Potsdamer Platz is one of those places you can't miss simply because it's in a fairly central area--if you are into cultural and artistic activities such as museums, memorials, concerts, shopping (like how I threw shopping in there ;) you'll probably catch transportation close by. You'll likely stumble upon this plaza if you're visiting and your hotel is near, or if you're walking between attractions, or simply commuting and transferring between different trains. It's maintained its role as a transit hub since the mid-1800s, when it was the location for a long distance train station. After WWI, Europe's first traffic light was installed at this intersection. The square was destroyed in WWII and subsequently became an area for black market activities where the purviews of the foreign powers coalesced, and further became a demarcation between East and West Berlin when the wall went up in 1961. The area was devoid of infrastructure development until the 1990's once the wall came down, followed by major corporations moving in, and new buildings and highrises going up expeditiously to accommodate the needs for commercialization. While I didn't see anything exciting happening in the area when I was there, other reviews mention a Christmas market and other holiday, performance and community events being staged here. Surrounding the square are a number of retailers including the Mall of Berlin, some restaurants, and a lot of office buildings. read more

Is this a must stop on your vacation? No. But this seems to be a good part of town with the hotels, mall, and stores in the area. We just so happen to be at a chain hotel in the area and this was our daily stomping ground for 7 day, 6 nights. You will find some pieces of the Berlin Wall on the line marking where The Wall was. There is a major metro stop which was great for getting to everything on our bucket list. They happen to have an Easter Market in the Plaza while we were visiting. read more

A visit to this place certainly shows how Berlin is a pretty modern city, though that really shouldn't surprise anybody all that much. Actually, something like thirty years ago this place didn't even exist, namely because there was a huge wall that happened to go through the middle, though this no longer is the case. These days it is basically a huge shopping mall and entertainment district that feels as modern as, well, pretty much anything. Mind you, while I wouldn't necessarily consider that it happens to be where everything is at, this certainly is one of those family places. read more

Hehe, one of the main touristy spots in Berlin but I was a tourist! I wonder if the locals were judging me like I sometimes judge people gawping at the lights at Piccadilly Circus No matter because there was a Christmas Market going on during my visit. The star attraction was the tallest ice slide in the city where they had built a tobaggon ramp and you could pay to zoom down on tyres. It looked fun but the queue was a little daunting The rest of the market had mainly food and beer stalls. As I booked dinner at the nearby Lorenz Adlon restaurant, I passed on the food but it looked like mainly fast food albeit of the German variety - sausages, potato, etc Fun to wander round with lots of neon at night read more

Potsdamer Platz is one of the most modern sight in Berlin. Which very few area have tall buildings in the city centre of Berlin. It is an important public square and traffic intersection. At the underground here, beside the U-Bahn station (metro), also trains from different cities will made a stop here before hit the main station. You can find many thing to do here. If you want to see something historical and cultural, Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag are not so far away. Tiergarten is also close by for those who like to see some greens. For shoppers, there are Akenda and Mall of Berlin around. When the weather isn't so nice, Cinestar and Cinemaxx is on the way. Neue Nationalgalerie, Gemäldegalerie and Berliner Philharmonie is fairly close. There still many other activities around, I let the rest for you to explore. If you need more help, you can find the info machine which located at the bus stop. An interesting fact, this place was totally laid waste during second World War and then left desolate during the Cold War when the Berlin Wall bisected its former location. After the Berlin Wall be push down, Potsdamer Platz has been the site of major redevelopment projects in Berlin. It became one of the modern sights in this city. If you are interested, you can also read it on the board at the square. For me, this is one of the sights I like very much in Berlin. Because of this place got always something on, I never felt bored from this. The skyscraper looked great as well. This is definitely a place to be. read more

A great place to walk in, shopping, finding restaurants or enjoying a coffe in one of it's many (high range price cafes), for me the downsides are: it's actually always more colder and the weather is more windy in this area i know some people would love this, but me not. also it's impossible to find a cafe with mid prices for a drink. this place has a special place in my heart and will always come here to visit it, despite the weird weather issues there :D read more

Potsdamer Platz is a slightly interesting and historic place in Berlin, it was totally laid to waste during the Second World War and desolated during the Cold War years as it was part of the Berlin Wall location, a very small memorial of the wall is located in the area, close to the train station and Vapiano. Since reunification of Berlin and Germany, this place has returned back to its' usual ways, with construction starting in the late 1990's. Potsdamer Platz is quite nice, there are multiple shops and malls nearby, including The Mall of Berlin as well as having a train station and metro station. Signposting around the square could be better, as this is also a huge tourist area due to things to do especially in terms of shopping and even eating, I wouldn't say Potsdamer Platz is a highly special place of Berlin, Berlin is a nice city and this Potsdamer Platz is just okay. Could Berlin do without it? Yes. Is it completely terrible? No. Due to the reasons discussed I feel a fair rating is a two-star rating for Potsdamer Platz . read more

Wow - glass and metal is the overwhelming impression I have of this place. It is full of huge buildings, huge roads, and space but sky is all you can see for the buildings. There are so many modern buildings, so many modern corporations, it feels soulless and yet impressive. Hard to describe beyond big, overwhelming, metal and glass. read more

Potadamer platz is one of the bigger platz in Berlin. There is a Starbucks, a nice park, a variety of shops and many historical sites. Stay away on the weekends as every tourist wants to take over the place. Bikes be galore and if you're missing the states, you can find many familiar places here and lots of English spoken. I actually don't really feel like I'm outside of the U.S. when I'm shopping here. read more

Come on, you gotta go here if you're visiting Berlin. It's the main place right in the heart of Berlin. I definitely agree with a previous review that it is like the Times Square of Berlin. It's very centrally located and insanely easy to get to by U-Bahn. You go through the exit, walk outside and oh, you're there. Of course it's best to view this at night so you can see all the lights. There is also the first electric traffic light here. It is still functioning, so it is very interesting to see a traffic light that is over 120 years old. It is a replica, as the original was removed in the 1930s and it is no longer used for traffic controlling purposes, but it is still interesting to see. It is also interesting to stand here and note the hustle and bustle, just as it had been 100 years prior. However, the area was totally deserted when the Berlin Wall was erected, because the wall divided the area in two. One cannot even notice the effect of that these days. Finally, another interesting thing to see while here is one you cannot miss: the entrance to the train station. It is huge and very gorgeous. From there you can get to the Arkaden, or of course there are street-level entrances. read more

Super modern square to simply hang out, shop, grab an overpriced beer and chill. Found it to be very touristy and lame but I liked the purple and blue neon lights above. It completely lacks charm and reminds you that Berlin is simply a large modern city and not the quaint European city one might expect. But, you still would have a good time here. read more

It's a sight to see and especially at night, but don't go out of your way to visit. It is not the best metro sight to come out of because it is difficult to orient yourself as the area is so large, street signs far apart and streets wide and busy. read more

This place is the Times Square of Berlin. The Germans hate it and the Americans seem to love it.. Maybe it's the neon lights, the McDonalds and the big SONY building that makes them feel at home. I recommend checking this place out if you're in Berlin, but ONLY after dark so you can see the lights while standing in the middle of the sq. Very pretty. Also, if you staying east of the B'Gate it's a really nice walk back to the gate, past the Field of Stelea and down the Unter Den Linden and on past Bebelplatz (the most stunning memorial site IMO) to the Berliner Dom. A spectacular walk at night and there's plenty of light for the photographers out there. read more

Ya know... Potsdamer Platz is one of those places known across many nations... if you know anything about Berlin, you know that name. And yes, it was bombed flat in WWII and then a divided wasteland for much of the cold war... But. I was expecting more somehow. The Ubahn/Sbahn station boxes are OK, and the traffic pattern is sort of OK, and the walk of stars is pretty cool... But. The place lacks soul. Its just a big intersection with a few mementos of the past on placards. I was expecting it to be more people oriented, more personal. More retail. It is a cold and uninviting space. Cars rule the space more than the should. No trees. None. WTF? Why not have a small geen space in there somewhere? The adjoining Leipziger Platz could help there - but its not finished yet. The chunks of old Wall and the wall path are great - but overall, its just not really 'alive' the way it should be. Its too new, and it feels quite inauthentic. They let the architects run wild and ended up with a place for pictures of buildings, not a place for people to dally. Maybe in 50 years it will have a soul again... read more

Not a fan, some of the musicians were cool but don't expect to be awed. While in Berlin, we kept seeing this square as a primary stop while on the subway. We ventured off to see what the fuzz was about. There was nothing particular happening on this day, just locals and tourist hanging out. There was a big soccer game on this day so there were many people representing for their teams. It was dirty with some stores, can be skipped while in Berlin, unless something draws you here, avoid it. read more

I was quite impressed by Potsdamer Platz. It avoids the pitfalls of nostalgia by being almost entirely modern - too many urban renewal projects in post war Germany involved restoring city centres to their pre war condition. Potsdamer Platz, a wasteland from 1945 to 1989, was a blank slate and it's to the credit of the developers that they have been quite bold considering the stakes. I'm sure some of the buildings will not age well but equally others should stand the test of time. It wasn't hugely busy when I was there which was a pity but the station is huge and this area could be quite lively if it gets more popular. read more

Well done in city design! We stopped by during a festival of some sort (wine?) and purchased Currywurst at a booth. Otherwise, you feel like you are "in-the-city" with skyscrapers all around with shops as well. The plaza is a great place to people-watch, shop, drink, or even catch a subway train. read more

This is a pretty cool area. Definitely worth checking out, but there's not a ton to do here and the food is overpriced.

Depends upon what you want...large glass buildings, check...lots of people milling about, check...2 large movie houses, check...ice cream, check...large fake lawn to sit on and see rebar peeking through with giant locked down see-saws,check...nice restaurants or cafes, go somewhere else. read more

A decent Christmas market with the biggest attraction being an enormous sledding hill on an artificial ice surface. I found it enjoyable to watch the tubers come down. 1.50 Euro for a ride or buy a 4 pack for 5 Euro. read more

Great to walk around, or better yet ride the beautiful tram. Get a currywurst and be the typical tourist. As the heart of Berlin it makes a good meeting spot, and last I was there they have pieces of the Berlin Wall on display in the street. read more

This has reasonably recently been re-developed. I first visited the Imax back in 1998 shortly after the opening. This is the film hub of Berlin. The Berlinale is hosted here and the surrounding sony centre is amazing. The cinema screens films in their native language so you don't have to put up with dubbed crazy voices which never seem to quite match. Around the area are numerous restaurants and shops (the most entertaining being corrorobori - the Australian restaurant - why?? Crocodile steaks and Kangaroo meat all washed down with a Fosters- that no true Australian really drinks- Sigh!). All of these are priced for their touristy population. Walk out towards Friedrichstrasse for some slightly more sensible prices. Outside of Potsdamer Platz itself the Daimler Chrysler building has a viewing platform on the top - less waiting and cheaper than the television tower. Also keep an eye out for the famous old traffic light :-) read more
