If you are looking for a special place for your kids or entire family to not only learn martial arts, but also to learn life skills and values that will extend to the rest of their lives, then look no further than Pride Martial arts! Our family has been at Pride Martial Arts (PMA) since early 2018 and it's about time I write a review. Our eldest son Nathan started at PMA at 5 years old in the Tigers program. He was shy and had separation anxiety. He had not done any other sports or extracurricular activities yet. We tried PMA for a week and were sold. Whether it was a large class one day vs a small class another day, we were so happy to see instructors that were teaching our son not only martial arts, but life skills, self-defense and core values like respect, self-discipline, honesty and so much more. And most importantly, he was having fun and enjoyed coming to class, including sparring. A year later our son joined the Leadership program, which allowed him to take more advanced classes like Leadership and Tricking, and an unlimited number of classes per week. He eventually started to compete in tournaments and continued to thrive and grow further. What was once a shy and quiet boy, blossomed into a skilled, confident and strong young man. Fast forward to today, our 12-year-old son is a 2nd degree Black Belt, ATA Martial Arts Champion (5x World Champion, 10x District Champion and 10x State Champion). All thanks to this amazing academy. Our youngest son also joined several years ago and is on his way to becoming a Black Belt next year. My wife and I joined PMA in 2022, competed and earned several State and District Champion titles, and became Black Belts recently as well. We could not be more proud and grateful for what PMA has done for our entire family! PMA has weathered many storms (e.g. pandemic, economic downturn, staffing changes, etc.), but it has persevered. Their commitment to our kids and the community is a rare gift that should not be overlooked, especially with so many other martial arts schools in it more for the money than their students. We are very pleased to be part of the Pride Martial Arts family! The growth we have seen in our kids since they started is very noticeable. From respect, commitment, leadership, and athleticism, this is an institution that delivers on their promise. We started during the pandemic as a new activity for the kids to try out and see if they liked it, as there were not a lot of things for children to do during lockdown. This is actually my second review for Pride Martial Arts. My girls and I started off with Pride 6 years ago and I wrote a review back then. I deleted it since I was just beginning my taekwondo journey I really didn't have much credence to what I was writing and no clue (especially with the kids) of how long we would last. Flash forward to present time. I just recently tested for my 3rd Degree Black Belt and the girls earned their 2nd Degree last winter. I think it is safe to say that I have a clue. The heart and soul of Pride Martial Arts is Master Instructor, Master Sean Berry (6th Degree)). A lifelong martial artist, Master Berry is phenomenal at what he does. My favorite math teacher once told me that to be a great teacher you need two things, PASSION and COMPASSION. Master Berry practically exudes both. His passion for the martial arts is infectious. Whether it is with our youngest students (ATA Tigers) or with adults like me, his exciting cheerful personality makes our lessons more than just a workout. When we stumbled upon Pride years ago because of a birthday party, it was his ability to engage my daughters and get them excited for something they had never seen before which made us sign them up. I've seen Master Berry hold the attention span of a class of thirty 5-7 year old kids for a class (30 minutes). Clearly he learned some sort of magic trick from Hogwarts to do that! For those that do get sidetracked, Master Berry does not lack for patience and easily gets them involved again. An impressive testimony to his skills as an instructor is how his assistant instructors, Mr. Casagrande and Mr. Pacuch, are developing into exemplary instructors themselves. I see them being successful school owners. Master Berry truly cares for his students and not only their development in the studio but also at home and at school. Despite the many demands on his time will make the effort to listen to his students as well as their parents whenever there is a concern. Is your child struggling in school? He wants to help. Is your child not showing a Black Belt attitude at home? He wants to help. Black Belt Attitude all the time, not just on the floor. The taekwondo instruction includes forms (which I truly find dynamic and challenging); sparring (gloves, shoes, vests, and head gear for protection); and weapons (depends on rank). For the Tigers, there is special focus on stranger danger and anti-bullying techniques. Each cycle also includes a special self-defense technique (ex: how to break out from a front choke hold or if you are already on the ground). In the Black Belt class we also go through knife/gun and advanced street fight defenses. For those students who want the extra challenge, there is the Leadership Program. Here students can take classes to become an instructor. Leadership students also have the benefit of taking additional training classes known as Hyper classes that involve more "tricking" where they combine gymnastics along with more advanced TKD moves as well as weapons. Think Hollywood-type martial arts moves and you have Hyper which requires special certification to teach. There is also a Hyper-fight class taught by Mr. Casagrande and is more combative and street fight-realistic than the traditional material. For you adults who also want more down and dirty, you can enroll in the Reality Self-Defense/Combat Fitness Classes. These are based on the Haganah Self-Defense fight system which Pride's instructors are also certified in. This is a very violent system even more so than MMA where you are training for one on one competition. Think how do you defend when it is 3 on 1 or if you're stuck between two cars, or you're in a club and lights and music are making it hard to focus. Worse case scenario situations. Pride Is part of Songahm Taekwondo ATA Worldwide. ATA was originally the American Taekwondo Association but with growth into Canada, South America, Europe, Korea, Australia, and India, it was renamed. ATA now stands for "Always Take Action." Founded by Eternal Grandmaster (he passed away in 2000) H.U. Lee, the style he developed is known as Songahm. He wanted a style that included more of the dynamic kicking styles that are part of the Korean martial arts heritage. Okay, so enough of the history lesson. Pride Martial Arts is co-owned by Master Berry and the equally enthusiastic and talented Ms. Ahn (4th Degree). Both are WORLD champions several times over within our association. Their devotion and vision has made this a top-10 school within the ATA. I cannot say enough amazing things about Pride and their phenomenal staff! Our daughter has struggled with self confidence and finding something that she truly loves doing until now. When we first walked into Pride she was so nervous and scared of trying something new. One of the first people we met was her new instructor Mr Lara and his presence and demeanor instantly calmed her and turned her nervousness into excitement. She went in for her assessment and I have never seen her so focused and driven in her entire life!! Pride Martial Arts - Tiger Challenge Completed! - Taekwondo Near Me - Chula Vista, California

My 3 year old and I went in for a trial class Wed. 14th, 5:30pm. It was my daughters first class and we were excited! From entering the building everyone was very friendly, professional and respectful. My daughter had a one on one 15 minute intro training with a coach, (I do not recall her name) and she did excellent! However, when class started and other kids entered the room, the male instructor seemed unprepared to handle my toddler. Being my daughters first class, she was excited and hyped up and had a hard time following instructions a couple minutes into class. The instructor took her by the hand AND KEPT HOLDING HER HAND FOR A SOLID 10 MIN. At first, I thought this was a normal part of their routine when a child wasn't listening, then I noticed he was excluding her from everything and just kept her in place next to him, so that she wouldn't interrupt his class. I saw the look of disappointment on my daughters face as he kept her held by the hand and went to every child in the room to practice kicks and punches, and completely ignored her. I then noticed that she was struggling to escape his grip, and as soon as he let go (he didn't want to) she ran to the other side of the room and stood scared, just staring at him. We left soon after, and my kiddo told me that the trainer was holding her arm very tightly and would not let go. She also said she did not want to return. This is not the experience I wanted to give my child on her first day and I was extremely disappointed. I have practiced martial arts for over 7 years and have never seen an instructor treat a child this way. This behavior not only decreases a child's self-esteem, but also makes them dislike the sport. If an instructor is not prepared to deal with children a certain age, don't put them in a position to do so! Maybe it would be best to not welcome 3 years old's, because it seemed that this academy is not equipped for that age group. read more

I have no issues with the martial arts program; it's great. The instructors are really nice and good with kids. HOWEVER, Have you ever tried to call this place? Well, good luck with getting someone to answer the phone. 100% of the my calls were answered by the answering machine. I've had to leave 2-3 voicemails for any time I called as well as send follow up emails for things as a reminder. Only once did I ever receive a return call and that was 2 days after the fact! The ladies working at the front are nice but it always seemed like they were understaffed. Anyone... I mean anyone can walk in and out of this establishment because it's always so crowded. The after school program was previously ran by Mrs. Maggie Greepo. She has great communication, knows how to talk to parents and is able to get through to children. However, the after school program is no longer ran by Mrs. Greepo and the current person watching the kids is NOTHING like Mrs.G. -That's too bad. There were too many times I picked up my child and everyone was watching Sponge Bob or Power Rangers...and No, it wasn't a Friday! Perhaps this was just something to fill in the time during the first week of school since there's no homework but what about the other weeks? This is not what I expected for paying $140 a week for after-school care. Don't bother asking for a military discount; they don't have any. SO... expect to pay A LOT for shirts, belts, equipment, tournaments, books, etc. With so many kids enrolled in the martial arts programs you'd think the costs/fees would be a little more reasonable. read more

My daughter initially tried soccer and swimming but lost interest after a couple of months. We passed by Pride Martial Arts after a swimming class and she expressed interest in learning Tae Kwon Do. The staff and instructors are professionals, friendly, and knowledgeable. Their facilities are awesome and very clean. They have 3 modern training rooms and a lounge area where parents can watch their kids (with Wi-Fi). That was two years ago. My daughter now enthusiastically attends class 3-4 times a week. We live in the Otay Ranch/Eastlake area and wanted a school close to home for our 6-year-old son. We looked at different martial arts styles and schools in the South Bay, and eventually decided to give Pride Martial Arts a try. Why? For starters, our son's journey into martial arts was going to be about HIM and he showed a real excitement with this particular school, that's what we wanted to see from him, so that was the deciding factor above the other schools. That excitement stemmed from the passion of the instructors, the familiar faces from his school, the sense of community, the facility itself, and the overall "fun" factor for him. As working parents the various class times offered worked well with our busy work schedules--allowing both of us to attend/watch our son train. The staff are completely respectful to the parents, the students and visitors. My partner and I recently adopted our son and we wanted to add something to his weekly routine that would help build his confidence as well as teach him self-defense, manners and respect. Working with the instructors and training with kids around his age has really helped our son in so many areas--not just in school, but at home as well. He looks forward to training every week, working towards his goals, and getting a lot of his spirited 6-year-old energy out. My seven year old son needed something that was "his thing". He had done soccer for a couple of years but for one reason or another, he really hadn't taken to it like I had wanted him to. Since I had done martial arts as a kid, I thought it could be what he needed; an activity that showed him the importance of discipline, physical activity, respect and perseverance. There are dozens of martial arts dojos out here in the burb. The last thing we wanted was to send him to some "Cobra Kai" type place or worse, to some place where Taekwondo wasn't "serious". I am sure most people that operate a martial arts studio do it because they love it but in today's economy, I wanted to find a place where my son could grow in his discipline and could make positive connections that would last for years to come. I knew of Pride for some time. Their reputation out here in the burb is very positive. It is known for being a serious martial arts studio but beyond just the technique, we kept hearing about their "creating leaders" mantra. This was very exciting to us because you hope that your kids acquire values through good parenting and experiences but we wanted him to be in a place that would instill them while he learned how to how to handle himself and how to see himself as a good citizen. We took him to Pride and within about five minutes, we knew we had made the right decision. Starting with Master Berry, Miss Ahn, all of the instructors and team members, they all welcomed my boy as if he had been there for years; they encouraged him and have passed down all of their amazing knowledge to him. He has been very active in the studio for eight months and we've seen an improvement in him not only as a martial artist, but also as a leader in process. They strongly stress creating leaders at Pride through their Leadership Program. My son was very excited when he began to do Hyper Fight which is a high-energy format that includes acrobatics, martial arts and some cool Hong Kong movie type tricks. My boy has definitely found something he loves. My kids started here just a few months ago and absolutely love it. They stress the word of the month (goals, integrity, etc) and explain to the kids what this means. I really appreciate the way they try to incorporate the ideals that they are teaching into success in daily life. I've already noticed how this has created a change in how my kids view responsibilities of school and home (like chores)! I especially like how the instructor gear things for the little kids. They teach them at a level they can understand and make it fun for them. At the same time, they don't let my little one get away with something just because she has a cute smile. The instructors have a high standard but try to teach this in a nurturing environment. My husband and I liked it so much we both decided to take the adult classes. I rarely take the time to go on line and write a review (being a busy Mom-on-the-run I usually do word of mouth publicity if I like something ) but this time I feel with all my heart that I need to write this for all the parents that might be wondering and procrastinating and might hold off because of the costs they see on paper...and might think of trying other schools first.. My daughter does not like sports in any way but she loves it here!! I especially enjoy that through the pandemic they found way to teach the kids. Pride Martial Arts is an amazing place filled with amazing instructors who genuinely want to see your child improve and succeed. We started bring our 5 year old to tiny tigers and our 12 year old to karate 4 kids about a month ago. Both boys love it!! Our twelve year old has tried every sport thinkable and has never tried so hard, had so much fun, or talked so much about any of them. We had the privilege to attend a tournament recently where the boys got to watch some very experienced black belts, both kids and adults, needless to say this family is hooked. We took advantage of the free trial week and after the first night it seemed like a no brainer, our kids would be doing this for a long time. Pride Martial Arts is for sure the best Taekwondo studio you can find in San Diego. We are so happy with the progress our son has had in all aspects. Physically he is stronger. He has also learned a lot about being responsible, never give up and work hard to reach his goals. You can see that every member of the studio cares about every child and they all are wonderful people. My son looks forward to go to his practice every day. Pride just continues to surpass all expectations. During the coronavirus outbreak they implemented an online class format using Zoom. Zoom is very intuitive and easy to use. It was an adjustment at first but now our girls have gotten very used to training online. I have noticed significant improvement in my daughters kicking power. Master Berry and Ms Ahn even gave all the families workout mats to provide a soft surface for training. They also do weekly challenges and games to keep us interested. Pride is innovative and remains part of our extended family because they continue to go above and beyond - even in these uncertain times.
