We've been loyal customers for over 12 years and have always appreciated the charm and warmth your store offers. Unfortunately, this visit was quite the opposite. My husband--just a week out from emergency surgery--was on his first short outing. We were both wearing masks for medical reasons. While that shouldn't matter, the staff member behind the register treated us with clear hostility from the moment we walked in. I greeted her politely, but she responded with an eye roll and a visibly unwelcoming attitude after looking at my mask first. That is ableism. Before my husband even entered the store, she abruptly and rudely asked, "Um, is that a service dog?" I answered honestly that our dog was not. Rather than calmly explaining store policy, she became increasingly short and vague. When I asked for clarification--since we've previously visited with our dog after receiving permission--she abruptly mentioned the health department had "just been in," and seemed flustered when it became clear we were unaware of any new policy. The tone throughout was dismissive, confrontational, and deeply unprofessional. Others in the store appeared just as surprised. It wasn't just about the dog; it felt discriminatory and ableist. We were simply trying to enjoy a brief outing and pick up a gift, but left feeling disrespected and unwelcome. This experience does not reflect the Shepherdstown community or the reputation your store has built over the years. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I watched as he was stalked around the store and stared down by both employees. My boyfriend and I both look white meanwhile my brother is a traditional looking Hispanic teenage boy. He was the only person of color in that store and he was followed as if he were up to no good. This was our first time in the shop and it will definitely be our last.

I also screwed up the address and found out after they drove all the way to Annapolis to drop it off that she moved and I still had the old address (I suck at details sometimes - unlike Frederick Basket Company). They were kind enough to drop it off to me in Silver Spring instead so I could give it to her when I saw her again. So much for the surprise, but the whole thing was too perfect. The staff is friendly and helpful without being overbearing. They give you your space while you shop and are always happy to answer questions. The last time I went in the fall they had free hot tea waiting for you just inside the door. I always end up finding something to take home, and can circle the store 3 or 4 times and still find something that I had previously overlooked. I've popped in and out of this store for years, and it never disappoints. It's Berkeley Springs, so you are dealing with older buildings that are often large converted Victorian homes. They creak, they lean and they make for small stores packed floor to ceiling with goods. If that's not your thing; do yourself a favor and stop looking at things to do in Berkeley Springs. This is a store full of Himalayan wares. You know how the pizza place smells like pizza, the indo - spice mart smells like curry, the Mexican joint smells like Mexican food, and the head shop smells like incense? Well this store has its own aroma that your schnoz isn't used to suckin' down its breathin' hole. So if you're THAT person; you know the one who gags walking by a Yankee Candle and performs covert ninja operations to pass thru the perfume section of a department store undetected; then this is not the store for you. It's not overwhelming, and it's certainly not bad, it's simply different, and not everyone likes different. Parking is limited since this is on a side street, but hey this is in a walkin' town anyway. It's such a fun little store to explore with a pretty cool staff. If you dig the other specialty shops in Berkeley Springs, you'll definitely dig this place.
