Located in the somewhat outdated Chorlton Place precinct, a couple of doors down from another bakery, across the road from Greggs and near several tasty delis and supermarkets, it's a wonder that Hampson's survives.
I went into Chorlton this lunchtime with the aim of doing a large and healthy food shop, but then realised how starving I actually was. I have had bad experiences shopping on an empty stomach, so decided I'd pop into the nearest shop for a quick bite to eat... at least I thought it'd be quick!
It was 4pm (I had had a late breakfast!) so understandably they had run out of everything savoury except from cheese and onion pasties and veggie sausage rolls. Luckily I'm a vegetarian and decided in a split second that I'd have the pasty. I was the only customer in there and there was one member of staff mopping the shop floor. She'd obviously seen me, but carried on mopping as if I wasn't there. After a couple of minutes her colleague appeared from behind the counter just as she had decided to put the mop down and serve me. Without a hello, goodbye or thank you I handed over my pound and picked up my pasty from the counter. At least it was warm and filling. read more
