We got here near the tail end of the event, so we didn't spend much time inside and went walking along the little trail where they had signs up with information about turkeys spread out through a little loop around the woods. It's a lovely preserve, and I'll bet it's particularly beautiful in the spring and summer. The building is small but sufficient to have some programs and there are bathrooms here. There are a few outbuildings as well; I'm not sure if there are programs there too or not. There's a good deal of parking here. Keep an eye on their calendar to have an excuse to come out, or just spend some time wandering the trails in peace and quiet.

I wasn't adequately prepared because it was a spur of the moment decision, so I didn't have a jacket or warm enough clothes, so I didn't stay or walk around too long. (And sadly their giftshop didn't have any sweatshirts -- I would've bought one if they had because it would've solved my problem. So, note to Ryerson: sell sweatshirts in the fall!). I've since come back here for an art exhibit (see my review on the Brushwood Center page for that info). I cannot wait to return again in the spring and definitely multiple times next fall. I want to explore it all.

This location has all the basic features such as areas to fish or boat, as well as paths for walking, hiking, and bicycling. There's also a grove available for picnics. Parking typically isn't too difficult and people are generally spread out fairly well across the woods, so you can enjoy a casual stroll without worrying about feeling crowded. These woods have a good variety of natural features that make it a great place to take pictures of the fall colors. If you have the right lenses, there's a nice variety of birds that can be photographed -- or possibly deer, rabbits, and other wildlife. Overall, it's amazing to have such a beautiful area in the middle of the busy suburbs. Definitely worth a visit if you live in this area and want to enjoy some natural beauty.

I was pleasantly surprised at how many different things there were to do here, but indoors and outdoors. Outdoors I was able to see a variety of animals including a coyote, owl, hawk, eagle, kestrel, and fox. Though they were caged, I got to see them fairly up close and hear the different sounds that they make. Indoors, there were various interactive exhibits as well as live turtles and various educational displays. Overall this is definitely worth a visit if you're hiking in the area and want to see a nicely maintained and educational display that helps to explain some of the wildlife nearby.

River Trails has many programs at the Nature Center and in the woods surrounding it. Lots of great native gardens to attract pollinators like bumble bees and humming birds. The trails take you through maple heavy woods that put on spectacular color shows as the leaves turn in the fall. Fall Fest draws hundreds of visitors who watch re-enactments from the fur trapping days when the Des Plaines River was a super-highway for Native Americans and European trappers alike. They also show how to tap the Maple tress to make syrup. River Trails has something for everyone, whether you want to see bee hives, hike a trail, or learn about the local plant and animal communities. Definitely a place to spend a day!

The Buffle Creek Forest Preserve is a good place for an easy walk. The day we were there we had no…read moreissue with parking, but it was not crowded. It is mainly an open prairie with low growing plants and few trees. The walking path winds through wide-open restored prairies and some creeks. I can imagine in the summer it get hot since there is very little covering to offer shade.

A serendipitous find as I was searching for a place en route to the Chicago southwest suburbs…read moreduring the 2017 solar eclipse, there was intermittent cloud cover here and there and I just ended up here. It's a really nice preserve, probably a little more populated during the eclipse than usual. It's peaceful and pretty, a nice patch of nature for short hikes or just meditating. The garbage cans were filled which probably didn't help the problem of flying biting insects, I'll bet late August it is just inevitable to encounter mosquitoes in a Midwestern forest preserve. This seems like a good place for bird watching though the birds of prey did seem somewhat perturbed by the eclipse.

Seems like a nice quiet lake. Watched 2 hawks soar around the skies. One even had another bird…read morethat kept landing on it while it was soaring. Bet that was a fun ride. I've seen this lake get real weedy but to my surprise it was completely clear today.

Gallery Park and Lake Glenview are wonderful parts of The Glen. The lake trails cover less than 2…read moremiles, and are an easy, flat hike around Lake Glenview. The park and lake have been landscaped with native plants and offer great colorful additions from Spring through Autumn. The trails are paved but there are also single track trails of crushed gravel that follow the lake shore more closely. There are also tick warning signs along the lakeside trails which are nice reminders to hikes to check out their shoes and clothes after a hike to make sure you are not bringing home any hitchhikers! The scenery here is peaceful and relaxing. The lake is large and very pretty and it's easy to forget you are in suburban Chicago. The park offers tennis courts, work-out stations, and a small amphitheater. This is a great natural area to hike and enjoy our beautiful native plants!!

Gallery Park started out as a collection of flat aprons and runways in the Glenview Naval Air…read moreStation. The Naval station closed in '93, and the hundred and fifty acres that now comprise Gallery Park became available, and were incorporated as this park. Tip: There are several different trails here, all of which loop around Lake Glenview. The lake also has several piers, some small islands, and a bridge My two favorite trails here are the Lake Trail (one and a half miles long) and the Park Trail (one point eight miles long). I used to also very much enjoy the Lakeside Trail, but I ran into far too many ticks the last time I went there, so I've been avoiding it. Over and above the hiking trails, the park also has several soccer fields, tennis courts, and even some catch-and-release fishing spots. Last (but not least) there's a fitness zone with equipment for cardio steps, chest presses, an crunches, etc. But wait, there's more! You'll also find a children's garden, bike racks, water fountains, and picnic tables. All in all this is a pretty cool place to relax and get some nature on :-)

There's majestic trees, great water views, and a great variety of plants. Worth a visit if you want to get away from the typical forest preserve.

What's even better is the boathouse that has some food and snack options as well as the rental options. The pricing on the food is absolutely fair If not super generous and the pricing on the kayaks paddle boats, etc. is also very fair. This is a great place to come to whether it's warm or cold. The walk is very scenic as are the houses. I have always found lots of families here which is fantastic. This place is truly an asset to the community. I'm so glad that it's here.

Most people go to LA to walk, jog, roller blade, or bike, but there's a lot more to do--you can…read morerent a canoe, a paddle boat, a sailboat, or go fishing! There is a 2 mile blacktop paved loop around the lake. It is mostly flat and only about 10-15% shaded. The trail has two lanes--a walking / running lane, and a biking / roller blading lane. This can be tricky to navigate, especially when it is busy. While there are no dogs allowed on the path, you should expect to encounter a goose crossing or two during your visit. "The Boathouse" has restrooms, and there are a number of park benches and water fountains along the trail. Don't forget to visit the large playground with the kids.

So he enters my car crusted with dirt and mud. It's extremely spacious and you could take over one corner without encountering anyone. But man I wish there was a hose of some sort.
