"Seriously?" being a single Mom at the time of my first daughter's picture, I didn't have a lot of extra money but I went ahead and paid for it. When I got the gallery, I realized that it was worth every, single, penny. Kim King is truly an artist. She uses makeup to enhance their natural beauty without over-doing it. Living in Portland, finding a HMUA who specializes or is experienced with Asian brides is a huge challenge (compared to my hometown of LA). I'm so grateful to have found Shawna! Shawna has years of experience, is so talented in her craft, and is wonderful to work with. She is so professional (clean, prompt, responsive), down to earth, calming, and open to feedback -- all qualities a nervous bride wants on her wedding day! I love Shawna's work for my wedding day. She made me feel beautiful, the hair/make-up lasted through the day/night, and her work photographs beautifully (without it looking too cake-y IRL). She also did my mom's hair and make-up, which my mom ended up loving (especially since my mom's has had poor experiences with professional hair and make-up artists in the past). In addition to my wedding hair and make-up, Shawna did two sets of eyelash extensions for me. I'd never gotten lash extensions before, but she was so patient and instructive in explaining the process and teaching me how to take care of them. I cannot recommend Shawna enough for your hair, make-up, or eyelash extension needs!

Not only is Shawna professional, clean, and efficient, all the things you want in a makeup artist - she is also so creative, talented and personable. Shawna made me feel so beautiful on my wedding day! I normally wear minimal makeup in my daily life, so for my wedding I was concerned about looking way overdone. Shawna absolutely nailed what I asked for. She made me feel like a more elegant, polished version of myself. She knew right away how to accentuate my features but still have a natural look. The touch up kit made it easy for me to fix my lip color in between photos. For my hair, Shawna did an amazing updo that I never would have been able to do myself! I gave her some creative freedom with the hairstyle and was so happy with the result. An updo is not easy with my hair because it's very thick and heavy, but somehow it stayed in place all night through lots of hugs and dancing. The lash extensions were done a couple days prior to the wedding. She had a few different options ranging from natural-looking to more dramatic. I loved that I didn't worry about sweating or crying off mascara or strip lashes during my wedding, and they looked beautiful! I was a lash newbie but Shawna gave me easy instructions on how to care for them. The process does take a couple hours if you're getting a full set, but it's absolutely worth it. I definitely recommend scheduling a trial if you can, to give you the opportunity to try different options ahead of time, show her inspiration photos, etc. It made me feel much better going into my wedding day knowing we already had an idea of the look I wanted. She offered some great suggestions on what I could do with my short hairstyle and which accessories to choose. She was punctual and arrived early to our hotel for our appointment. Rossie asked about my normal skin complexion so it would look its best. She completed my hair and makeup totally within the time we had scheduled. She is very friendly and pleasant to work with. I was very happy with how I looked- makeup was not heavy at all and great color choices for my skin tone and features. Her makeup products are very high quality... I started makeup at 7:30 am. By 9pm, after the entire wedding, nap and dinner, my makeup hadn't even smudged! My skin has a tendency to get dry within a few hours of being under makeup, but even at the end of the day, it still looked very fresh. She is knowledgeable about skin health and gave me great tips on making my skin look as healthy as possible for the wedding day. I do not usually wear makeup and loved the finished product. My husband on the other hand looked at me like I was a total stranger! The morning of the ceremony (which was VERY early in the morning) I asked her to lighten up the look so my husband could recognize me. She did a great job adjusting to my request. Usually I like to browse stores on my own but when it comes to makeup, I like assistance to ensure I am picking out products, especially colors, that work with my skin tone. When it comes to makeup, I'm a creature of habit, wearing very little and what I do wear, it's the same colors consistently. I like a no makeup makeup look! So usually when I stop in MAC, I am there to restock my regulars. But sometimes I give in to their offer to give me a makeover or try a different shade of my norms. Such was the case this day. The makeup artist showed me an eyeshadow that had more yellow undertones than pink to use on my eyelid. As subtle as it seems, it really made my eyes pop! I thanked the makeup artist, bought my refills plus this new eyeshadow color, and was happily in my way. Oh, and she signed me up for the rewards program which gave me 10% off my purchase, even better. I hired Kelli for my July 2022 wedding. Ultimately, I found her to be incredibly rigid, hard to…read morework with and unreasonable. I think she probably sees herself as a stealthy business woman, making sure to look out for her own best interests (which would be something I can appreciate). However, her inability to compromise or even communicate clearly when a resolution is needed are not the qualities of a good small business owner. What's really frustrating though, is that after all her shortcomings on the business side of things, she absolutely does not make up for it in the realm of talent. When I initially experienced how cold Kelli can be in her emails, I thought "well, if she communicates this poorly but still has good reviews, she must be REALLY good at what she does." No. I will leave it at that--the answer is no. I thought about writing out all the details of my experience with Kelli, but then this review would be way too long. I will just say that by the end of my interactions with her I had given up. Every email she sent left me feeling more upset than the last, and I didn't want that kind of energy leading up to my wedding. Rather than seeking a fair resolution or any of my money back I chose to just pay her the remaining balance owed, take the services she was willing to give me, and then never talk to her again. To you, Kelli: I get that you deal with a lot of weddings and contracts all the time. But for me, this was my wedding. It was a very special day for me. And I wanted to be able to talk to you, as a real person and as the artist that you claim to be. Instead, I got a cold robot who quoted the contract at me every time I tried to have an open conversation about what I needed. It made me feel like we were at odds instead of being on the same team. There is a difference between being direct and being abrasive. You can be direct and still be friendly. In the end, when I told you I was upset and why, the attempt you made at having a warm, positive tone came across as insincere and condescending. Also, the fact that you didn't even check your own contract before mis-quoting it at me repeatedly added a whole new layer of confusion to our already frustrating communications. UPDATE: A day or two after I posted this review Kelli emailed me reminding me of a clause in my contract regarding reviews and asking me to take this review down. (Everything else that was said in her long email just solidly reinforced my previous experience of her.) I was aware of the clause and am not in breach of it, so will not be removing my review. It makes you wonder though, if there have been other poor reviews that went unposted due to that clause.
