This store is one of two branches in the Manchester Arndale, I find it to be the nicer branch out of the two after an awful experience mainly with the service at the other branch opposite Aldi and Specsavers, this branch Is located as you walk into the Shopping Centre with the entrance on Shudehill, opposite the Printworks. The service is okay, most aspects of the store including quantity of seating and beverages stocked is okay, perhaps on an average level but this place isn't outstanding, it doesn't stand out, nor does it offer anything gluten free hence I feel this store is worthy of a two star rating, despite it being the better branch of Greggs in Manchester city centre, I really don't think it deserves a higher rating simply for being the better branch as frankly it doesn't deserve it yet, I'm sorry to report.

This particular Galloways outlet is located in the historic Wiend, close to the train station, the church, the Face of Wigan, and the shopping centre. Their chicken and sweetcorn pastry is a work of art: tasty, well-baked, not too flaky, and hot in just the right way! And Venice fingers somehow restored in me the faith in British cakes and bakery. If I could, I'd try every single cake there, but I had to limit myself to this Italianate piece of confectionery. Highly recommended!

As a southerner, I had to be introduced to 'proper' pies by the boyf (who is from Wigan, hence the change of scenery from Manchester) and Galloways is our traditional pit stop before or after getting the train in or out of Wigan Wallgate. The ladies here are always lovely and the food is always hot. Now, I say this because Gregg's, your high street version of these smaller bakeries, often serves me up cold sausage rolls and lacklustre pasties which leave me feeling, quite honestly, a bit sad. Galloways pies always fill me up and leave me feeling warm inside, as if I become more northern with every bite. I have always gone for the meat&potato here, which I am assured is the most Wigan option, in order to hide the fact I am obviously not from round 'ere. I liked pies before I went to Wigan, but now I love them, and make sure to have one from Galloways every time I go. Healthy lifestyle, me? Of course. A small review for a small place, but nonetheless a place to go and refuel if anyone happens to venture into Wigan.

Especially when their goods are generally pretty tasty and of a higher quality than here. Their selection of savouries and sweets are pretty impressive and rival the other local bakers in the area, but with Greggs and the excellent Greenhalghs just down the way from them, I'd say that Pound Bakery is a place you should go if you literally only have a pound to spend for your dinner. But then again, you can't get a drink. Or some sort of accompaniment, which we all know is imperative to your lunchtime snack.

The store that caught my attention was the Stretford Mall shop, and I decided to go there since 2 pasties for £1 seemed very reasonable. Greggs are usually £1.85 for 2 pasties, so it at least 85% cheaper than it's rival. The selection of pasties seemed very impressive, better than greggs. And 2 loafs for £1 seemed another great steal. Hot drinks are 50p each and cakes are £1, again great value all rounded to a pound or less. Overall great value for money, good selection and quality that doesn't seem to differ with greggs. It caters for everyone, not just those on a budget, like it very much!

You wouldn't be too far off because although all the pies and pasties seem to cost 80p each they're all two for a pound! On my first visit I opted for a couple of chilli beef pasties which were very nice, spicy enough to give a bit of a kick without being overpowering and also with plenty of kidney beans mixed in the filling. Unfortunately on my second visit they didn't have chilli pasties and the two I ended up with, I can't remember the filling, were nowhere near as nice with too much pastry and too little filling. I have also tried their carrot cake which was nice and good value for money. All in all it's ok food at a great price, although if it hadn't been for the twofer offer I wouldn't have bought two so they're maybe guilty of encouraging obesity with their pricing structure.

The shop is fairly large with a decent window display of many mouthwatering cakes etc. Inside you can buy pretty much what you'd expect from hot sausage rolls and pasties to cakes and cookies as well as sandwiches and drinks. The staff are always friendly and willing and there is a general relaxed atmosphere even when it's heaving with customers. The products themselves are extremely tasty if not a little more expensive then it's competitors Greggs.

I always found the cups of tea to be a bit tastier in Greenhalgh's. Maybe because they don't taste quite as corporate. I imagine that one day Gregg's will actually take over the whole world by brain-washing everyone with their pasties and the limp tasting cups of tea of just the start of it. Anyways, Greenhalgh's is better for tea. Greenhalgh's have lots of hot baked goods just like Gregg's but they also have a good selection of cakes and biscuits and stuff, unlike Gregg's. This week in Pie News:…read more Pudding & Pie is a Kirkham-based business that I came across months ago in Preston station where they had a stall. I spend a great deal of time in stations across the North and Midlands which means I eat terribly because, as delicious as McCoys are, a packet of crisps is not a meal. I was therefore extremely excited to buy a good quality jumbo sausage roll from these guys and have looked out for them ever since, only to be disappointed. Last Friday however I was delighted to see the pies, brownies and sausage rolls on show and it turns out they are at Preston station just the last Thursday and Friday of every month, so I guess I'll have to try and get cases there on those days from now on! I would highly recommend the pies, I tried a spicy sweet potato one that was delicious and the cheese and black pudding was excellent too. They do have all the classic variations as well, but great to see more inventive choices. As previously experienced, the sausage roll is also good. PIES.

Located in the somewhat outdated Chorlton Place precinct, a couple of doors down from another…read morebakery, across the road from Greggs and near several tasty delis and supermarkets, it's a wonder that Hampson's survives. I went into Chorlton this lunchtime with the aim of doing a large and healthy food shop, but then realised how starving I actually was. I have had bad experiences shopping on an empty stomach, so decided I'd pop into the nearest shop for a quick bite to eat... at least I thought it'd be quick! It was 4pm (I had had a late breakfast!) so understandably they had run out of everything savoury except from cheese and onion pasties and veggie sausage rolls. Luckily I'm a vegetarian and decided in a split second that I'd have the pasty. I was the only customer in there and there was one member of staff mopping the shop floor. She'd obviously seen me, but carried on mopping as if I wasn't there. After a couple of minutes her colleague appeared from behind the counter just as she had decided to put the mop down and serve me. Without a hello, goodbye or thank you I handed over my pound and picked up my pasty from the counter. At least it was warm and filling.
