THEY IMPROPERLY STORE THEIR WINE, SO BOTTLES MAY BE MOLDY AND THEY REFUSE RETURNS-- I purchased a $20 bottle here on the evening of 4/7/23. I opened the bottle immediately after purchase and the inside of the cork had mold all over it. So, I went back to the store that same evening (10min later), figuring it would be a quick exchange or refund. However, a man who identified himself only as the "manager" flat out refused to consider any idea that the cork was moldy, or any sort of exchange or refund. I even showed the cork to another customer in front of the manager, as a sanity check, and the other customer agreed the "white fuzz" over the inside of the cork was mold. Instead, the "manager" was extremely rude and highly aggressive. He continued to try to gaslight me into thinking it is "normal" for wine corks to have white fuzz on the inside and then proceeded to ask me why I opened it if it was moldy (which, of course, I wouldn't have known because it was on the INSIDE of the cork and wine bottles are opaque). Anyways, I ended up thanking him for his time and telling him I would no longer shop here. If you are the owner of this business, please consider adjusting your staff and business policies because you are losing business. Instead of exchanging a $20 bottle of wine, you have now lost my $100's of business every quarter. read more

I've never been to a wine store where every bottle is overpriced. I use the Vivino app' to compare prices when I shop for wine. At this store prices are marked up at least 20% above the standard rate. read more

I like West End Wine & Spirits because there is a very friendly and welcoming man who works there who is always willing to answer questions. I can always find what I need there and it's close to where I live in Lincoln Square. They don't have mixers for spirits if that's what you're looking for, but if you need that you can head to Morton Williams if you're going north or Western Beef if you're heading south (both are close) read more

Small shop, but great selection. Prices are fairly reasonable considering they have a built in clientele with all the large buildings nearby. The workers are always friendly and cheerful. They seem to remember their customers, which is nice. The wine tastings on Friday night are really fun with no pressure to buy anything. Though we've definitely bought and enjoyed new wines as a result of the tastings. Overall we're really happy to call this our local wine shop. read more

This review is based on their single malt whisky selection. Apart from the usual single malts, of which they have the name brands like Macallen, Glenlivet, etc. They had an Indian brand, Amrut which is unusual. I haven't tried it, but it's good to know that West End Wine & Spirits carries it. I spoke to one of the staff about Japanese whisky and he said that he was on the waitlist to carry one of Suntory's brands (not Yamazki). He didn't remember the name, but by my estimation it'll be either Hibiki or Hakushu which are the other major brands for Suntory. If they get one of those two, I'll def be back to snag a bottle. Pricing is a little on the high end here, so even if they're close by, I'd still go to Beacon to get the common scottish whiskys since their prices are a good $5 cheaper. I hope they continue to stock up on more single malts, but as of now their selection is somewhat limited and generic. read more

I've only been here once, but I plan to start making this my go-to wine shop. The store is clean, bright, well organized, and easy to navigate. It's a very small space but you don't feel that when standing inside. The workers are super nice and friendly -- when I picked out my wine, one of them said to me, "You look like you know a lot about wine!" Its the closest wine/liquor shop to my apartment, so I kind of want to give it four stars. Its like a closet, but they try to get as much as they can in there. I've never asked for help with anything, but they're very polite and always hold the door (no, really, there's a guy who just stands at the door to open it for customers). tl;dr: guy thought my ID was fake. Went to get social security card, birth cert and old drivers license and he still thought it was fake. Just wanted champagne for my anniversary. I have lived around the corner from this liquor store for over a year and a half and have no issues whatsoever. The prices are little high compared to other stores up the street, but for convenience sake I go here. Today I tried to buy a bottle of champagne for me and my girlfriends 1 year anniversary. I go down to the store, browse the selection, make my choice and approach the cashier. Zach, or at least thats what he told me his name was, took my New Jersey drivers license and carefully examined it. Im not even sure if he verified the birthdate but he said he couldnt accept it because he thought it was a fake. I recently came back from a trip to Utah and the TSA accepted the same drivers license so this guy must have been really fishing for something. I told him I had no other form of ID on me, but told him that I could verify the name on the card with a credit card or my business card. Still wouldnt agree. I asked to speak to his manager and Zach said that he could verify my ID. I told him I wanted him to come over and then Zach responds with "actually hes not here." Just to make a point and because it was extremely frustrating for me, I went up to my apartment and got my birth certificate, social security card, and old drivers license from another state to verify I am who I say I am. When I approached him with my selection and battery of identification, he still was hesitant to take it and thought I was faking. I asked him, why would I forge an official birth certificate or social security card just for a bottle of champagne. It wasnt until I started to raise my voice a bit that his coworker who was stocking shelves finally chimed and told him to accept my money. Im almost 29, definitely do not look under 21, and have been a customer of this store since I moved into my apartment. This was honestly the most scrutiny I have ever gone under to prove my age of birth, even more than trying to get TSA precheck or to apply for background checks. West End Wine and Spirit management needs to speak to Zack and explain to him what an appropriate ID is. Perhaps even re-think their employment relationship with hi,. If he thinks and ID is fake after looking at it, invest in a scanner to check it against some sort of system. I am extremely disappointed this store. read more

Not sure who the guy is that says best wine selection in town.... must be an employee... The place is new small but nice. Selection of spirits is limited but they have the basics. I didn't have a cold white wine Saturday evening (6:00pm) so I rushed down to get a bottle and use the quick cooler they advertise. Turns out it wasn't turned on and it would take 40 minutes to get going! I said what good is it to have one and not turn it on - he said when its cool outside (it was low 70s) they don't turn it on! I told him to keep the bottle I could cool my own in less time than that and told them they are going to lose business this way. He just shrugged his shoulders and didn't seem to care. Not a good way for a new business to build clientele. But it is s convenient I'll go back sometimes. read more

But seriously, having a place like this in my neighborhood is really clutch. I'm normally accustomed to cheap liquor stores that don't offer a wide variety of selections. Even worse, the service at those places can be non-helpful and even pushy at times. That's not the case at all with West End Wine & Spirits. Great service, great selections, and great hours - can't get any better than that. Never really was a loyal wine shop customer - but the staff here is very helpful and gives excellent recommendations. They hold the door open as you walk in and when you leave and assist you the entire time. The selection is pretty big and they have a variety of price ranges to help narrow your selection - usually I get overwhelmed, but they made it very easy :) I know I will go back! read more

Have always had great experiences in this store, the staff has always been so helpful. Until I walked in mid-pandemic and was asked to REMOVE MY MASK inside of the store in order to show my face to verify my ID photo. I have walked into this store many times before during the Covid-19 pandemic and was always asked to show my ID but have NEVER been asked to remove my mask. This would be a violation of New York State guidelines to remove my mask inside of an enclosed public place less than 6 feet away from someone. Understanding it is difficult to verify someone's ID photo when they are wearing a mask, I offered to show every credit card along with my student ID in order to verify my identity. I find it extremely unprofessional that despite offering these things, I was still met with hostility. I have done consistent grocery shopping during the Covid-19 pandemic, have showed my ID plenty of times while doing so, and have NEVER been asked to remove my mask. Even before traveling on a flight and going through TSA I was not asked to remove my mask to verify my ID photo. I do not recommend shopping at West End Wine & Spirit's unless you are willing to expose yourself to Covid-19 and at least 3 employees and customers. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. read more

Definitely a helpful staff who know a good amount about their selections. They don't have the best wine selection in town, but there are plenty of drinkable options. One of the coolest features is the blast chiller they have where you can blast freeze any bottle to perfection in just five minutes.
