Berliner Dom ist sehr groß und schön. We came here on our visit to Berlin. Walking from the Silent Library, on the Humboldt University campus, down Unter den Linden to the historical Cölln district of old Berlin. Given our family members who are clergy, we seem to visit churches wherever we go. But the Berliner Dom is special. It's to the former DDR credit that they allowed for its rebuilding in the 1950-60s. But for me, it's their music program and pipe organs that are most impressive. JS Bach also played here in the early 1700s and his sheet music was on display on our visit. See photos. read more

Beautiful and the biggest church in Berlin located on the museum island. It is very massive both outside and inside...you have to pay for entrance and you can climb to the top to see 360 degree view of Berlin, worth it but it's 267 steps each way..no bathroom so go before climbing. Somehow I was there and there was a mass in German an I stayed 1/2 way and it was lovely. I'm not a church person but do appreciate the service. The building, the decor, the history itself is worth to check it out for sure. There are plenty of crypts within the church so you can check them outs along with shop and café upon exiting. read more

This domed cathedral is the largest in Germany and as we see it today is one of many versions of this place of worship starting from the mid-15th century. Commissioned by Wilhelm II in 1888 the cathedral broke ground in 1894 over same location as a prior church building demolished the prior year to make room for this new and improved iteration. The design of this monumental structure incorporates details from Italian Renaissance and Baroque styles, notably ornamental mosaics, gold features and trimmings, and the layout of the building with its soaring dome and nave. Construction was completed in 1905, but after major damages during WWII was restored starting 1975 and only completed in 1993. Today it serves as functioning church parish for a German Protestant denomination. Visitors can access the following areas in the building: Preaching Church, Baptismal and Marriage Chapel and Panoramic View via 270 stairs. The crypt below the cathedral is a main attraction though closed for renovation until the end of 2025 or early 2026. Regular musical concerts are held here and programming can be found on their website. Normal visiting hours are Mon-Fri: 9am-6pm, Sat: 9am-5pm and Sun: 12-5pm. Check in advance for holiday hours. Tickets are €10 for adults, €7 with the Berlin Welcome Card, €7.50 reduced (students, disabled, see their website for full list). A single adult can bring up to 3 children in the ticket price. Prices go toward church upkeep which their website lists as €15K per day. Purchases can be made in person or line by credit card only, cash not accepted. Beautiful cathedral! Also great views from the top of it. The climb is a bit challenging because of the steepness at the end and if you're fatigued from walking around all day, but definitely worth it. I think the view might be better than the top of the Reichstag. The price to get in I thought was a bit expensive for what it is, especially because the cathedrals we've visited in Germany have all been free, but definitely worth a visit. The whole area around the cathedral is really beautiful. read more

Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom), built between 1894 - 1905, is the most famous building in Berlin. It was once a royal church, and its interior is in beautiful Baroque style. It housed the coffins of Friedrich I and III, as well as more than 100 other coffins of nobles. It's worth to mention that the brochure to describe the cathedral is very concise and clear, one of the best I have ever seen so far, I was able to literally follow it to browse through the cathedral. The ticket is 10 euros to climb to the top of the tower, and you have to climb 270 steps. At top of the dome the spectacular overlook of entire Berlin is rewarding. At the exit, there is a small coffee shop Dom Cafe, sit by the Spree River for a while, drink a cup of coffee and eat a snack, which is a reward to yourself. read more

I will defer you to YouTube or historical reading about this dome. What I want to rate is my experience while visiting this site. Very beautiful from the outside - already within the museum island vicinity. Once you pay €10 per person, then you may go inside to pray and take photos I guess. I wonder if they still hold masses here... but when they do, do mass goers still need to buy a ticket? Oh well! Inside is very pretty, dome design is pretty. The altar is pretty, depicting the birth of Jesus, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. Then on the 4 dome corners were the writers of the 4 gospels. On each side are the (creepy) sarcophagus - I am entitled to my feelings - but they are beautiful and ancient! So that was cool. Then there's an invitation to do the panoramic walk on the dome rooftop, with 267 stairs steps - one way! I did not take the photo of the direction, but because of peer pressure, I did it and turned on my indoor walking mode in my apple watch. Boy oh boy was I reminded how out of shape I am (yes, still present tense). The first few staircases were normal until it got narrower and narrower and steeper. So... if you are claustrophobic, or have any heart condition or any health condition at all that straining yourself is bad then please dont do it! This is my reason for being on earth - to spread this news (no pun intended on this being a church haha)! I spiked a 150bpm on my heart rate monitor! No wonder i was not giddy. And the fact that it rained made it worse! I was catching my breath and I couldnt feel my legs after Overall, pricey ticket to pay for my indulgence, come-to-Jesus awakening on my health, and lovely place to visit if you like beautiful churches and grand and ancient sarcophaguses. read more

The stairs to the top offer amazing views of the city. I am a 45 year old male in decent shape and was able to easily handle the stairs. This is a working church, you can see a mass here. On a side note they have a GREAT indoor and outdoor cafe. The outdoor cafe had reasonable prices and you sit right next to the river. Absolutely breathtaking. If you're in Berlin, a visit to this beautiful cathedral is a must. I recommend taking a seat in the pews and just taking everything in. If you're game, a trip up 270 steps will be well worth your time for the panoramic views of Berlin's gorgeous landscape. While they are not currently open, they do hold sermons on the important days with very limited seating to try to maintain social distancing. They are currently asking for donations for maintenance fees that are usually paid through revenue generated by visitors. When it was open, the Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) entrance fee was 7€. I do not know if this will change, but hopefully not. It isn't a museum itself, so city museum passes you could use for the rest of Museum Island won't work. However, if you want some history and artifacts of the Cathedral, there is a small museum upstairs. Big bags aren't allowed in there, so you'll have to check it into the storage/locker room that's kind of across from the visitor's entrance. The automated lockers will cost you a few euros and are limited, with a few different sizes to accommodate everything from backpacks to luggage. Besides attractions in the cathedral, there is the Dom Café set up outside one of the cathedral's side exit. I specifically remember wandering out and up a staircase behind the café cart after seeing the crypts. It's just off the side of the building and a kind of portable, outdoor thing where they set up chairs and tables and you can get drinks from the little, sleek cart that has "Dom Café" labeled across the front panel. I would have loved to sit down and people-watch there if we had the time. One of the main attractions is the climb up to the cathedral's dome, which is around 350-ish(?) steps (STEPS, not necessarily stairs, or at least according to the signs). It's not a straight-up continuous walk, and you'll get a chance to see both inside and outside of the cathedral from the hallways you'll walk through in between staircases. Would definitely recommend because you get a closer look at that glorious dome ceiling. The lower staircases are modern, but they get narrower and older as you ascend, so watch yourself because we had someone bang their knee climbing up. Once you get to that relatively roomy outside walkway, you'll get a close look at all the statues, but they also have barred windows facing inwards so you can look inside as well as over the city. Berlin Cathedral is a historic and religious site as an active parish located on Museum Island. It's technically been around since the 15th century, though the building itself is a lot younger. The art of the place is breathtaking. Having run up the stairs and take shelter under the overhang during a rainy day, I thought the mosaics overhead was just gorgeous. I also was really excited about the Hohenzollern crypt. That is just the entirety dynasty of royals who changed so much of the face of Europe. Overall, this place took my breath away in multiple aspects, so I definitely recommend visiting when things are back to normal. read more

A must-see on your trip to Berlin! The history behind this Cathedral is quite interesting. The artwork inside is beautiful, as well as what went into protecting, preserving, and restoring things after WWII. The climb to the top is worth the stairs for the incredible view of the city from outside the dome. We easily spent a few hours here and could have spent more but we wanted to see other parts of the city. This is quite an impressive structure from the outside. The patinaed roof is beautiful. I'm still partial to the Dom in Cologne. This has a different and softer look than the Gothic Dom in Cologne. It's gorgeous from any and all sides of this edifice. It's clear how much detail and thought went into every minute detail of this Dom. I would find the church took distracting that I would rather be outside looking in every corner of this Dom than to be inside. I was so awe struck by the beauty of the outside that during my visit I never made it inside at all. read more

Berliner Dom - to last so many circumstances that throws at the dome, is quite admirable. Lasting all the fires, society wants it to be the norm and all the perspectives that perceives this, is in awe. How did it persevere throughout history? I sat on a wooden bench in front of it with inspiration. No matter how many people have tried to influence it to an ordinary monument, it just didn't adhere to it. It was a modern museum designed / built like it was built a few centuries ago. Nevertheless, the architecture was beautiful. It was enjoyable to sit near the entrance taking-in the view of the open space in the center plaza that it faces. The line to get into the Cathedral was long - and the entry admission is not cheap at 7 Euros - considering all other cathedrals in Germany that I went to were free (except if you want to go the belt tower in some of the other cathedrals). Please note: the 1 day museum pass for all the museums on the island does not cover this cathedral admission (um... that is why they call the museum pass and not a cathedral pass). read more

I should be in awe at this place but I am not. When you live in Central Europe surrounded by old churches and history you get pickier as time goes on :-) I have always wanted to go in here and it was closed last two times I came by. It was also surprising that you had to pay €7 to get in. It's the first church in Germany I have paid to go in, it's highly unusual in this country. To be honest the outside of this church is far grander than the inside. Climbing up to the top of the dome is also nice and you get a good view of the city but the TV tower is better and you get unobstructed views. I am glad I saw it and I am probably being harsh with my ratings but it was nothing spectacular as far as old German churches go. read more

One of the most beautiful cathedrals/churches I've ever been to. Admission is so affordable, I believe I paid 6 Euros as a student. Westminster Abbey charges an insane amount of money to get in. Anyway, I cannot stress how beautiful this church is. The architecture is awesome. The colors used in the interior are very nice. The altar and everything behind it is gorgeous. And the organ is amazing. The ceiling is beautiful. There are restrooms downstairs as well as a little cafe. You are allowed to take pictures as long as you don't use flash. The walk up is a bit tiring but once you're up there yiu can walk around the dome and get a beautiful view of Berlin. I highly recommend this church to anyone visiting Berlin. read more

At night, the building was lit up in a rainbow of projected colors - to the finest detail on the facade - SO cool. And amazing to see how this building survived the war and then was fixed up. Although I didn't go inside the cathedral, the outside structure of it was just as amazing. I was astonished by how detailed the entire building was and was pretty disappointed that I didn't make it inside. So please take my word on it and go inside to check it out! The also have a huge lawn that opens up to the cathedral and a fountain so you're able to take some amazing pics. Behind the cathedral is actually a bridge and if you take pics of it from the back where you're on the bridge offers a great shot! Gorgeous. Inside and out this church is a must see. Large beautiful pipe organ with someone playing music the whole time we were there. We enjoyed the music very much while taking in the views inside the church. Everything is breathtaking but I love the ceiling the most!! If you are physically able I recommend walking to the top of the dome (tons of winding steps up!) Once you get to the top you will see some great views of the city. As you leave you walk through the crypt and of course a small gift shop. There is a large open park across the street that would be great for a picnic. read more

If you stay for any prolonged period of time in Berlin, it's likely you'll walk by this iconic, intricately framed cathedral many, many times. And what a beauty it is...especially during the Festival of Lights each October! It has survived the tests of time and is a city fixture. I wish I had gone inside. Maybe next time! Hands down the most beautiful church exterior! WOW! WHAT A BEAUTY! This church was formerly a Roman Catholic Cathedral but later the church moved their seat in Berlin to Saint Hedwig's Cathedral. This is now a United Protestant Church. I was so overwhelmed by how gorgeous it Berliner Dom is! It's intimidating! The exterior has such deep and intense colors and shading. The inside is stunning (even if you aren't the religious type :) ) *Tip* - Keep going up the stairs and through the doors until you reach the top of the dome where you will find an OUTDOOR walkway around the rotunda. You can't miss this majestic building when in Berlin. It's on Museum Island. It's pretty big and the copper dome signifies how important it is. This is a Protestant church. Look at the details on the statues. The inside is beautiful too. Look up at the ceiling. This is called the Berliner Dom after all. There's a large Sauer organ and you can purchase a CD if you like the sound from an organ. There are different parts to this place. The church, the dome walkway, the crypt and the museum. There's only one word that can be used to adequately describe Berliner Dom and that's spectacular. Outside, inside, down below in the crypt, upstairs in the dome itself - everything about Berlin Cathedral Church is magnificent. It's well worth the 7 Euro entrance fee to see such stunning Baroque architecture. On my visit, during October 2017, I was lucky enough to hear some live organ music being played which added to the grandeur and atmosphere. However be aware, because this is a fully functioning Church, there's no tourist entry during services or events. read more

I loved this place. You just pay to go in and view it and make sure you go upstairs and all the way to the top. The views are breathtaking inside and outside. I would go when its sunny because you can just get an amazing view. Also the lawn in front of the Dom is nice to just lay out at and have lunch so maybe bring a little lunch with you before you go in. read more
