I booked a Friday after work appt and was excited to get my hair done and had a lot do this weekend and had been working hard all week. I booked a press and curl. I got there on time but walked in a little late because of a little confusion with directions. Which was ok as she was finishing up with a client. There was another girl that got there at the same time as me that she started working on. So early on I realized she double booked me. She kept things pretty short with me but seemed to know the other client pretty well and they were talking a lot. Anyway I got there at five, and by seven all that had happened was a shampoo and condition and a lot of sitting under the dryer. She also upsold a protein treatment that she said was going to make the press and curl last longer so it would take my total from 150 to 200. Meanwhile the girl who got there at the same time as my appt had had her shampoo blowdry and style. After sitting under the dryer for a while realizing this was taking way longer than needed and being deprioritized making the experience feel less luxurious and honestly disrespectful, I decided to just have her blow dry my hair so I could leave with daylight to spare. She blow dried my hair hurriedly and left a wet spot so I had to ask her to finish her work. I didn't leave with my silk press and my time was disrespected and my hair plans had to pivot. I'm lucky I didn't have somewhere to be afterwards. It didn't even make sense for me to pay for the extra protein treatment that she said was recommended to make my press last longer because my hair didn't even get pressed. It's three stars because the treatment was effective and my hair felt nice. I ended up paying 100$ total for a blow dry that I didn't want. I didn't feel respected or prioritized. I can't go back anyway because she's located in New York but I was hoping to establish some ongoing rapport. You might want to shop around for a different stylist if you're looking for warmth and professionalism to along with skills and expertise. But if you're looking for a style in a pinch you might get lucky with the press and curl bar if you don't get double booked. read more

This review is months too late!!! I thank my lucky stars I discovered this salon on Yelp. I had a very unconventional wedding, but I wanted to look full glam. The owner did my hair, my mom's hair, and the flower girl's hair. We all looked sensational, first of all. My hair looked even better than I could have imagined, and it stayed that way for about 3 days! My mom got compliments all night. I was blown away by my experience at this salon. It was luxurious, pleasant, and delightful in every way. Micha was soul food; her personality and genuineness just oozed out of her. I felt so safe in her chair. This was hands down the best hair experience I've had as an adult. Why would I lie about several women waiting for service? Why would I fabricate these things? The woman actually said...."Your hair, and your daughter's hair is in excellent condition!" Yes. I do my own hair, because I have had so many terrible experiences from "licensed cosmetoglogists", that I GAVE UP ON BLACK SALONS. And, in the last few years of YouTube, many women have. Licenses are useless, if people are harmed, or services are rendered poorly. I grew my hair to waist length. No one else. I just wanted a bit of pampering, and we were pressed for time. Further..... We BOTH got heat damage! I booked two appointments with Jeanen, one for my daughter and one for me. My daughter's appointment was booked 2 weeks before mine. At the time, I had no issues with the salon or Jenean. Jenean seemed quite pleasant and my daughter had no complaints. This was her first salon experience and the end results were very nice. I didn't start to worry until my daughter told me that her hair "wouldn't go back curly" after she washed it. I had already had my hair done by Jeanen at this time, but typically I give my hair a few weeks with a few light protein before reaching a conclusion. I have never had heat damage before in this past. As a natural, you are always looking for someone who is going to treat your hair with respect. Natural hair has been so ridiculed in our own salon industry and it is always important to me that I receive service from someone who is going to treat my hair the way that I would treat it. The ONE STAR is strictly for the young woman who completed my shampoo. She was absolutely fantastic. She was great at scrubbing my scalp and when she detangler my hair, she detangler it with the conditioner on it. That's exactly what I would have done. I was ecstatic! Prior to writing this review, I would have described Jeanen as effecient. She blow dried my hair quickly, definitely quicker than any stylist before her. Jeanen was also very conversational and funny. The salon as a whole had a very positive vibe, which is the reason for the SECOND STAR. Needless to say, it has been almost a month since my appointment and I can confidently say that my "Healthy Press N Curl" has resulted in heat damage for me and my daughter. My daughter and I actually have very different hair types. My daughter is a fine/silky 3C and I am a thick/coarse 4AB mix. There is absolutely no reason why the same amount of heat should be used on our hair. My daughter's a hair is nearly straight after just a blow dry. I am devestated and wished I would have looked deeper into the reviews before booking. I paid over $300 (a trim is an extra $30) for both of us to leave the salon with damaged hair and now I have to pay more money to try and repair some of that damage. You ready for this story time? Okay so I'm a truck driver right, and because I literally driver across the states it's always a challenge to find someone to do my hair. So I asked my friend who lived in this area if she knew anyone aaaand now entering: The Press and Curl bar. Booking the appointment: I called and asked the lady if they can do a frontal sew-in (with the hair included) and she says yes gives me the price ask for a deposit and Told me that I was to pay half now half later. Mind you the full service including the hair was a little over a thousand bucks... Yeah I know. Downtown L.A. So with that being said I had my four o' clock appointment set and I was ready to go. The appointment: Parking in L.A. sucks honestly especially since I'm driving my dang semi lol we ended up finding a lot that was close by around 2pm and I waited around to make sure I was on time. Showing up exactly at four because y'all know if you are a split second late go ahead and add an extra 50 to the service. So I'm greeted by this young woman who was really pleasant but she informs me that they are actually running behind and it will be an extra 45mins to an hour. Yeah okay..? Sure I don't mind waiting. Once it was time, they got me washed conditioned and then the messery started.... The person who was actually going to install my sew in was speaking to the wash girl (who was actually really dope person to just talk to) He asked her to go check out the closure piece and make sure everything was ready. I looked up and was like "wait, closure?" He calmly "explains" to me ... " yeah we are just going to do a closure on you and it will go from here to here ( pointing at the spot on my head where he would put it) Y'all did I not say I already paid for a FRONTAL. Okay Just making sure we are on the same page. Now I politely say, hey I thought we were going to go with the frontal. "Yeah no we couldn't get that, I thought someone would have called you I'm sorry so we are just going to go with the closure today" Ummmmm.....no thank you that's not what I wanted nor it's not what I paid for. So now what are we going to do? I'm sitting in the chair hair still wet under a cap looking crazy. I didn't want To leave worse than what I came in. So the staff start calling everyone and anyone they knew looking for this frontal piece and to no luck. I sat in this place for over 6 hrs and left with a press and curl that lasted the two minutes I was in that shop because the wind and weather outside definitely had it's way with it In conclusion: The owner did stop by and apologize and offered a refund. So amazing. I loved my experience. It is in the heart of downtown, so be aware as far as parking is concerned. I just ubered down here because I knew it was going to be a problem finding decent parking. I walked in, gave my name, and waited for about 10 min, got a consult, and was on my way. I got a blowout and flatiron. I have thicker, natural hair that I rarely straighten, so I was a little nervous. But once Micha got her hands on my scalp during the shampoo, any worries fell to the wayside. I mean nothing is better than a good shampoo. I also noticed how amazing my hair looked after the shampoo and condition. It looked a lot less frizzy than it normally does when I get it done. Of course the rest of the process went smoothly and I left with an amazing flat iron. I also loved that she gave me great tips to keep my hair up while I work out and how to keep it from shedding so much when I wash it at home. If you love any of the products, she sells everything in store. I got some edge control that did well for me until my workouts got the better of it. Oh well! Thank you Micha for the tips!! I've been natural (4c) for 8 years and have had the pleasure and misfortune of encountering various stylists. Micha's salon, located downtown, is sophisticated and pristine. The owner creates a very welcoming vibe and has a great personality. Her prices are very competitive, and some services do not change price based on length or thickness of hair, which is kind. There are so many reasons why I wanted to love this salon, but unfortunately, after my wash/dry/flat iron, my hair was heat damaged and my edges will not revert to their natural state. The style itself was cute, but I was distraught after washing my hair a couple of times and discovering the damage. I cannot recommend this salon for other naturals, but those with relaxed hair may have better outcomes. read more

Update Response to Owner: The stylist who damaged my hair and overcharged me was Jeanine. Her son was celebrating a recent birthday on the day that I came in for service. I would have appreciated a timelier response or acknowledgement. I would have more appreciated the business inquiring who the stylist was or any particular details. That would have shown some commitment to correction. Much like my still-damage hair which is slowly growing out, MY ORIGINAL ASSESSMENT REMAINS largely unchanged: The salon is in a small, well-appointed studio space downtown.  When you are there, it feels spacious.  Everyone there was personable. What I liked was that everything seemed straightforward.  Their list of services are on their website. I arrived on time and had to wait for the stylist, Jeanine, to finish her other customer.  Wait, Tandem work, Wait, sole client.  I don't really feel any way about this, the waiting or tandem work.  I wonder if it contributed to less attention in a meaningful way. I wanted the ends of my hair to be trimmed, so I inquired about getting it straightened and trimmed.  I was told that a trim is part of the "Healthy Press & Curl."  I still have all of this in writing in an email. The stylist washed, blow dried, marcel hot combed, flat ironed, and trimmed my hair.  I mentioned to the stylist that I wanted my hair trimmed, because like to be clear and made sure that this was communicated directly to Jeanine from my booking.  I was charged an extra fee for the trim--despite being told that it was part of the service prior to the appointment AND making it clear prior to the appointment that this is what I wanted done.  It was disturbing to me that she added it to the bill without even one word to me about it.   --- To be clear, at no point did Jeanine state that a trim would cost more. She made a comment about how uneven my hair was, WHICH IS WHY I wanted a trim. I found out that I was charged extra when she handed over the payment device. She said not one word. --- I said nothing at this affront. I paid, overtipped, and left.  It wasn't really worth any of my energy to protest or engage in a scene, but it did leave a final impression. My hair is fine and hit my mid-neck in length (i.e., less than shoulder length).  There is no way I was charged for "a cut" rather than a trim.  Per the policy of the salon and the service I contracted for in writing, I should not have been charged for a trim at all.  Immediately before leaving the appointment, I smelled of burnt hair, the tell-tale sign of heat damage!  This smell persisted and persists.  Now the odor is more like hojicha, but I know what it is.  This smell coupled with my denatured curls, means that way too much heat was applied to my hair.  I trusted the experience of the stylist to my own detriment.     My hair is fine (light, small caliber strands) not thin (meaning sparse).  I believe that they stylist used too much heat, because she does not make a distinction between fine, medium, or thick 4C hair.  She also apparently did not test my hairs' response to heat.  --- My hair is always in braids and fine, so it straightens very easily, very quickly.  The amount of heat that she applied to my hair during blow drying and the flat iron was entirely too much.  Now my hair is permanently heat damaged.   ---- The point of using a flat iron is that I don't want the permanent straightening or damage of any kind (heat or chemical). I wanted to like this salon.  I was even considering going back and giving it a second try, but really there are too many things - despite the staff being personable - that would make that a quite bad idea. Honestly, three would be an average experience and this was less than what should be acceptable service.  You may have a different experience, but be aware that this happened recently at the salon with a popular stylist. read more

That's harder to do on my virgin 4c hair but the end result was excellent. More recently I got natural hair twists done in her salon that are so cute and perfect for summer. I love that when you come here you're not just waiting around forever. They were busy the last time I came in but they got me to the wash bowl right at my appointment time. I started getting my hair braided by Lucy in June 2015. I have had my hair in braids ever since that day. She is awesome at what she does and gives 5 star service each time. She has done my weave, regular extensions and twists (which I have now). I vist her about every month to a month and a half. Her prices are extremely competitive as well. I am so glad that she is able to open this place up and be her own boss. I just visited her new shop on 4/17/16 to have my braids done and it's very cute. This review is for Jeannine. This woman is THE TRUTH!!! I have extensions and I went to her for a press and curl. First of all, she was ON TIME, which rarely happens at salons, and extremely sweet and professional. She took me straight through. Not your typical salon where you're waiting for 2-3 other people to get done while you're being serviced. The conditioner she used was AMAZING!!! My hair was the softest it's EVER been - even for the entire week after the appointment (including a couple soul cycle workouts lol). And the style- she got the beach wave curls (bed head messiness) I was looking for! I can't remember the last time my hair felt AND looked that bomb! I paid my consultation fee and spoke to the hairstylist for about five minutes in which she stated she would call me within the next week to confirm who my stylist would be for the day, and to finalize my start time to have my hair done. During my brief consultation we didn't discuss much except for a picture I showed her of the hairstyle I was interested in. I typically go for a deep condition, blow dry/light straightening and trim. Happy with the result every time.
