We mentioned the article and he seemed impressed since he didn't think the article would bring anyone in. We loved the eclectic feel of the place. It was a Wednesday and the special was pot pie so that's what we decided to order along with a bottle of Spanish wine. He mentioned the pot pies sold out by 5pm the week before. It was probably the tastiest pot pie we've ever had. Don't pass this place up if you're in the area.

What a gem of a place - great ready to eat food, specialty grocery items, AND big smiles. Wednesday - pot pie day! Hefty for its size - the chicken pot pie yesterday (flavors change) was loaded with so much meat that a slice didn't change its shape on my plate. That pie crust was buttery goodness! Thursdays thru Saturdays - hot rotisserie chickens (ready at 4pm)! Sticky caramelized skin, mmmm. These pastured chickens are raised in VT, so they are as clean as they are delicious. Daily baked goods - the banana buttercotch scone, brown butter chocolate chip cookie, & raspberry chocolate chip muffin are all fresh & so yummy, with crispy edges and moist centers. Their strawberry pop tarts look to die for! Groceries - an excellent selection: local eggs, beautiful cheeses, Vermont Salumi, Sisters of Anarchy ice creams, panko breadcrumbs, Asian condiments (fine brewed soy sauce, soup bases, etc.), Tony's chocolate bars, fresh produce, frozen fresh raviolis, kombuchas and specialty sodas, and a large selection of wines. Giving back is a loving theme here. With every purchase, you have an opportunity to give your tips to their monthly partner. This month they are supporting the Pride Center of Vermont. I'm looking forward to next Saturday's dinner special (eat in or to go), and Sunday's savory hand pie!

Still Not The Best Hours! But Better Than Before…read more.. My first rant about Yankee Spirits mentioned their terrible hours. Since posting that rant they have increased their hours on Friday and Saturday from closing at 7:30 p.m. to now closing at 9:00 p.m.- which makes more sense. I'd still be happy to see them open til 10:00 p.m. on the weekends but this is a nice change! When I do get into the store, I'm never really impressed with their beer selection. I mean there are two coolers and that's it for beer other than growlers. I've seen gas stations with better beer selection than Yankee Spirits. Liquor selection is ok, but nothing to write home about. This store has a decent wine selection though. Lastly, they could sell more juices/ mixers in larger quantities, you know so people can make mixed drinks. I was specifically looking for orange juice which they only had smaller, personal bottles rather than larger jugs. I didn't see much for other juices either though they do have some margarita mixes. woo Overall I was disappointed with Yankee Spirits which is a shame because they have a lot of potential. It appears they do the bare minimum to operate a liquor store. End Rant.

Vermont Beer Collective is a craft beer specialty store that opened in Waterbury, Vermont in…read moreFebruary 2024. It was founded by husband and wife Nate and Liz Dunbar. The shop on 3 Elm Street had originally opened under the name 'Craft Beer Cellar' in December 2013. It was part of the 'Craft Beer Cellar' chain of specialty beer stores that was founded by Suzanne Schalow and Kate Baker in 2010 with the opening of their flagship store in Belmont (MA). Two years later, they began franchising and at the chain's peak they had 33 locations in 15 states. Mark Drutman was the original owner of the Waterbury location. By 2019, CBC locations began to close (including the flagship location which closed in 2023). After the Dunbars made their home in Vermont, they decided to switch craft beer from their hobby into their livelihood. Drutman sold the Waterbury CBC to the Dunbars in May 2023. They slowly began to make the shop their own and by the following year they left the franchise and unveiled a new logo and a new name. The Vermont Beer Collective now has one of the best craft beer selections that can be found in the state. The Dunbars even added a bar in the store where customers can sample beer from 8 taps as well as a three-tap LUKR faucet from the Czech Republic. The couple also have a love for hiking, skiing and cycling and hope to make their shop a venue for the outdoor sports community to gather. I recently visited the Vermont Beer Collective while I was on a Vermont craft beer road trip. It's conveniently located right across the street from the popular Prohibition Pig Restaurant & Brewery. After enjoying some delicious smoked meat and a pint there, I headed across the street to check out the shop. I was really impressed by their selection! They had offerings from the best breweries in Vermont, around the country, and even breweries from the international scene. We're talking the best of the best! The bar was also really cool! The place is not just a shop where you can buy beer but also a place where you can hang out. I spoke for a few minutes with owner Nate Dunbar. He was really friendly and he told me that he's originally from my home state of Connecticut. He explained that the store had about $25,000 of flood damage in their basement just weeks after they bought it, but they pressed on. He told me about the future plans that he has for the shop and seemed very optimistic. Before leaving, I purchased a coveted bottle by Belgian-based Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen to take home. I'm happy to have discovered the shop and I wish them all the best!

If you're new to Woodstock and love beer, you'll want to know about two establishments: Woodstock…read moreHops N' Barley is one of them. [The Worthy Kitchen is the other.] Woodstock Hops N' Barley offers one of the best selections of craft beers in the Upper Valley, with a large selection of bottled and canned beers. They also fill growlers: the selection on tap varies, giving you the option of tasting different craft beers. And the staff is great: Matt, the owner, knows his stuff and can offer an informed perspective on his stock. But the store doesn't just offer great beers. There's also a really good selection of wines. The wine selection isn't large, but it's well-curated, featuring many terrific European wines, including some fine Austrian producers and varietals that are hard to find in many stores. Many of the wines are from Artisanal Cellars in White River Junction, which imports very good wines, focusing on small, high-quality wines. There's also a good selection of Vermont and imported ciders and meads -- and usually a cider on tap for growler fills. [The cider selection itself is probably the best in the Upper Valley.] Woodstock Hops N' Barley also features beer-making supplies, from yeasts to carboys. And in an interesting twist, the store also rents DVDs. In an era where many video rental shops have closed, this will be a surprise to many people. But if you spend any time in Vermont, you'll realize why it's necessary. Internet service here is sporadic and slow for many of us, which makes streaming video impractical or impossible. So DVDs are necessary, if a seeming throwback.
