The best thing about living here is the resident community. We have a wonderful social life and many friends from all over the country. Employees are well trained, friendly and efficient! Initially, the dining and kitchen staff had vacancies, but that has changed. Daily continental breakfasts are provided, with Wednesday offering a variable of scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. Every other Sunday a hearty brunch is provided and is excellent! The evening dinner is also provided in the Dining Room. Depending upon personal preference, a menu is completed the day before and returns to the kitchen. Staffing can alter whether it will be a buffet style or seated dining. Soup, salad, entrèe, and a variety of sides and a dessert is included as a part of the monthly rent. Access to Doctors Making House Calls, Legacy Physical Therapy, a gym and a heated pool are also available on site. This was after she got kicked in the stomach by another resident, her purse was stolen, and she was neglected and ignored by many. She never received a documented care plan and all we experienced was routine shoulder shrugging. There are a lot of sad parts of this long story but few are as pathetic as the fact that the only time we feel their sense of urgency is now, on Yelp where they're suddenly interested in talking. The administration is not only poorly managed but seems indifferent to the well-being of its residents. The turnover rate for staff is alarmingly high, which speaks volumes about the toxic work environment and lack of training or support provided to employees. As a result, the level of care my mother received was inconsistent at best, and at worst, neglectful. Some of the staff were caring people, without a doubt, but staff were frequently overwhelmed, confused and unfamiliar with residents due to turnover. Communication from the administration to families was almost nonexistent. When I reached out with concerns, I was met with indifference or vague reassurances that were never followed through on. Clearly, the main concern of the administration is profits. This is not the kind of care anyone deserves, especially our senior loved ones who should be treated with dignity and respect.

The dining room food is restaurant quality, with daily specials and a decent fixed menu if you don't want the specials. The fixed menu changes every couple months. The exercise classes are both mentally and physically engaging. There is a lovely movie theater room, art room, outdoor seating area and garden. At the entrance there is a grand piano, bar, and bistro. A resident recently taught a Zentangle class in the art room. She started with "The difference between Zentangle and doodling is mindfulness vs. mindlessness" and without missing a beat another woman said "and you think that's going to help us?!" while a third snorked. The location is unusual, literally minutes away from a hospital, doctors, rehab and temporary assisted living, restaurants (Wasabi has outstanding sushi and sashimi), Costco, hotels, grocery, shopping, plus a lake and outdoor amphitheater walking distance. There is a pool and water aerobic classes, PT. There is a physician's assistant who visits and makes rounds every Friday, simply email or call. The place allows dogs and there are quite a few from small to large. While it is independent living, some have personal assistants and they allow hospice for those couples who don't want to split up (eye opening, hadn't considered that prior to seeing this place). I had a long conversation with many of the residents who moved from other facilities and said there was no comparison. One resident moved the same time as my parents from another Atria facility in Durham (he's quiet until he wants to talk, and then you get a wealth of information). He loves the fact that management has the freedom to manage. Initially the lighting in the theater room was bad, and it took six months but they changed it and now the theater is lovely. He said they will entertain any reasonable request. While I personally didn't do the level of research into senior communities that my parents and sister did since I don't live in NC, the consensus and my experience show this is an outstanding residence and community.

Covid was handled beautifully with masking required and meal delivery to apartments. Unfortunately, things haven't bounced back as much as hoped, impacted by short staffing and staff turnover. During the time of lowest staffing, menus and meal preparation went downhill; however, things are improving significantly. Staffing situations have also caused maintenance and housekeeping to be below par, but the light at this particular tunnel is beginning to be visible. Parking remains abysmal for residents. Improvements have been promised for months but nothing has changed. There are many opportunities for activities, movies, special dining events, vaccinations, and others. I will remain a happy member of the Reserve community.
