She recently passed away at home at the age of 98. Starting about five years ago, Visiting Angels began providing caregivers for my mother for a few hours a day in the morning and in the evening. At the time she was mentally as sharp as ever and the caregivers only needed to make her breakfast or dinner and to do grocery shopping and some cleaning. By the last few months of her life, my mother needed someone with her 24 hours a day. Whether it was for only a few hours a day or for 24 hours a day, Visiting Angels was able to provide caregivers that were competent and caring. Some even became my mother's dear friends. Throughout the years that Visiting Angels was helping my mother, our account manager, Joan, scheduled the caregivers, filled in when a caregiver was unavailable, did the shopping - not only for groceries but from Amazon as well, cooked and kept the refrigerator and freezer stocked with really good meals and generally looked out for my mother's safety and best interests. We trusted her completely and I truly believe that her involvement added years to my mother's life. When my mother began to need help, my family was naturally concerned and apprehensive about hiring someone. Visiting Angels gave us far more than we could have expected and we are all grateful that we chose them.

He suffered a mild stroke which caused complete blindness in his left eye and later, partial blindness in his right. Before this issue, he was a very healthy 87 year-old. He cycled, when weather permitted, 25 miles/night up until the age of 77. He worked a full time job and still drove. Well, within a matter of seconds, the driving and working were gone and his life would be forever changed. He spent two weeks in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he was diagnosed with a rare disease, GCA (Giant Cell Arteritis), which caused the apparent mini stroke. After completing several tests over a two week period, it was decided to transfer him to a rehab facility. We chose Life Care Center of Acton because it was closer to home and my elderly mother would be able to visit him. The day he left MGH, before being transported, he had a minor incident where he nearly fell when trying to make his way to the bathroom, but he quickly grabbed on to the side of his hospital bed to keep himself standing upright, but by doing so he hurt his wrist. We visited him the day he entered the Acton facility. He was roomed with a gentleman who was leaving the following morning. We were advised the that morning the roommate tested positive for Covid-19 so they immediately moved my father into a room with a single bed. Before doing so, my father had asked an employee, which he assumed to be a nurse, to please look at his wrist as he felt he may have sprained it the day before at MGH. The person sourly said, "I'm not touching you." From this point forward, my fathers stay was nothing but an emotional rollercoaster ride. He was unable to get the PT that he was there for because he himself had contracted Covid-19. His days there were then limited to bed, and bed only. He complained to us daily, while on the phone or in person that he was not receiving the attention he needed, whether it be to get up and use the bathroom or simply walk around. Upon entering his 10th day in the facility he also mentioned he had not been bathed in 3 to 4 days. Frustrated, my sister contacted the head nurse of the facility by telephone and asked why our father had not been bathed, it was explained to her that he refused to be bathed. Because of this being an out right lie the decision was made to get him out of the facility ASAP. We were told they would not release him until he could produce a negative Covid-19 test. Two days later he was released back into our care and sent home. Upon his arrival home, we noticed he was severely dehydrated and weak, to the point he was not able to even standup to use the walker supplied by MGH. For the short period he was home it was nothing but a nightmare for all of us, especially him. At approximately the 30th hour of returning home he asked that we call 911 because he felt as though something was seriously wrong. He was correct! If we hadn't had him rushed to the UMass Medical Hospital in Leominster when we did, he may have easily passed away. We were told by the physicians that he had contracted sepsis and his kidneys had shut down. The attending ER physician asked if we would consider authorizing a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate Order) to which we said no. When we asked what may have caused this to happen we were advised that it may have resulted from dirty conditions at the rehab facility, Covid-19 or even the possibility of crossing medications he was now taking. It maybe ironic, but all three of those things may have occurred while staying at the Life Care Center of Acton. Furthermore, he was still testing positive for Covid-19. Our father is on the mend but not without complications from this experience. We understand that he is 87 years of age and life can quickly change but we also knew how his condition was when entering the facility versus the time of his dismissal. We would NOT recommend this facility to anyone at anytime!

Michelle, the…read morenurse in charge of my geographic area, interpreted my disclosure that in my living will and advance directive, I have a long standing provision for "death with dignity...dnr, dni etc." I am relatively young but I had to make decisions for my parents so now I have my wishes in writing. This stupid and/or religiously perverse nurse took this as a potential suicide so a few days later at 4 am (!), four Waltham police broke into my home on something called a Section 12 which allows police to break in if an attempted suicide is indicated. In no way, was I suicidal. I was immersed in three spine construction surgeries and had my Will etc. in order. I mentioned it to her in case something happened. I had to call my PCP at 4 am. who knew me for 28 years to talk her and the police down. All Waltham police officers (4) who showed up were hot to trot and juiced up to take me in. This was unconscionable. Separately, Michelle was told by me, I probably had a UTI. I said I had a staph UTI previously but the daft Michelle said I non detectable by another person body odor and to buy expensive Lume. I did so but immediately after pressing purchase on Amazon, I thought better, and just called an ambulance (not yet able to drive) and went to NWH where I was diagnosed, as I thought, with a UTI (urinary tract infection). I fired Michelle and this agency. Now, I am suing her, the organization, and the Waltham Police. Imagine if I wasn't with it enough to self-advocate. Does she get a commission for sending people to a mental health institution? Stupidly wrong diagnosis? I hope I get her fired.

Before discharge, I was scheduled to be seen weekly by a visiting nurse from Partners. The same (outstanding) nurse which scheduled times to meet with me on Tuesday's, unfortunately, just relocated. The following week, someone from Partners arrived unannounced at my home. When my wife called me to let me know, I called and spoke with the "Clinical Manager" and explained that the previous nurse came on Tuesday and we generally worked on a time to meet. With no explanation, Solomon told me that they had changed my day to Monday. Further, I was told they can tell me the day they are coming, but not a time. When asked if arranging a mutually convenient time to meet was asking too much since I work, I was then told I needed to be home bound to receive their services. I also called the "Clinical Director" who conveniently kicked the can back down to the first person I spoke with. I want to be understanding of their regulations: if, for insurance purposes, you have to be "home-bound" then why was I admitted for services before? And why was this only mentioned when I expressed concern that a patient is expected to wait compliantly until their visiting nurse arrives? I'm a stage 4 cancer patient who was discharged from Partners Healthcare at Home because, thank God, I'm still actively working (but need weekly picc line dressing changes and blood work).
