The Cafe is a decent spot for coffee and a Cornish Pastry. Wear good walking shoes, ie cross trainers or hiking boots. Also, this place is free! Well, it does costs to park, but we didn't bother and never got ticketed during our hour visit.

A stone's throw away from the beach and Bexhill's famous De La Warr Pavilion, The Northern sits comfortably in the centre of a quiet seaside town in the heart of 1066 Country. Run by the lovely Simms family and their friendly staff, who'll always go the extra mile to make their guests feel as happy and comfortable as humanly possible, and are always available for a chat. There are suites, double, twin and single rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and some with lovely sea views. The hotel has two restaurants, the bright and airy Garden Room outlooking the well kept garden, and The Richmond Room, a larger more traditional looking hotel restaurant, to the front of the building. The food and service is exceptional; three course meals with homemade traditional food, and tantalising desserts finished with filtered coffee and mints, served by their excellent silver service waiting staff. The prices are very reasonable, some could say even a little too cheap for the service and quality that comes with it. As well as all this, there's the Wellington Room Bar complete with an outdoor balcony and upstairs you'll find a library and lounge, all of which are regularly used for functions. The menu is very swish, featuring dishes such as seared scallops, petit sale, smoked roe and salmon blini, with horseradish cream and gressingham duck breast, caramelised red chicory, with hazelnut dressing, but considering how good it is, it is extremely reasonably priced - only £15.50 for two courses, £19.50 for three. I had hamhock and pickled walnut terrine to start, followed by guineafowl and dumplings, and finished with a salt caramel chocolate pudding which was damn good. The service was attentive, and the presentation of the food was great, my terrine came attractively arranged on a slate platter. I didn't see any of the rooms, but if you are looking for a place to go for a special meal I would strongly recommend Pelham House. The garden has a slightly Mediterranean feel with lots of sculptures and some palms, and a dovecot adds charm to the courtyard car park, although it seems to house a rather lonely solitary dove.

Bar staff attentive and friendly. Would stay again for sure. Only 2 niggles which are small - first being they could use frosted lower windows in the room we stayed in - no net curtains, therefore people in corridor opposite could see straight in, also, no breakfast menu in room even though they gladly provide breakfast in room - resulted in amusing 10 minute phone call to reception re what we could order. I would definitely stay again, short walk from station too.

It was never slick. But the food was great and the atmosphere was so relaxed. We'd often have the entire dining room to ourselves. Not good for the owners, be we liked the peacefulness. And, best of all, they welcome pets. The hotel recently changed hands, and the surprisingly extensive grounds have been replanted and dotted with garden furniture and large ornaments. There is a regimented forest of Ash trees and a pool and a peacock and two lakes with row boats and a kitsch swan pedal-oh and several gazebos.. We went there last weekend for afternoon tea to celebrate my Mother's birthday. We had booked for 6 but had a last minute change to 8. We arrived to a warm welcome and wandered about in the gardens. There was no one about. None of the tables that had been used had been cleared. It all looked rather abandoned. Eventually a waiter appeared and said 'How many of you are there?' We said hello and did a head count for him. 'Eight'. We were in the doorway to the garden by the entrance to the pool. 'You wanna sit here?' he blurted out, gesturing to the nearest table. There was a paper Starbucks coffee cup left on it. 'No thank you. We'd like two tables put together further in the garden please'. He turned and left without a word and sometime later emerged with a colleague and laid two tables for us. We asked for tea, finger sandwiches and scones with proper fresh cream and jam. What arrived was very plain big triangle sandwiches, with no garnish. Just tuna, turkey and cheese and processed ham pitted with air bubbles on supermarket bread. The scones were mean little bullet-like supermarket ones and the cream was dazzlingly brilliant white and sugar-sweet and foam-like. Two small pots of tea were brought out with 3 tea bags in each. There is so much amazing produce available in that area. They could have put together an amazing cream tea and charged a few quid more if need be (ours was £9.90 a head). They could set up tables dotted around the grounds. If felt like they were just doing the bare minimum to maximise profits. I had instantly realised that they had brought out tea and food for 6 people, not 8. The 12 scones were a clear indication I was correct. But as the quality was so lacking, we counted this as a blessing. The tea ran out after one and a half cups each. I went to find a waiter to ask for either some hot water or just more fresh pots. No one was in sight. I asked at reception and was told 'This is reception. I don't serve tea. You need a waiter'. Indeed. I headed into the bar and asked for more tea. Then, later, the girl on reception left here computer and came and served us the tea. Such a contradiction. Then I went to pay before my father jumped in. It seemed very expensive. They hadn't allowed for a deposit that had been placed and had charged us for 8 people. They had also charged us full price for the second round of tea. After some debating, the waiter went to the kitchen to confirm how many people they had catered for. It had been 6, because luckily no one thought to convey the change of booking to the kitchen. They deducted two lots of £9.90, but refused to deduct the £20 for the second round of tea. But all in all, we had a delightful afternoon. We could have stayed until nightfall. They never hurry or rush you away. We wandered the grounds. Walked our dog. Played on the swings and climbing frame (my niece) and sat by the lake and chatted and took photos. The setting is really beautiful, and in a few years, when the new planting has been given a chance to get established and grown in, it will be even more charming. However, I very much doubt I'll be back to see it. Note to owner, Afternoon tea should come with limitless pots of tea, especially when your house blend is PG Tips.

This is a really excellent hotel, I had a very relaxing stay here…read more It's right on the sea front, opposite the pier, so my room at the front of the building had a lovely view of the sea, and all along the promendade. The room itself was very comfortable and the bed was fantastic. The decor is simple and modern and everything was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was well thought out, with nice toiletries and a really deep bath, which made for an excellent relaxing soak after I went for a run. There are also a few other nice touches like herbal tea bags, and bottles of water in the little fridge. The owner/manager was really superb, he told me the best route for my run, and sorted out my meals (vegan and wheat free), with no fuss or hassle at all. For dinner, I had roasted veg in a tomato sauce, and for breakfast I had a fruit platter and some porridge. The breakfast isn't buffet style, so everything is prepared fresh, and the fruit was the best I have had in a hotel for a long time, in fact probably ever. Deliciously fresh melon, apple, pear, grape and pineapple. I would definitely stay here again.

Dogs are allowed everywhere in the hotel including the restaurant! Everyone is dog mad and our dog was told she was beautiful many, many times. Sitting at the bar enjoying a drink, dog gets a bowl of water, this isn't the welcome you normally get. It would've been nice, though, if we were directed to the nearest places out dog could toilet when we checked in. (Overnight) if you are a light sleeper, do not take one of the rooms facing the seafront in summer. The road is used constantly and with the windows open it makes it difficult to sleep, but the view is worth it for those of us who are willing to make the sacrifice. As an older hotel, the walls are thin and you can hear people stomping in the corridor. The tea/coffee set to is good, includes bottled water. The bathroom small but functional although it did take me awhile to figure out his to turn the shower on. I would still come back here again.

It was incredibly relaxing, and the lunch was rather large, though did take quite a long time to come out. The second day we returned for high tea which was beautifully presented. A lovely time with friendly staff. Would have loved to stay here but it was more practical to rent a flat nearby. Perhaps another time.
