The turbines at Windy Flats are massive. You hear them before you understand the size. It's not a roar. It's a pulse. That low, clean whoosh takes your attention. I stopped & filmed one from base to blade, the whole height in one slow pan. Just the sound of wind & steel working without apology. Not everything monumental needs a monument.

Windy Flats is the largest windmill energy project in WA, a state that has several. Each windmill stands 70 meters tall and the blades are 50 meters. These giants have the capacity to generate 500 megawatts of renewable energy. Standing tall in the ridge with the rolling hills and the magestic Columbia River, an known for being windy, it is a stunning sight! Views from Maryhill Winery, Highway 14 and Highway 97 are boundless. There are several pullovers so you can take in the sights safely. Construction for Windy Points began in 2009 with an initial investment of $1 billion. This new revenue stream has finically helped the down of Goldendale, which was in a decline, and created over 350 jobs. However, there is still debate over the effect of these added winds on the natural habitat and the many birds and animals that live here. Especially the raptures. The human and animal health effects of wind power are still being explored and are not yet fully understood.

Was there on a Sunday and found most businesses in the historic downtown closed. The murals are stunning and beautiful, pulled up a map on my phone drove and walked around. Visiting the town to see the murals is worth the stop!

This business is a "for profit" business. As such, I would think they would be required to post…read moretheir prices, which to my knowledge they do not. We were visiting relatives in Washington and this tour of, "the city of murals" which Toppenish, Wa. is known for looked like an interesting tour for the kids and adults alike. As such our relative made an appointment to meet the horse drawn wagon tour director the next day at a parking lot in Toppenish, so we could go on the horse drawn wagon tour. I was surprised when my relative asked the owner/operator how much it costs for the tour upon our arrival.. I was even more surprised when he stated it is, $15.00 per person. So, we paid $75.00 for 3 adults and two children. It was also a clue when we were the sole people meeting the operator for the tour. The tour consists of the operator and another younger man controlling the movements of two horses that evidently have ancestors in Norway. We "toured" approximately 7 to 9 streets looking at murals on the sides of buildings within the city, while traffic buzzed around us. While the tour operator did have a microphone and used it to "explain" what we were looking at, it was difficult at best to take any pictures of quality as the wagon was constantly moving, stopping, taking off etc. What did we walk away with for $15.00 a head? Nothing worthy of note. I would recommend walking to look at the, "city of murals." For $75.00 I clearly felt we had been taken advantage of as "tourists." As we left the town of Toppenish we saw the prettiest and most detailed mural the city likely has to offer. That was not on the tour and the pictures that had explanations or descriptions of the various murals cannot be read. I was left wondering if the $15.00 per head charge was what this outfit usually charges or the mere question of, "how much" while we stood in an empty parking lot, caused the operator to capitalize on an opportunity that likely does not come his way often. I would not recommend this tour to anybody. It is a 'tourist scam and rip off." We learned nothing that we could not have learned by merely strolling through the small town, field trip style.

We were overcharged for what was advertised as a curated, prepaid wine tour -- yet what we got was the complete opposite. Our driver, Lisa, was completely unprepared and clearly had no idea what she was doing. She didn't even realize that one of the wineries she was supposed to take us to was closed. That alone shows a total lack of planning or professionalism.  Lisa failed to communicate with the wineries ahead of time (which was supposed to be part of her job), and it was obvious she hadn't done any due diligence for our scheduled stops. The entire tour felt like it was being thrown together on the spot, and for the price we paid, that's simply unacceptable. I wouldn't recommend this tour to anyone -- not tourists, not locals, not even casual wine drinkers. There are so many great experiences to be had in the Hood River area. This just isn't one of them!

This weekend we got around to investing more time in the trails of Butte and it was pretty fun. The trails don't allow for a complete loop around the rock, as there's a block for restoration on the east side. But you can wander most of the way around the water side...up and around the rocks is really where's it at though. There are 3 access points to the top from the trails, and the bouldering up is loads of fun. Once atop you can roam all about and enjoy fabulous views from every angle. While the remainder of the trails at Butte are average, we found it pretty entertaining to climb around the rock portion. There's a decent amount of parking...Discover Pass required...as well at a vault toilet at the trailhead.
