appointment, I asked for the price, and I have screenshots showing that I was quoted $120, including a highlight touch-up, toner/gloss, haircut, and blow-dry. When I arrived at the salon, I was suddenly told the service would cost over $400. I was shocked because this was completely different from what I had been told in writing. I started to leave, but the stylist stopped me and eventually lowered the price to $300. Unfortunately, the pricing issue ended up being the smallest problem. During the bleaching process, after about 20 minutes, my scalp and even my ears became extremely hot and painful. I immediately told the stylist that something was wrong. Instead of checking my hair, I was told the bleach needed to stay on for about an hour. I trusted his professional judgment. That trust cost me years of healthy hair growth. After washing my hair, he deliberately stood in front of the mirror while blow-drying so I couldn't clearly see the condition of my hair until he had finished. He never performed the haircut that had been included in the agreed service, quickly parted my hair differently from how I normally wear it, rushed me to pay through Venmo, and I left before realizing the full extent of the damage. Once I got home, I discovered that many of the highlighted sections throughout the sides, back, and underneath my hair had been chemically burned off and broken. My hair had previously reached my waist. Now, many highlighted sections have snapped off dramatically, leaving parts of my hair several inches shorter. The color is also uneven, with dark ends, greenish tones, and a result that looks nothing like what I requested. To make matters worse, the bleach also permanently damaged my clothing. This is far beyond simply being unhappy with a color. My hair suffered severe chemical damage, and I lost years of growth in a single appointment. I have photographs, screenshots of our conversations, proof of the quoted price, proof of payment, and documentation of the damage. I cannot recommend this salon or stylist to anyone.

After a cut from Juliet, I feel like my curls can finally spring up to their potential. Juliet started out with a dry cut and she was so amazing answering all of my questions (which I had a lot). She was super knowledgeable as to the type of products that my hair could handle, and even let me know that my current shampoo/conditioner was probably too heavy for me which is why my curls were a bit lackluster. After the dry cut we moved onto the wash and some final snipping finishes. I'll probably never be able to recreate the final look that she achieved after diffusing but I'll make it my personal mission to get as close to it as possible. Long story short, if you want someone who's a solid conversationalist, gives great curly advice, and listens to the type of haircut you want I recommend Juliet!

I have been having been getting Deva Curl shapings since 2007 and I think I have found my new go to - as soon as I walked into Velvet Waves, I felt like I was walking into an aunt's house - the location is conveniently located on Main St in Ellicott City and there is ample street parking and the free lots are just a few blocks away. Once I got into the shop, Carmen greeted me as if she and I had been friends for years - what a warm welcome! And not only that but once I sat down, she asked me to tell her about my hair and what I wanted to do - as a Deva Curl consultant I really rely on their expertise and experience with curly hair but it is always great when they really listen to your concerns and wishes so thank you Carmen!!! As always, the entire process takes about 2 hours since my hair is pretty long but let me tell you you will get THE BEST head massage when she washes your hair - I did not want to get up from the chair that is for sure - and she provides you with feet pillows so you can stretch out a little more - loved that! I found the salon through StyleSeat and then happened to know someone who gets her hair done here…read moreby Ora. I went on a Saturday for a color and silk press on my natural, thick hair. My experience was less than pleasing. I am not in the cosmetology business and maybe ignorant but what is it about salons booking a ton of heads when only two people are working? (One full stylist and one washer/blow dryer that day). My appointment was at 11. I wasn't in a seat until noon. I didn't leave until 5. I know that I had no idea what color I wanted. And even though Ora did try to help, I felt very much like an inconvenience to her. I was a new customer, who explained that I had only had permanent color done once. And she still seemed a little peeved at me not knowing what I wanted. She's the expert. Shouldn't she be able to help? And happily? When I complained that my head was tingling (reminiscent of the prelude to burning when I got my hair relaxed years and years ago) she made it seem like that was normal and that I needed to try to stay under longer to get the best color/effect. So I did. It took forever while she tended to the many other customers. But it very much felt like the dryer was her way of putting me and my services on the bench for a bit so she could do others. I will say that without a doubt my hair looked great once completely done. The color was amazing, the press was great. I didn't love the style but I figured I would just mess with it when I got home. I asked about waves like hers but she said it would be more money. To. Do. Some. Waves. With the same flatiron. So I just let it go. I paid 200 or so dollars which I know might not be a lot but for someone who never goes to salons and has been tending to her own natural/no-heat hair for years, it felt like so much for poor service. That was fine. It was what happened after that is the reason I am writing this review. I waited a few months to decide if I wanted to write this. But after multiple washes, pure aloe vera, masks, and deep conditioning treatments, I know my hair is ruined. More than five years of growing out and not putting heat on my hair -- all in the garbage. My curls are ruined. All I have to do is brush my hair and my natural, afro hair stays straight. Never, not since I used to relax my hair and started transitioning and saw my real texture, has my hair looked like this. I have cried. I have spent lots of money. And now to find some peace, I am writing this review. I genuinely DO NOT remember either Ora or her niece putting any type of heat protectant on my hair. I think at one point I even asked because I was worried. I warned her a billion times that my hair was NO HEAT NATURAL as of five years. No heat (save once). Or permanent die. Or relaxer. No precautions taken by Ora. And I know it's not just my hair because my own sister had tried to straighten my hair just once over that period of time and my curls came right back. The only thing I liked about myself -- thick hair on my head that I've learned to grow and protect -- is now gone. And I spent 200 dollars to ruin it. I will never be going back here. And unless you are not having service done on your real, natural hair (wig and weave), I would caution other newbie hair salon goers from going here too. Aside from the rudeness, tardiness, pricey-ness, etc, the most important thing is that my hair is ruined.

However, the last time I went, I had to see someone else because, at the time of this writing, Linnea doesn't work on Saturday. I saw a non-senior stylist. I asked for 9 inches of hair to be taken off. What I got was 11 to 12 inches. I am very not happy about this. When you go from having long hair to significantly shorter hair, you have to mentally prepare for that. I feel like I went from long hair to short hair instead of long to medium. My hair is too short now and I am quite angry. I can't wear it down, even at home, because I'm reminded of how short it is. I will have to keep it in a ponytail 24/7 until it grows long enough to recoup the 2-3 additional inches that were taken off, which is about 6 to 8 months. I feel like this stylist still has a lot to learn. She took my wet hair down to the length I wanted with dry hair pulled back in a mid ponytail. I almost feel like she wanted my hair to be a certain length and disregarded what I asked for. Additionally, I wanted the ends to be even all the way around. I had to tell her what that meant: 360 all the way around, not even with all of the hair pushed back.
