This place is incredible. The architecture is stunning and it's hard to believe that it was only built in 1905. If you are able, take the stairs to the top of the Dom. But please note, it can get steep and if you get claustrophobic, this may not be for you. However, if you don't have issue, it is worth the climb. You will get a 360 degree view of the entire city. At 7€, some complain. For me, I thought it was a bargain. read more

We visited the Dom to see the crypts and the beautiful ceiling of the dome. A most impressive church (it is not a Cathedral) and one that stands out in the city. I remember well its neighbour, "Honickes Lamp Shop" which has now been pulled down. It is being replaced by a modern recreation of the Schloss Palace. On my first day in Berlin, I visited the Berliner Dom. What is it ? The Berlin Cathedral had never been a cathedral in the actual sense of that term since it has never been the seat of a bishop. The bishop of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg is based in St. Mary's Church in Berlin, and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. St. Hedwig's Cathedral serves as seat of Berlin's Roman Catholic Metropolitan bishop. When was it built ? The history of the Cathedral on Berlin's Spree Island began in 1465, when the St. Erasmus Chapel in the newly built royal palace of Cölln on the Spree was elevated to the stature of collegiate church. The German name for the Cathedral, "Dom", can be traced back to the term "Domkirche", which was used for such collegiate churches at that time. Did the Dome suffer WWII ? The most prominent damage to the Cathedral caused by an air raid in 1940 was the loss of the altar windows. In 1944, the impact of a liquid incendiary bomb struck the foot of the dome lantern. Because access to this location was so difficult, the fire could not be extinguished, and the entire dome construction was destroyed. Parts of the burning dome crashed into the church and through the floor, causing the fire to spread all the way into the crypt below. Within one night, the Cathedral had been transformed into a ruin. Vandalism and weathering caused further damage. Money for the necessary protection of the structural materials came slowly. The bells chimed again for the first time after the war's end in November of 1948, and a provisional roof for the Cathedral's dome was only built in 1953. During this period, services and church music took place in the crypt area beneath the memorial church. When was it finally reconstructed ? With financial support from the German Protestant Church and the government of the Federal Republic, reconstruction of the still war-damaged Cathedral began in 1975. The memorial church on the north side and the imperial underpass on the south side of the Cathedral were torn down. The restored Baptismal and Matrimonial Chapel has been back in use for services and events of the Cathedral congregation since 1980. Construction work on the exterior façade of the Cathedral - with extreme alterations in the dome area - was essentially complete in 1983. Work on the interior began in 1984. On June 6th, 1993, the Sermon Church was reopened in a ceremonial service. The windows in the chancel and the mosaic paintings in the dome of the sermon church were reconstructed in the years that followed. On June 29th, 2002, the last of the dome mosaics was festively unveiled. The restored Hohenzollern crypt has been open to the public since November 20th, 2002. Where is it ? The Berliner Dom is located between the Lustgarten and the river Spree. It is close to the Alexanderplatz. Anything else to add ? Definitely worth a visit, if only for the great view of the city from the dome. You'll have to climb a lot of stairs, and then some more stairs... but once you're up there, you'll enjoy the view even more! The entrance fee is around €10 I think, the museum card doesn't give you a reduction unfortunately ("it's not a museum"). Also, don't forget to visit the catacombs with the graves of ancient royals. read more

One of my favorite sights in Berlin. From the outside, it has a wonderful blank staining that gives it some character than just a clean church. The 7 Euro entrance fee can be a bit steep, but it's quite glorious inside. There's a second floor to see the church from a higher view. Be ready for some exercise if you want to go the roof. It's a wonderful view of Berlin and how spread out and large it is. read more

From the outside the Berliner Dom is spectacular! It was neat because they have a Dom museum inside with intricate model replicas of the Berliner Dom. Also you can walk up to the top part of the Dom but you can't see very much. I was a bit bummed having to pay 7 Euros to go inside, considering that for most cathedrals there was no fee :(. read more

This place was really interesting to go to, especially since we went during the festival of lights. The way the building was lit up added a lot of allure to it. I like seeing places at night a lot because the light and the shadows add a lot of depth and character to buildings. The Berliner Dom is a fancy cathedral on Museum Island. It's beautiful even just from the outside, with its striking greeny-blue dome. When you get inside it's even more ornate, with a very grand main area. I've not been to a lot of churches in the past and I'm not religious at all but it was breath-taking, historical and very over-the-top. Lots and lots to see and take in! In the bowels of the building lies the crypt. I actually didn't know about this until I was there but it ended up being the most interesting part of the Berliner Dom, to me. Rows and rows of ancient coffins for royalty and assorted dignitaries are lined up and you can spend a very long time viewing these. Some of the coffins are stunning and others are almost smashed to pieces, which is just as interesting in its own way. According to the website "It contains 94 entombments from the end of the 16th century until the beginning of the 20th century". Incredible. After this, we went up, up, up... all the way to the top of the Berliner Dom! It's extremely high and the walk up the small, narrow, staircase was quite a trek but it was well worth it in the end. You get to go outside, onto the edge of the building and get some incredible views of the city of Berlin. A word of warning: I'm quite scared of heights and this DID terrify me to a point... but I still recommend that you do it, you ultimately won't regret it. Overall this was a fantastic few hours with some spectacular sights. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this so much or that there would be such a variety of things to see. Having the cathedral itself, then the crypt, THEN the trip to the top of the dome saved this from being run-of-the-mill and made it something really special. Definitely check this out! read more

Already captivating from the outside, the Berliner Dom will have your undivided attention as soon as you walk through its doors. As you enter, your eyes will dart around the breathtaking interior and try to absorb the intricate details of the white marble altar and the stunning ceiling. Gold detailing is woven throughout the room, and grand sculptures tower above you. It's hard to imagine something more mesmerising! However impressed you are at this stage, it is the ascent up the 270 steps that will lead you to the cathedral's true highlight: At the top is a stunning view of the city that allows you to spot several famous Berlin landmarks such as the TV Tower, Museum Island and the River Spree among many others. Of course, what comes up must come down eventually. When going down again, make sure to visit the crypt. You will be greeted by an eerie cold as you meander through the sarcophagi of the Brandenburg-Prussian Royal Family, some of which date back five-hundred years. Most impressive, are the tombs of Frederick I and his queen, Sophie Charlotte, which lie grandly amongst the tombs of their children and grandchildren. The Berliner Dom is an experience not to be missed whilst in the city however, be sure to check service times before visiting, as this can disrupt the walk up to the dome. read more

A definite must-see during your Museum Insel visit! I am not sure how much it costs to get in full price, but I know the reduced tickets (don't forget your student ID) are only 3 or 4€ (as of last summer when I went), a bargain considering this isn't just a cathedral that you pop your head into and leave. Once you get in, you will have the opportunity to marvel at the gloriously intricate interior of the main room, where mass is still held today. Take a seat in the pews and just let it all sink in. Although I am not a religious person, it still felt quite peaceful and refreshing to just sit there and enjoy being in this beautiful place. After that, you can go and take a look at the crypt. They have some of the graves of the royal family still in the mass room, but you will be able to see a lot more downstairs. It is a little creepy (well yeah...it's a crypt...), but it is kind of neat that there is public access down there. Then after, make sure to take a look out atop the cathedral up on the viewing deck. Unfortunately, I don't think the route up there will be accessible for everyone (no elevator, lots of stairs, sometimes climbing up in tight hallways). If you are lucky enough to be able to go up though, you will be rewarded with a wonderful view of central Berlin! I'm sure there are other exhibits and what not to see while you're there, but I spent a good hour, hour and 15 min on the three activities mentioned above. read more

Berliner Dom architecture style is fantastic! It was first built in Baroque style in 1750 by Johann Boumann the Elder and after changed in 1822 to neoclassical style by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Lustgarten (park) in front of church is a nice place for taking a break. read more

A gorgeous cathedral. How this survived World War 2 and the advent of communism in East Germany is beyond me. Well worth stopping by if you are walking around the city. There's also a grassy area in front which makes for a nice place to sit and chill out as you tour around. read more

Absolutely stunning! This is gorgeous inside and out. The detail put into it is amazing. 7 euro to enter, 4 Euro for students with ID (make sure to bring it- didn't have it so no discount). They have tombs in the crypt below and caskets in the church itself. On the second floor, you get a better view of the church and can see the plans and layout. Take a trip up to the dome if you're able. The statues are awesome up close and you get some good views of the city!! read more

100% Awesome. The history of this place is such that I actually bought one of those souvenir books in the museum shop. The entry price is low, and of course goes toward preservation. The cathedral itself is simply gorgeous. When you see the damage the Allies did at the close of the war, its rather amazing that the cathedral is here for us to enjoy at all. To call the exterior 'exuberant' is really an understatement.... it borders on the fantastic. The interior? Soaring. Inspiring. Magnificent. They also hold services and concerts here. I will be availing myself of a concert soon and will report back with an update then. The crypt and museum are wonderful. Take the time to watch the video history at the little screen - in German and English. Helpfully, the entire museum exhibit is in both languages. Sadly, the crypt is only in German, limiting my ability to appreciate that as well - but its still a powerful place to visit. At the end of the tour there is even a cafe for a respite and a nosh, and the usual pay toilets. Gotta make sure to cover that attendant that no one actually cares about. EDIT TO ADD: Got to attend a concert here. Guiseppe Verdi's Requiem. Its a lovely place to see a work performed, and I was in a great seat, but the volume could have been up just a tad. Those seats are a little on the stiff side - not great for long sits with a back problem. Still, worth doing at least once. read more

Berliner dome. Beautiful inside. Your museum card does not work here. It is 7 euro each to enter, 3 for the audio guide. The audio guide is worth it as it adds quite a bit to the tour, but if you've toured cathedrals before you can Get the jist. It is .50 euro to pee with a guard present monitoring who comes in and out. Fantastic place, the bathroom charge needs to go. Yes it's only .50 to use the bathroom, but it was 7 euro just to enter the place. Would you go to a restaraunt, pay 20 euro for a meal, then have them charge you 50 cents each time you used the toilet? This is not a public bathroom to begin with... And admission was already paid. And yes they have a cafe in there..... If you are pregnant or have ibs, utilize the several other museums around that you can enter using your Berlin pass and who do not charge you for the bathroom before going to the Berliner Dome. read more

this review encompasses both the Dom and the cathedral it's a part of. this is a really stunning piece of architecture. it was built in the mid-15th century and has changed religious affiliation throughout the days (started out Catholic, and then passed between various Protestant affiliations). throughout the ages, the Hohenzollern royal family primarily used this church. their crypt is in the basement and is also available for viewing - a lot of their caskets are stored there. some rooms have exhibits showcasing the history, construction, destruction, and rebuilding of the church throughout the ages. I highly suggest putting on a good set of walking shoes and ascending to the very top of the Dome. do it on a day when the weather is good. though it's certainly not the highest spot in Berlin, the view is incredible! hope that you luck out and are able to view the grand chamber when a service is in session. the organ is truly majestic. the price is cheap (5 Euro full price, 3 Euro reduced). definitely a must-see in Berlin (though I admit, pretty much everything I saw here was great). read more

There's an entire museum tour which i wasn't expecting, including history of the Dom, art, and architecture, leading up to the top which had a beautiful view (especially if you don't want to pay to go to the top of fernsehturm). The outside is amazing & is the best part of this cathedral. The inside is pretty, but in comparison to other cathedrals it is very simple. The 7 euro it cost to get in is way overpriced, in my opinion. My first thought when we walked in was "this is it?" The climb to the dome is somewhat standard. The crypt is also basic & standard, nothing special. The workers are kinda rude, especially the woman who monitors the bathroom. Pay on the way in, get yelled at on the way out with her demanding more money. I was stunned when I witnessed her doing this! My advice is to enjoy the beauty of this cathedral from the outside, & spend your money on something better. The inside is nothing spectacular. read more

I had gotten the Berlin Pass and so I could use it on all the famous sites and museums in Berlin. This was such a beautiful place. The dome itself is really beautiful from the inside and from the outside. I highly recommend this as a place to go to in Berlin. You can climb up to the top (lots of winding stairs!) and see the view from there. The sun was just about to set when I got here and the lights from the nearby Christmas markets plus the beautiful views of Berlin were magnificent. Highly recommended! read more
