My boyfriend has lived in Potters Bar most of his life and we decided to try the new pancake shop. We saw on their website that they were open from 10-midnight, but when we got there at 10:30, everything was black inside and the door had a printed out sign saying Monday-Friday Midday-Midnight. Even the banner out front claims "7 days a week 10-midnight" Thankfully we had some errands to run.
We went in and were told to sit at a specific table near the door even though the whole place was open, although we would have preferred a booth or the bar. Then we were served by an awkward waiter who paid more attention to my bust than to our order.
The service in general was absolutely appalling. We sat for a solid 15 minutes waiting for our check while three staff members, including the female manager, an angry looking tall blonde woman in her mid-50s, stood around and seemed to argue about another table which the bill had been messed up on. Then, the male manager/owner sat down at the bar and made several calls on his phone, intervened in the women's argument, ordered food and stopped our waiter, who had been missing for at least 10 minutes and made him serve him while we sat there completely gobsmacked, still waiting, blatantly with our arms folded and jaws open.
I had ordered the Potty Crepe Omelet, with mushrooms, tomato and cheese. What I got was a cold crepe filled with bad shredded cheese, a few(emphasis here on FEW....maybe 6 or 7 tiny pieces) of wilted and bruised mushrooms and cold, relatively blah tomatoes. The whole thing was literally filled with cheese that wasn't even more than slightly melted. And I assumed, perhaps foolishly, that the word "omelet" in the title meant it was made with eggs, like a breakfast burrito. Not a bit of egg to be found.
My boyfriend had the Breakfast @Lunch, which was your typical English breakfast served on top of a pancake, or so the menu claimed. It was really about half of what you get at the Cafe down the road. It included one egg, one sausage, two very small rashers of bacon, a single fried tomato and a spoonful of mushrooms. His opinion of the food..."appalling"
We went for the lunch special, so thankfully we ONLY paid a ridiculous £15 for the whole experience, about £5 more than it was worth. £7.50 was still far to much to ask for a cold crepe and a small glass of coke (normally priced £2.30 on the regular menu!!)
For a much better dining experience, I highly recommend Bistro The Walk , which is where we went immediately after for an absolutely divine dessert. www.bistrothewalk.co.uk for the menu and directions. read more
