Gallery Park is a beautiful development that served as a Naval Air Station from 1923 until 1995. After the facility shut down the large tract of land was developed into a variety of uses. One of my high school classmates went to school at Oklahoma State University. After graduating & working for a number of years he decided to join the Air Force. There are a certain number of hours that are required before you can be a pilot so he took out a T-6 training jet and flew from Texas up to Glenview Naval Air Station where we got together for lunch. How cool is that checkout a jet fly up to a military base have lunch with a friend and fly back to Texas. He eventually ended up flying a C3 transport plane. The Glen was built along with housing and Gallery Park. I grew up in Mt Prospect which is directly west of what is now "The Glen". When my mother was still alive I use to pick her up and her caretaker Pearl & take her there & we would walk around the pond at The Glen. My mom was so funny she would tell people that we walked around the lake at The Glen when in reality she sat in a wheelchair and I pushed her around the lake. I miss my mom . I said to her Who walked around the lake mom lol ? Anyhow after the chiropractor today it was a beautiful sunny day about 66 degrees when I started walking & about 70 degrees when I finished. I took 2 laps around the pond/lake (about 1.5 miles for 1 lap (man made)). There were quite a few people out today walking, running, walking dogs...a perfect day to be outside. There were also some people fishing. They also have tennis courts, but they were refinishing the courts today. It's very nice that they were able to repurpose the Naval Air Base and make "The Glen" & "Gallery Park" (all together 5.4 miles today)

Gallery Park is Glenview's *Central Park*, and covers 142 acres of land. Located on the site of the old Glenview Naval Air Base, its name pays tribute to Captain Daniel Gallery - who's notoriety is for commanding the ship which captured the German submarine U-505 during World War II. If you've ever been to Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, you've probably seen the U-505 submarine that has been on display since 1954. My hubby and I have been taking numerous walks during the pandemic to enjoy as much fresh air and calm whenever possible. Yesterday we finally made it to Gallery Park, and we regret not stopping by sooner. Woooooow! If I lived in Glenview, this park would be a regular stop. There's easy parking, it's spacious so you can keep a safe distance from others, and it's so clean and well maintained. The exterior walking path around the outer most perimeter of the lake is 1.8 miles. We decided to start on that one, and then our plan was to circle back around to one of the shorter paths to see the rest of the park. In truth it was a pretty sunny day, and we got overheated after once around (not much shade). Along that 1.8 mile pathway, we encountered numerous activities taking place. First-off, we passed by a family fishing (catch and release only) in one of the lagoon areas. Next, we encountered some lovely lilly pad covered waters. While taking in all the beauty around us, we quickly learned to stay right or left on the path, because a skateboarder and bike family came barreling through. Everyone was careful, but I realized the pathways are shared by many. After passing by a walking bridge in the distance and tall prairie grasses and hidden gravel trails, we came across an outdoor workout facility (sorry no photos since people were using it). The tennis courts were well maintained, and then around the bend from the soccer field we found a beautiful war memorial dedicated to those who served in WWII and Captain Daniel (mentioned above). After the war memorial, we encountered wild geese in a grassland (and lots of goose poop...look out), and headed to a beautiful fountain. Our last stop was the amphitheater built into the side of the hill. What a wonderful resting stop after a brisk walk. Gallery Park has something for everyone, and there is so much to see. Next time we're planning to take the inner paths and explore some of those off-the-beaten-path gravel trails. We also noticed a steep hill that we look forward to adventuring on for a nice calf workout. Stop by for an escape!

The gallery park is a beautiful park in the Glen with a one way trail around the lake. It has ample parking, beautiful native Illinois prairie plants, and it is home to variety of birds, fish and insects. I am glad that it is located so close to my house.

Such a beautiful spot for a 1.8 mile walk, run or ride. The wildlife from starlings to turtles to a Great Blue Heron; we marvel at this lake area that used to be an airport runway.

A beautiful park with paved and unpaved trails. There are fishing docks and bridges overlooking ponds adorned with Lilly pads. A great place to take a quick walk on a lunch break or spend the day with the family.

Came to this place to do a little exercise and sightseeing. We drove to the park around 7 ish. There is a middle school located right next door but since we came later there was a large amount of parking space available. Walking around I noticed there's a good amount of playgrounds and water sprinklers for children to enjoy and spend time in. For those who love to bike there is also a biking trail filled with beautiful scenery and landscape. For people like me who like to walk/jog there is a pathway that enables you to walk around and get a good view of the lake. They also have a few hills you can up to get a better view of the area. We stopped for a few minutes by the rocks on the lake and just took in the amazing view. It was really calm and a great place to read a book and just relax from the day. You also have the option of fishing by the lake. Overall, I really enjoyed this park both for the activities and beautiful scenery available. Definitely will be returning to this park next time I visit. :)

    Little Bear Garden Park

I've been hearing about this park for a while and we were able to take a visit over there today…read more I'm glad I knew what I was looking for because Google Maps was going to take me to a small playground on the other side of the school, rather than Little Bear Park which is on the very corner of Patriot and Chestnut (and is almost entirely fenced in, which makes it attractive with little kids). The Little Bear Park is actually a section within the larger Gallery Park, so you may need to put that in if your GPS is confused about LBP. This park was established as part of the redevelopment of the military airfield in Glenview. Overall, I was disappointed in the park, but there were some things I really loved about it along with those that left a bit to be desired. First, it looked like a gorgeous, romantic garden like you might envision from an Austen novel. Truly a beautiful setting, with a small hedge maze and a several picnic tables. Quite an idyllic little spot within the larger park, and ostensibly where it gets the "garden park" part of its name. There's also a really awesome water feature here. It's really large, and unlike some "splash pads" that are little more than a tall pipe sticking out of the ground, this one had several arms coming out of the ground of different heights. It also had some water coming from spots in the ground, for a lot of different ways to play. My kiddo got soaked and loved it. Sadly, the playground section looked kind of old and worn. It has a cute castle/medieval theme, but all the play equipment was quite faded. Of more concern was that the playground terrain, which was that composite rubbery stuff, was broken off in quite a few places; more than once my babe brought me small or large pieces. Seems potentially fraught in a few different ways, but it was weird since in all the parks I've been to with that kind of ground cover I haven't seen chunks of it missing throughout the playground. There's lots of parking at/around this park, because it shares space with a middle school and park district headquarters. The playground itself isn't the attraction for me--though if we are already in Glenview, I might stop--but I would absolutely return for a beautiful picnic in the garden, and that's what really makes it shine.

Heads up if your kids like swings: there are none at this park. But there's a cool splash pad, a…read morehedge maze, a play structure, and a huge sand pit area.

In other words, it is a place to experience what mother nature has to offer, for both adults and kids. I would say the trail paths are kid-friendly and not too long for the little ones to explore. However, I think it is better to visit when daylight is available. Bike routes are separate from the walking path, so one doesn't have to watch out for bikers passing through. The Lakeview (or pond view) is serene. There are a few benches to sit down and enjoy the scenery. I see they have camp fires and other activities from time to time. I bet these are fun, as weather permits. In the beginning of the trail, a small scaled playground definitely can pull your kiddos away to release their energy. Parking is plenty and convenient. They host camps here during the summer months, so you'll find chalk drawings on some of the paths and signs on some of the trees around that time, but it doesn't really detract from the atmosphere. (This is where my sibling and I learned to canoe and build campfires back in the day.) Chipmunks and geese abound; be sure to also check out the fish in the lagoon. They have shelters with picnic tables scattered throughout the preserve, so this is a peaceful place for a picnic lunch when camp's not in session. Just remember to leave the area as clean as you found it... and don't try starting any campfires without permission.

The parking lot of the park is very large as well, which is good to support all the activities. They have multiple ballpark fields (three, I believe), as well as batting cages and a soccer field. There's a skate park, and I was surprised to see the breadth of folks who use it--there were some younger folks here but I also saw someone in his 50s or 60s skateboarding. They have a playground. There's a picnic-type shelter for people to have gatherings, complete with a fire pit. And there's a golf course! I don't know anything about golf but it certainly looked large. I think the golf course is free, as may be the other activities (unsure about the batting cages). There are also walking trails, and you can fish here but you must release what you catch. And near one of the ballparks, there was a tall hill... perhaps tobogganing in the winter? Really nice, well-kept park for all to enjoy. Glad to have learned about it and hope to return.
