Although there were a few women traveling as companions, for the most part, we started as a group of 16 strangers, and ended our week together as fast friends. It was wonderful to go on a trip that was truly a vacation. Anna's attention to detail, and our wonderful guide, Melina, implementing and impacting the vision, made for a completely relaxing, fun filled experience. The food experiences were a mix of hands-on and demonstration and the food was delicious. The diverse itinerary invited us to explore alleys, a vineyard, churches, vast olive groves, pastures, mountains, archaic villages, workshops, and, of course, kitchens! Our accommodations were spectacular; on any given day, at any moment, around any corner, my breath was taken away at the beauty of the Masseria, which was only surpassed by the kindness of the employees there. Melina was a treasure and it was our group's collective pleasure to get to know her. She kept everyone on task (not a small task with 16 women) and made everything even more fun. She is a kind wealth of knowledge on so many topics and clearly knows the area and all things foodie! Anna's instructions related to the trip planning were always clear and exacting, which resulted in seamless execution. As participants, our connection to each other hasn't stopped as the group chat continues.... I highly recommend Anna and her team for any trip that you really want to be a vacation!

We experienced the best that Venice, Padua, Florence, Siena and Rome had to offer! The best hotels in great locations, restaurants, transportation, site expertise and individual treatment when needed along with making new friends resulted in this tour being even better than we had hoped for. I would be remiss to not point out that our exceptional tour guide, Marco, was one of the highlights of the trip. We certainly would choose Perillo in the future for tours to other destinations but first we need to go back to Italy with them again!

For instance, one hotel gave us a room that looked like it was a utility room, a zig zag shaped room in a far corner of the building or an adjoining building converted into a hotel room, took us 15 minutes to find & reach it! Also had 3 large air intake vents over the bed. Then Perillo dropped the ball when I called their number, they should have gotten us out of that room at any cost immediately, but we had to wait for the next day or we had to pay $100 extra! Many had no grab bars or safety features in the bathrooms & showers & no anti slip maps or appliques, this should be a must for a tour company that caters to Seniors! Sink wouldn't drain, I had to adjust the pop up so I wouldn't have to wait for someone to come up & fix it late at night! Other things like no way to make tea or loose mirrors! No handrails for staircases & got slammed by faulty elevator doors many times! Hotel porters dealing with undesirable looking people right outside in front of the hotel, may have been innocent but not a good look or good feeling, & in that same hotel a fellow Perillo traveler's ring went missing from her room! Maybe that's why Perillo is now using different Hotels? Recommended places to eat were not that great, found small local places that were better on our own. Felt rushed at times, hard to even take pictures at times. Offer optional tours but then because of minimums couldn't do some of them, not what I wanted to find out about after the fact! Also it seemed like the most important thing of the tour was about gratuities, constant reminders, made many of us feel uncomfortable & not because we're cheap, but because we're grown ups & know how to tip for good service! The local tour guides were excellent(especially Anna) & they commanded a nice tip on their own without any reminders! Also at times(many of us) felt like we were sorta on our own even when the tour director was present, like when crossing streets with traffic & telling us to use google maps! I would hate to think what would happen if someone on this tour didn't have a smartphone, which some Seniors don't, some just have basic cellphones! AIso, I did fill out a feedback page to Perillo & have yet to hear from them!

Basically, all we had to do was show up. Even at the airports we were met and guided past the long lines and helped through all of the immigration, customs, security and other steps. All communication leading up to our trip, mostly me asking questions, was always answered promptly and during the trip we were pampered and cared for every step of the way. Each of the luxury camps and lodges we stayed at were wonderful - comfortable with very friendly and helpful staff. Our private guide through Tanzania, Vianney, was terrific. He was a walking encyclopedia of the wildlife and flora of region. He also knew where to take us to see the magnificant animals - very often places where we were the only ones there. Each day's game drive was amazing. We saw all of the cats: Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs. Plus elephants, zebras, giraffes, a very rare black rhino and too many more to list. We also had a front-row seat to the great migration. When planning a major vacation, I like to make sure that all of the details - large and small - are taken care of so that there are no issues or unpleasant surprises while traveling. Because of that I probably peppered Dan Saperstein with more questions than the average traveler. Dan was always responsive and helpful. The result was that the only surprises we had were great ones. Like him noticing, from our passport information, that one of us had a birthday while at a safari camp. We were surprised that evening at dinner with the staff singing a traditional Swahili birthday song and the kitchen prepared a cake. Just wonderful. When we left for Africa, all of us felt that we were prepared for the trip: Had the right clothes, protective medications and gear, photo equipment, etc. for the trip. We knew what to expect. Even so, we were very pleasantly surprised by how wonderful it was. I can recommend Hippo Creek Safaris without hesitation. If our trip was an indicator, you will be very happy.

We found the pre-trip communication to be excellent but feel that the service while we were on the trip was out of this world! We had a few hiccups with a lodge in Tanzania. I was pretty upset with the situation and emailed Nina. I believe that there was a 6 hour time difference between where I was at and where she was at in New Jersey. Even then, I received a return email back from Nina almost immediately. She contacted the managers at the lodge as well as the senior managers at And Beyond; within the hour, we received an apology from the lodge management and a gift for our troubles. As you can imagine, anything can go wrong when you are half way around the world. I took a lot of comfort in knowing that there was someone who could help in my time of need. I liked Nina and Dan so much that I booked a trip for 2015 to Southern Africa for my elderly parents. Nina even personally wrote the owners of a camp in Botswana to see if they could fit my parents in especially since the camp was "sold out". If you have never been on safari before, I highly recommend that you use Nina and Dan. I know that in the age of online bookings, you might be able to organize the trip yourself. However, the camps vary widely in quality and access to these camps are typically by small plane charters. Having someone who knows the best camps and the best time to go will save you a lot of money and heart ache in the long run. Please note that this is a once in a lifetime experience for most of us since the "average" 10 day luxury safari will cost approximately $15k per person (excluding international air fare).
