This is one of my favorite wine stores in the UWS. It is the perfect size; they have a great selection of wines. Sometimes going into large wine stores is overwhelming, and it makes it difficult to make a decision. But here I love that there is a smaller handpicked selection, and each wine has a description, and ideas of what to pair the wines with. It makes picking out wine an enjoyable and fun experience. The staff are always eager to help you find a wine that best fits you. They also have pretty decent prices, especially for a more boutique style wine store in the UWS. The wine tastings here are also great! Several times I have come in with the intention to buy a particular wine or a particular type of wine and then after sampling the wine they have for tasting I pivot from my initial decision to whatever they are tasting. They also have a nice little selection of canned/bottled cocktails. Especially during the summer, stopping in to grab one or two of the aperol spitz single serving cocktails before heading the park, is a nice addition. In general, the store is nicely laid out and looks inviting, added to the pleasant experience of wine shopping! read more

I always get my wine here and I love it but sometimes they do things that irritate me. Like put me on hold and never pick back up, or like tonight where I called to get something delivered, they placed me on hold for 4 minutes, and when they answered again I inquired about delivery and he said "Sorry we stop delivering at 8:30". The time? 8:34 So that's why Pour gets 3 stars rather than a 5 it would have gotten from me. read more

I once wrote a bad review for this store but now I'm writing an updated good one having had a much better experience, and it's years later, I think it's only fair. Pour is the only wine store that I know of, in my neighborhood, especially during COVID, and now, that consistently has exquisite wine tastings on a daily basis. They offer a wonderful variety so that no matter what your palate, you should be happy. For instance, tonight I found the Cava at the tasting too dry, but enjoyed the Pinot Gris and the Cotes Du Rhone (which I bought). I love that they have individual cards which describe the wines in detail and where they come from. The person who gave the tasting was professional, informative and friendly - he didn't hard sell or push anyone to buy the wine which made me feel very welcome and wanting to buy the wine. One of the members of the staff helped me check out a Grenache which looked intriguing. Everyone was nice and the overall energy felt good. The store is a clean, sophisticated little store and they do have wines like the Grenache, which I need to check out, for $15.00 which seemed worth the price. My Cotes Du Rhone was more but, again, it made me smile so the price was worth it :) I might even give them a 5 star review next time. read more

Some math (because I'm Asian, and, you know, we like math): Bright, pretty store Friendly, knowledgeable staff + Diverse, organized selection ------------------------------------------------ = My favorite wine store What I really like about Pour is that they make the wine buying experience so easy and pleasant: they organize their wines into categories based on flavor and body (Crisp, Mellow, Plush, etc), they give you little cards and stickers with info about the wines, they keep track of what you buy in their system in case you're prone to forgetting what you've bought/liked, they give you points for each bottle you buy which you can use for discounts, and they pour tastes for you in actual wine glasses (classy and environmentally friendly!) instead of cheap disposable plastic goblets. They have a varied selection, too. Most wines are between $15-$25, but I've bought and loved a $9 Colombelle (a delicious citrusy & crisp French white) and I've thought seriously about getting a $110 Napa Cab from them (*sigh- maybe someday...). Hands down, my favorite place in the neighborhood to grab a quick bottle for dinner. read more

Pour is like an op-ed vs an encyclopedia of wine. They know what they like and that's what they stock. While the $10-$20 California Red lover in me felt a little hamstrung in my choices, their recommendation on a California Claret (first i've ever had) was fantastic. Great place if you've been entrusted or are expected to bring a bottle of wine and you don't know your Pinots from your Syrahs or you don't mind spending extra on a bottle for something new and unexpected. If you're into specific wineries or dead set on a $20 and under wine, you'll probably be leaving empty-handed. read more

Super friendly staff, incredibly easy to navigate shelves and a solid wine selection make Pour a great spot to find your next favorite wine in the UWS. I came here on a Friday night and it was busy but not too packed. They were doing a bourbon tasting though I was in a hurry and dint get to partake (though I plan to come back). I was looking for a red wine that was drinkable with pizza and general greasy eats and budget friendly. After perusing by mouth feel (crisp, velvety) I decided to go for one of Pour's affordable options in the back, all of which were $10. I settled on an Italian red that was delicious and was happy with my purchase - it's flavor profile was true to the description. I'll definitely be back - love that they describe the flavor in regular people terms, have pairing recommendations and overall are super helpful and not pushy staff. First I would like to address the mark up question: I really can't say there is a huge mark up - I did a search online and for the bottles I bought any place that was lower didn't actually have any in stock. Wine.com was within $0.50 either way. Second I wouldn't mind paying them and extra dollar or two. I walked in off the street just to check it out and the lady working was attentive. I wasn't in the mood to really talk wine so I told her I just wanted to look around and she immediately backed off and let me go about my business (I hate when they "leave you alone" by stepping back 2 feet and still talking to you). I picked out a couple of bottles that caught my eye and when I asked her about them she seemed knowledgeable and very friendly. I don't think it will be the only wine store I ever visit since it intentionally limits selection - but I do think i will go back several more times. read more

This is my alternative when I don't feel like hauling over to Broadway to hit up Best Cellars. It's equally informative, friendly and nicely edited. While you aren't getting a bargain, you are probably getting a better bottle of wine than you would at that random spot where you roll the dice and hope for the best. They also keep your name on file and remember your previous purchases. So when you space on the name of the last good merlot you bought there, they can pull up your info and you're out the door. Yes, the markup is higher than at bigger stores around town. But when you're seeking helpful pairing advice, or any wine/ food education, Pour excels. With Fairway or Zabar's groceries in hand, Pour completes the shopping with its wine pairing. The smart and fun wine staff really makes every customer feel special and gives their undivided attention to you. They're not just looking to make a buck (like other stores run on commission and guide sales people to upsell and other dirty sales tricks). They actually care about your selection and give you their best recommendations according to your tastes, preferences and dinner (or any other meal) plans. Let me say, though, that it is not necessary to come in here with a recipe or an idea of what you'll be eating. They can also recommend a great bottle of wine for drinking. Period. I haven't been to their classes, but they sound informative and I'm sure anyone will walk out with some new knowledge. Pour is the "cheers" of Upper West Side wine stores where everybody knows your name, or so it seems. read more

I've been to more wine shops on the UWS than I can remember. While I have had nothing but pleasant experiences at all of them, Pour is the crowd standout. They always have wines available to taste, and offer discounts if you choose to purchase one of the featured bottles. Every time I walk in, someone says hello and asks if they can help me. They are always enthusiastic and friendly, and it's apparent that they love wine, know a lot about it, and love their job. They've never steered me wrong when I've asked for a recommendation, and I love that they place cards, specifically for you to take with you, in front of each displayed bottle with a description, comparison, and food pairing suggestion. Beyond that, they put a sticker on every bottle that summarizes the card, so you always have a great guide. They have a great customer loyalty program as well. Pour is a brilliant store with exceptional staff. Buying wine there is a superb consumer experience. I was walking past last night with a buddy, takeout, and beer. I had really wanted wine instead of beer but the place near me was closed. We strolled in. First, they have a gazillion wines under $20 - I love it. The best model for a wine store. Sell affordable wines often. I can't be the exception by saying I just want a cheap bottle of wine with my Sunday night hummus, or Tuesday tacos or whatever. Second, the staff are helpful, knowledgeable, and unpretentious. These guys knew their inventory cold and found a bottle that was a perfect pairing for the takeout, not to mention a great bottle of wine. Lastly, I live in SF but will come to Pour from now on when I visit, just in the same vein as I always do Zabar's and Fairway. read more

Really fun wine shop. The set-up makes for a delightful shopping experience. Staff is very nice. There is a very limited selection of wines, but all interesting wines (the most important factor if you aren't going to be a warehouse type shop imo). Almost the whole shop is in the "everyday wine" price range. Instead of having a sections broken down by geography or varietal, it is broken into categories of Bubbly, Crisp, Mellow, Plush, Bright, Velvety, Bold or Sweet, this makes it incredibly easy. All the pertinent information answering the most common questions is right on the bottle. Pour is a great neighborhood vintner, the kind that make you want to open a shop yourself. You could walk in any day and get a great bottle that has all the characteristics you wanted, yet is a wine you most likely never had or aren't finding in all the other local shops. read more

I find myself coming back to Pour again and again. They have a great selection that runs the gamut of price and taste, so I can always find something that fits my needs. They also have a small but distinct option of hard liquor that's always fun/tasty/unique, and there's always some kind of tasting happening, so you get a little taste of something new each time you step in the store. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful, and if you get plugged into their rewards program you get perks after a certain number of purchases, and they will always keep your purchase history on file in case you want to reorder something but have forgotten the name. The bottles are marked up a few bucks more than beacon but the value is they organize the wine at Pour by the pairing of food you want to have the wine with. Also, they remember what wine you bought, which is a pretty good idea. I loved the idea of this place. Everything was laid out nicely and there were easy to understand signs guiding me to the right place. I got a great suggestion for a $10 bottle after I picked out my initial $25 dollar bottle. The space is narrow, and a tasting was set up (industry, not for customers) so it made it hard to maneuver around the back. But I do like the look of this place very much. However, I didn't end up actually purchasing those bottles because the computer was being wonky and apparently that's a pretty regular happening. I don't really use cash so I left my beautiful bottles on the counter. I think I'll be back the next time I'm uptown. read more

It was Christmas Eve night: I needed a bottle of wine to take to friends' and they were open. I was grateful for their just being open really. I know nothing about wine, so I welcomed the help of the friendly and knowledgeable staff -- I wanted red, cheap, and fruity. They pointed a few options out to me and gave me their $.02 without trying to get me to spend more. I also liked that there were wine-for-dummies type info cards next to bottles. It's a small store, which means the selection's not crazy, but that's good for me, because I know nothing of wine and tend to get overwhelmed by rows and rows of bottles that just turn into a blur. read more

This is hands-down my favorite wine store in New York City -- while there are multiple wine stores closer to me, I make a concerted effort to walk up here to shop. First of all, the way they organize wine by taste is such a smart yet unusual approach, I don't know why other stores haven't thought of it. Second, the service is always impeccable, with great suggestions from knowledgeable employees who clearly enjoy food and wine. This is one of my favorite stores in NYC. The staff here is friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging. On top of it, you can tell that they are passionate about wine and their work. They have been consistently this way and every time I've introduced friends to the store, Pour has more than made me look good. I would definitely not compare this to a local liquor store or even the wine aisle of a super market. There is an interactive element which is both the charm and differentiating factor of this place. You can ask all sorts of questions and the staff will help you narrow down the choices. There's never a sense that they drive you towards buying expensive wines. There have been times when I wanted to set up a party and the first question they asked was my budget. The other differentiating factors of the store include free delivery service for purchases over 3 bottles, wine storage (for the space challenged NYC apartments), and thoughtful tastings and food pairing events. Often they would do pairings with food from local restaurants so the locals can easily recreate it. And finally, their digital newsletter is well done, never intrusive and fun to read for people who enjoy wine and the community. I'm not sure about the comments on the markup. There are discounts for bulk purchases and a free frequent buyer card. I received a free bottle for a purchase of 12 bottles and last week, when I tried to redeem it on a $14 bottle, the staff reminded me that it's worth $20 and suggested I pick a pricier bottle. Again, this demonstrated to me that people here care about building a relationship with the clientele and the community, and not putting making a profit ahead of everything. I highly recommend this place as a wine store where you can experience people and the local community, and not simply a place to restock your liquor cabinet. I can't imagine a better way to reward a place with such heart and character than to enjoy a nice bottle of grapes. read more

I was given a bottle of wine I was allergic to (allergic to an amino acid in Cabernet). I love exploring new retail experiences, so I was excited to go into Pour. I asked the store if I could exchange the bottle. Still in perfect package & sealed. The manager said it was 'against the law'. It's the same concept as Best Cellars, with (mostly) inexpensive bottles grouped by flavor profile. However, the prices are inflated, $20 for a bottle of Mas de Gourgonnier is about $6 too high, and I don't love the $15 Rioja I bought to go with an antipasto platter because I didn't see anything Italian in the store and certainly did not find the reasonably priced Chianti I was looking for. read more

Went in there and staff sold us a bottle of Cab ~$20. Brought it back home and it was "corked" which was disappointing and we suspected these were the inventory they wanted to get rid of and hence sold us hard on the ones that were going bad. We were disappointed not to get to drink wine that night, we called and of course there would be no refund and we had to hike all the way back to UWS to exchange for another bottle (we're not from around the area). Went back and exchanged for the same bottle and staff assured us this bottle would be good to drink. We asked if they could open it for us in the store just to make sure it can in fact be opened. They told us they're not legally allowed to do so. So brought it home again a second time and OF COURSE it was "corked" AGAIN!!! This time we knew for sure this was a bad batch and they just wanted to get rid of the inventory to unsuspected customers. Needless to say, we were beyond annoyed and had to hike back to UWS a second time just to get a bottle of wine opened. Went back again and brought a cork opener with us and the staff uncorked the bottle halfway (so no illegal deeds here) for us to ensure that it was not "corked" a third time. They placed the blame on the supplier and said will follow up with them. No compensation were offered, no apologies, just seems like it's totally normal that their wine were BAD!!! HUGE WASTE OF OUR TIME! DO NOT RECOMMEND AND WILL NOT RETURN! They just gained themselves a scathing review and lost a valuable customer. read more

Great place to buy your next bottles of wine either for a party or your own at home pleasure. What's unique about this place is that they stock their store by food pairing. Makes it easy to quickly find your drinking pleasure quickly. Their management and staff are very well informed as well. They also have occasional events to make tastings fun and experimental. Full disclosure. I came to the store, for the first time, because a friend asked me to. It's out of the way for me, and required a bit of a haul. I am glad I did. I know a bit about wine, mostly California, and walked out with French, Italian and California wine, and an education. For those of us who are "old school" and used to "red/white," and geography, and varietals, this will take some getting used to. It's worth it. The folks know what they're doing, they're passionate about it, and they take the time. I wasn't able to carry a case out with me, so they shipped it. I got it the next day. I'll be back.
