Food- the pan dulce is nothing to write home about. A little bland if there is no powdered sugar. Service- the customer service was bad. I gave it a chance even with the reviews but yikes. Mrs Chapa the owner makes the most incredible Pineapple empanadas, like no other. They are so flaky and full of pineapple, they taste so so good that we drive from Pearland to get them. She also makes her own German chocolate frosting on cakes & cupcakes. A must if you like German chocolate. read more

I don't eat bread very often as most people who read my reviews know. But when I do...... this is the best Mexican style bakery on Galveston island. There's others, but this one has been around since forever ago and it's the best one. Small family owned business. They have lots of good stuff. But my favorites are their Mexican panadería style cookies. The chocolate and also the strawberry ones. Super yummy. Go give this place a try. You'll love it. read more

Cute family-owned bakery! Before the drive back up to Houston, the BF and I stopped here for treats after a day at Pleasure Pier and Seawolf Park. To my great surprise (and excitement), half the items were dairy-free as they were made with shortening instead of butter. I filled up a paper bag with tons of goodies for just $5! The flaky, perfectly sweetened apple turnover was our favorite, followed by the handheld apple pie, stuffed to the brim with a delightful apple filling. A concha that we bought for a friend was quickly devoured, but the cookies were just alright. If I find myself down in Galveston again, I'd definitely stop by! read more

This is a small family owned bakery that has been around for years. They have mexican sweet breads, cookies, and other pastries in a glass case and they also take cake orders. Yes the baked goods are good and it is a bakery but believe it or not the best thing IMO that comes from this bakery are the tamales...yes the tamales! They sell them year-round (not just at Christmas time) and they are so good but beware they are not cheap. Aside from the tamales the mexican cookies are also good. I've been coming to this bakery for over 30 years. My parents are friends with the older lady behind the counter that you will usually talk to. Every once in a while, her son will take your order as well. I mainly come for one thing, the BEST TAMALES IN THE WORLD, as I like to call them. I've taken many friends and family here whenever I'm in town, and they all pretty much agree with me that they are awesome. They have regular or spicy pork tamales to choose from, and they are the perfect ratio of masa to meat, in my opinion. The grease flavor will imbed in your mouth and brain forever and you will crave these tamales. They aren't cheap, but well worth it. I just bought a half dozen this morning, and they currently sell for $6.50 for half dozen, or I think $13 for full dozen. read more

My family has been going to this old bakery on Broadway for over 40 years to get their homemade tamales. These are tamales made the way we like them--with lard, a perfect wrapping of masa--not too thick, not too thin--and the meat perfectly seasoned. They are moist, spicy and incredibly delicious, and we never drive by without stopping to pick up at least a dozen warm tamales, tied with twine and wrapped in foil. I'm in the Pac NW now, and buy extra whenever I go back to visit my grandmother--I freeze them in the foil, pop in a baggie, and pack in my luggage for the trip home! Mmm, the thought of a couple of these and an ice cold long neck while sitting on the beach is making me homesick! I wish this company did mail-order! Oh, and I love their Mexican cookies--short (texture, not size!) and not too sweet, but thick and toothy! Delicious! read more

Since this business is "unclaimed," my guess is the owner won't even see this, so take it for what it's worth. We had planned on getting some BBQ, then grabbing some baked goods for breakfast tomorrow before leaving town. There is a good deal of construction, limiting access to the businesses on Broadway and 55th. I parked in the only available lot, mind you there was a sign saying Texas * Bakery Parking, though vague to be sure as that sign seemed to possibly only apply to spots to my left. Anyway, we walked to Leon's next door, planned to order, then while waiting, grab some baked goods. But, when we walked into Leon's, the lady had called him already to complain that I took up a parking place she claimed as hers. Consequently, I had to move my truck. Again, construction forced me to go through 2 alleys, down a blocked off road, and park in someone else's business lot. Then, upon collecting our BBQ, had to walk my family through the shoulder of Broadway, which is at best, unsafe. Then, I went to Shipleys for some doughnuts. So, your food might be great, but seriously, who cares? You're mean, lady. You and Leon have been sharing that space for 40 years. Perhaps some grace for potential customers while construction creates unsafe scenarios. read more

Came in today after work and tried their bread pudding. It was soooo deeelish and only $1.00 for a huge piece! Will be coming here regularly from now on to try their other yummy looking pastries. Looks like they also serve breakfast burritos and tamales. Will have to try those as well. read more

I wanted to give some really good treats to a friend. I like to purchase from small businesses. I Wanted a cake or cute cookies. Hardly any variety. Then when I ordered pecan sandies they were served in a paper bag so they all crumbled to pieces. I tried a piece and it just crumbled even more. Very plain and hardly any pecans. Don't waste your money on them. So I'm still on the hunt since these went in the trash. Would have done better with grocery store cookies. read more

My husband and I went to Texas Star Bakery because we wanted to support a local vendor. On google it said they opened at seven o'clock but discovered upon arrival that was wrong and they didn't open until eight. So we waited. The elderly woman who was running the place didn't seem like she wanted to be there, she didn't greet us as we entered the store. She actually seemed upset that we were ordering some cookies and tamales. When we went to pay she didn't have her credit card reader ready. This thing also prints the receipts and she started grumbling about having to do that. She took our payment handed back the card and then greeted the next customer in the store blowing us off without a thank you or have a nice day. Yes we are a Interracial couple. We have never ever been treated this way in Galveston. We have had people treat us rudely in other states but never in Texas. I don't know if it was the women's rudeness or possibly the tamales she gave us, we ordered mild but these were spicy even my husband who lives spicy food found them a bit spicy. These tamales were fresh from the steamer a little soft and steamer hot. We both ate a couple since we were hungry and hadn't eaten in 14 hours, and we both got upset stomachs. My advice save your hard earned money, go where you are treated with respect and Courtesy. It's a shame she has all this religion items displayed praising the Lord and treats people like that. Maybe she should remember Jesus said, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34-35). read more

We were short on time to order our wedding cake and did the tasting and placed the order 6 days prior to the wedding. They were very accommodating and the cake on the day of the event turned out superbly fantastic, both in decoration and taste it was the best wedding cake or just cake in fact I have ever had. I came here based on the reviews. We picked up a dozen of the spicy pork tamales. Oh my goodness, they are the best I have ever eaten. The spiciness has the perfect amount of heat--not overwhelming, but you know it's there. We will definitely be back. read more

Took the advice found here and tried the pork tamales. I am not a food critic but I am very picky. They were as good as any I've ever had. The seasoning was right on target. Note: They are not particularily hot, so add your own favorit heat. I won't be able to order tamales from the ladies in the office anymore because they don't measure up to Texas Star Bakery. read more

The parking is very limited. The staff was about as friendly as a fence post. There was no coffee, and when asked for flavor choices i was made to feel like woo. Also, the Mexican cookies remind me of the flavor of honey mustard. Skip this stop! read more

The absolute best tamales and I have eaten them from a lot of cities . I am from San Antonio but this little shop is unmatched. We just went to try the before we ordered for Christmas eve. Wow.
