From past experience, I know the shelved chicken has a strange taste. After doing some research, I found out it comes from the absorbent pad under the meat. What he really meant by "just packed" was that they simply repack the same chicken over and over, slapping on a new "packed on" date sticker every day. Meanwhile, the meat sits there for who knows how long until it starts absorbing that pad's taste. This practice is misleading and unacceptable. I walked out without buying anything, even though I needed other items like flour and oil. I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

There were a bunch of boxed spice mixes too for like kabobs etc. And lots of nice drinks, I'm a sucker for medio litro cokes, you know, the big size, and they have them real cold here! The guys working here were super nice and helped me immediately find that za'atar after I gave up looking (because there are so many aisles of spices). Another freezer contains frozen foods and sweets. We went in looking for Ruhu fish, which they had. The price was $6 per pound and the total came out to be $30. We also bought chanachur - extremely spicy trail mix, which I cannot seem to find anywhere. The person working there was nice and picked out a good fish. He also cut and cleaned it for us to the right size. The only complaint is that the shop was not too clean.

Typically, my purchases at the store look different each time. In the past, I would buy Chandrika Soap or Mysore Sandal Soap and other items. I've also bought shampoo here before. This time, I bought Medimix Soap. Food-wise, I selected crispy beetroot chips with sea salt, a can of Thums Up soda, a can of Limca soda (lemon lime flavor, but doesn't taste like Sprite), and one samosa with chutney from the cooked food counter. I thought the woman working near the counter was totally disinterested in customer service, and I would say the whole experience at Subhlaxmi was off-putting and subpar. You can taste the difference--clean, high quality, and handled right. Prices are very reasonable for what you're getting. Honestly, it's a steal. Customer service? Excellent. They actually know what they're selling, and if you have questions, they take their time and help you understand--not just rush you out the door. The beef haleem was the best I've had in Houston. It beat Aga's beef haleem by far. Chicken tikka was exactly what the kids could eat. All food is scratch made so prepare for a little wait (Charga took 30 minutes) but the staff is great and kept bringing water, etc. Excited to find this gem so close to the house. I'm guessing my wife will be picking it up once a month after swimming practice at Houston Swim Club.
