I've been visiting since I was a little girl, and coming back reminded me exactly why it's such a staple on the Strand. This place has been part of Galveston for generations, and it still delivers that same magic. It's always busy, always full of energy, and there's truly something here for everyone. The candy shop alone is worth the stop--rows of old-fashioned sweets, fresh confections, and that nostalgic atmosphere you just don't find anymore. The divinity is divine, and the ice cream is just as good as I remembered. I had the lemon custard (so good!), my brother got a scoop of chocolate on a cone, and my friend ordered cinnamon. My mom insisted she didn't want anything...until she tried my friend's cinnamon. She loved it so much she immediately went and got her own, which says everything. And for $5 a scoop, two could easily share. This is one of those must-stop places when you're on the Island. Whether you're there for the ice cream, the candy, or just the experience, it never disappoints. A+.

This is the only ice cream I favor over blue bell brand, Wherever I'd watch Bonnie and Clyde the scene when the big police guy exit with the tiny box of ice cream, makes me think of LKC ice cream. I can't leave Galveston without getting my scoop. Pearline pecan tasted better than my fav butter pecan. Only at LA KING'S though. I normally wouldn't get Pearline pecan. No military discount. One scoop is $5. Visit on a Sunday afternoon, it was quite a crowd, in January. Taffy man was making fresh taffy and still throwing it to the crowd. I love seeing this. Glad to see they're keeping old traditions alive.

When I was younger, my parents took me to Hey Mikey's for the first time while we were at The…read moreStrand, right when it first opened, and I got a behemoth of an ice cream cone. I got a t-shirt too that I wore for years until it was ultimately retired. I actually wrote a Yelp review about it that I deleted. In it, I said "The smell of the waffle cones filled the place with smiles and enjoyment. I knew I wanted a waffle cone." What a terrible critic. He will never be Yelp Elite. I haven't been back to Hey Mikey's since then, just because I haven't really been back to Galveston in some time, but my memories of the unique ice cream flavors and toppings remained. Heading back to Galveston for a cruise, I wanted to try and make a stop there again for nostalgia's sake. Instead of heading to the Airbnb, my girlfriend and I drove straight to Hey Mikey's as our first stop in Galveston. We got there around 8:45 pm, which was 15 minutes before they closed (our fault). This is no diss to Hey Mikey's, but almost everything else on The Strand on a Thursday night closes way too early, so it felt like everyone was at Hey Mikey's. The line was extensive in front of us and behind us even after it closed. After waiting through the line for quite some time, I got a waffle cone with their cereal milk ice cream, which had Fruity Pebbles in it, topped with Lucky Charms. They gave it to me with a temperature-changing plastic spoon that turned from yellow to purple when cold. The ice cream was sensational. What an incredible flavor. The only downside was the waffle cone being a little stale, but I fault that to it being a waffle cone ordered right at closing time. The next night, I returned with my cousins and ordered a cup of cereal milk ice cream with Cocoa Puffs as the topping instead. Fantastic stuff. Once again, being there too close to closing meant we had to wait, and we didn't get our ice cream until 9:30, a full 30 minutes after they closed. It was nice that they still served us though! One thing I did notice, which I don't know if it's a normal thing, is that since Hey Mikey's is the only ice cream shop open past 8 o'clock on most weeknights, they seem to get a lot of foot traffic after that time. Their menu is pretty large in its offerings. If it were just scoops of ice cream, the line would move fast, but so many people were ordering shakes, which are a lot more labor-intensive and removed a staff member from their assembly line to focus on the shake. I don't have any advice on how they could easily move the line in the later hours of the night, but man, those kids are working their butts off for everyone to get their late-night sweet treat. Hey Mikey's, you are just as good as I remember.

Why 5 stars? Because you get ice cream and a show here…read more --- --- --- My sister-in-law and her kids came here before and raved about it, so we made it a stop during our time in Galveston. When we initially walked in, they warned us that it would be about 30 minutes, which was shocking, but appreciated. In the meantime, we just sat at the bar, mesmerized by the process of watching them turn liquid into rolled ice cream, time after time. My concoction was vanilla ice cream with oreo, cookie dough, cherries and caramel. I have to say, I think this combo should be a part of the suggested menu, because it was, as they say in the UK, A-1. I wouldn't want to wait that long for ice cream on a regular basis, but we were in no hurry and there was no way we weren't going to wait, given how much it had been a topic of conversation with the family over the course of the week leading up to the visit. And it ended up being really great!

The original store was once ran by Michael Cordray's family a century ago. I think it was his great grandfather's brother. Nonetheless, it's now an amazing ice cream shop with all the vintage feels to it. I should specify that it's a rolled ice cream shop and the perfect treat after a day at the beach or a stroll through town. Lots of mix-ins to choose from to help make your rolled ice cream treat as delicious and unqiue as you are.

Unfortunately, everything surrounding the service left a very bad impression. I was charged for a consultation, which I agreed to in good faith, expecting professionalism and follow-up. However, I had to repeatedly reach out, and even then, responses were inconsistent or nonexistent. Being charged upfront without receiving the expected level of service feels misleading and unprofessional. On top of that, there were interactions that gave off uncomfortable and concerning vibes. It's difficult to ignore behavior that comes across as dismissive or biased, and it significantly impacted my overall experience. Everyone deserves to feel respected and valued as a customer. It's disappointing because the product itself shows real talent, but customer service and professionalism matter just as much. I hope the business takes feedback seriously and improves how they interact with clients in the future.

We hadn't had food from Mama Teresa's in quite some time, but last night I saw a Facebook post from them showcasing their crab claws in spicy marinara. I happen to love crab claws and this post reminded me that Mama Teresa's had some good ones. Tonight's dinner from Mama T's: spicy crab claws and shrimp in marinara and a large pizza with extra cheese, bell peppers, and black olives. We're talking about some excellent eats here. Even our car Rudy approved of the shrimp (de-sauced by his mommy, me) and devoured all the pieces that I allowed him to have. Oh, about that sauce -- it's really good! The spice is bold but there's an underlying depth of flavor that indicates someone takes sauce very seriously indeed. I'm a big fan. While I thought the crab might've been a smidge over cooked (they were still quite tasty), the shrimp were perfection. Orange tabby cats agree! The pizza got a thumbs up from my husband who approved of the quality of the ingredients. That said, he wanted a heavier hand with the toppings and a little more tang in the sauce. I enjoyed it, but both of us wanted more rise in the crust and some char. Ours was a pick up order, but next time we'll dine in. Dan noticed that their draft beer selection was better than most, and the wine choices were okay, too. My take away - visit places that you've unintentionally put on the back burner. You'll probably be very pleasantly surprised. Eat and shop locally!!
