After the most thorough exam I ever had, Dr. Sheldon took the time to review my MRI and X-rays with me. He actually explained what I was looking at on the MRI. After discussing my concerns and fears about having the surgery, he persuaded me to try alternative treatments. He corroborated the serious nature of the surgery and the risks involved and told me honestly that I should not rush into this. I found that extremely impressive, since he operates for a living. I would recommend Dr. Sheldon to anyone with a spinal or brain issue. This is when you really need a doctor who is more interested in the welfare of their patient versus the financial reward.

This neurosurgeon recommended an L2-L3 lumbar fusion involving removal of the disc, placement of a titanium cage with cadaver bone and protein, and four screws. Surgery was actually being scheduled. What concerned us was that his own assessment stated there were no significant radicular symptoms and that the right hip and thigh weakness we were experiencing was not explained by the lumbar MRI and could have a non-spinal cause. Given the seriousness and potential risks of spinal fusion, we decided to seek two completely independent medical opinions before proceeding. Both physicians disagreed with the recommendation and strongly advised us not to go forward with the proposed surgery. That experience was extremely troubling to us. We are very grateful that we did not proceed without obtaining additional opinions. I cannot speak to the doctor's motivations, but I can speak to our experience: we were being prepared for a major lumbar fusion that two other independent physicians subsequently advised us not to have. If you are considering major spine surgery, please ask questions, understand all of your alternatives, and consider obtaining a second and even a third independent opinion before making your decision.

This was the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced with a healthcare company. I called for my husband not too long ago today and she rudely hung up on me while I was - very nicely may I add - explaining how much pain my husband was in, and that there is a technology issue with receiving information via fax to get an appointment scheduled. There is something wrong with this person. My husband's doctor faxed paperwork over 3 different times this week and they are telling us they are not getting it - hence why I was hoping for an alternative way to receive the paperwork needed to get the appointment. Seems they do not care much for patients or trying to assist with resolving any issues like this that come up. At this point, I'm not even sure I want my husband in the care of this place. A simple test was all that was needed to get scheduled, if they cannot even get that right, how can we trust their medical services too?

I've been managing a post-traumatic headache for over a year. The neurologist I've seen regularly recommended that I try a headache specialist after exhausting other available options. Dr. Robbins was one of the recommendations he made. I called in early November and was greeted with a brusque, "Doctor's Office" by the person who answered the phone. After clarifying that I had called the correct office, I explained that I was a new patient calling to request an appointment. She asked if I wanted an appointment with the nurse practitioner or the doctor. I explained my history, unsure of what the correct answer would be without any context. She acknowledged I should see the doctor and then told me their first available appointment was January 14. I expected a wait. And I realize Dr. Robbins is apparently a good doctor, which translates to being busy. But when you've had a headache for almost 500 days, waiting another two and a half months feels intolerable. I agreed to the January 14 appointment, figuring I would find a way to make it work and that it would be worth it. Until. Until. Until the office called me back and told me Dr. Robbins would now be out of the office on January 14 and would need to reschedule me. For a later date. Are you effing kidding me? I hope other people have better luck. I provided full availability to them, willing to bend over backwards to get some relief from this headache that's been plaguing me. It's disappointing that their customer service is so poor and more disappointing that I would be penalized for a change in the doctor's schedule after waiting 10 weeks to be seen.

My elder sister was referred to Glenbrook ER from urgent care. The waiting room was full. They triaged her and started an IV for fluids, and put her back in the waiting room in a wheelchair. They gave her one that had a broken footrest even though there were others available. Not a huge deal but also not very comfortable, especially for a petite person. (They did give her another when I asked.) There were many people in the waiting room with IVs, people vomiting into emesis bags, people coughing, people moaning in pain. Some were masked and some were not. There were several recliners and lucky patients snagged one to sleep in. We arrived at 4 pm and I got one for my sister at around 10 or 11 pm. At 11 pm, I asked how much longer it would be and was told there were still 6 people who had arrived before her. Also, there were 16 patients in ER beds who needed to go upstairs but there were no beds. She finally was taken back at 1 am and saw a doctor at 2 am, a 10-hour wait. They were going to admit her and run more tests, so I decided to go home and get some sleep. Then at 4 am I learned that they were transferring her to Evanston because they had a bed. We had a good experience with the doctors and nurses. But the system is broken. In the future, if we have another option, I'd do that instead.

At Glenbrook mammography was so very kind doing my mammogram. She smiled, apologized for being late, helped me in all ways possible and kept encouraging me I was doing a great job. She was such a sweetheart after a long wait, I hugged her and she made me smile. On my way out, I asked for help at the reception desk as I parked at the wrong entrance and got quite lost going into the hospital. Laurie K. Was so nice! She even took time to walk me out and walk me all the way to the easiest exit to where my car was parked! I also got a hug from her so as I made my long walk back to my car, I smiled all the way! They both told me they could call someone to help me leave but I declined that. I have severe leg neuropathy so walking is difficult and painful. It's so wonderful when a smile, some encouragement and...a hug can turn a bad experience into a good one!
