Scozzafava’s Deli - Meatball sandwich & Italian combo sandwich

    Scozzafava’s Deli

The food experience that is Calgary continues. My brother loves this place so we decided to go here…read moresince it was close by. He says that this might be the best sandwich place in the city. We came to the store to order. and you know the service is top notch. The owner is very friendly and there is a warm ambiance about the place. On to the food, My brother order a chicken parm subs and say his sub was excellent as always. I ended up getting two subs. One was the meatball sub which was exceptional. The meatballs were well seasoned and were larger than my mom made when she was alive. the buns were toasted to perfection crunchy but not burnt. They had just enough sauce and cheese to compliment the sub but not overpower it . i also got a turkey pesto sub which had a lot of meat and cheese. This was very good and if i come back to Calgary i will definitely come back.

Now this is how you make a sandwich! There's such a thrill in finding incredible local eats. I'm…read morenot usually a big sandwich person, but a good foodie friend of mine said they heard the hype about Scozzafava's so I went along. No regrets. If you didn't know about this spot, you might easily pass by without a second glance. Scozzafava's serves up authentic, classic Italian sandwiches that just slap. They use a soft sesame seed bun, which probably is the most unique part of the sandwich. For their marinara sandwiches, I wish they used a thicker bun to better absorb all the sauce. The sesame bun didn't keep its integrity, sadly. The meatball marinara was glorious! Slightly spicy, super moist meatballs, slightly sweet marinara, and perfectly paired with bitterness of the rapini. Don't forget the cheese pull! We also grabbed the classic Italian deli, which was scrumptious and very filling. You can't go wrong with either option, in my opinion.

Out last week for supper with friends. After navigating several adjacent and interlocking traffic…read morecircles after several tries we got to our destination - the Wild Rose Brewery tap house at the old Currie Barracks -- Canadian Forces Base Calgary and had a very enjoyable meal. We'd all heard from friends that the site was an excellent place for beer and a meal and so were anxious to try it out. The tap house is in the refurbished garage on the base. One of the guys was familiar with it in its previous incarnation as a member of the Canadian forces. So we we had a chunk of the evening related to a his adventures there. There's also a "Buy Gear" booth and a beer store in case you want to buy a souvenir flat of their product. We got the the Barracks Brown Ale. The food was excellent - I had a really tasty and large bison burger with a green salad as a nod to healthy dining. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Based on the fact that the site offered a selection serving of the breweries wares delivered on a heavy wooden tray they also were physically imposing at least as far a forearm strength goes The tap house is also dog friendly. Like The Hague. The dogs were well behaved and quiet and the owners appreciated the attention given the critters by other patrons.

The brewery has a casual and inviting atmosphere and the workers were very nice. We tried an IPA and a raspberry ale and the IPA was better overall than the fruit beer, but we enjoyed them both overall. We had some French onion soup and chips and queso and both were very tasty overall. We didn't get to stay too long since we still had a lot of traveling to do, but we would definitely stop here again when we're in Calgary and we'd recommend it to anyone who's in the area.
