A bit less than meh. Made an appointment for the Short pump location to memorize my little ones first Christmas and making 6 months. I was traveling and took a recommendation that this location was well organized. The wait was fairly long especially since appointments are required, this was expected as it was holiday season. The open studio was unexpected however and makes for distracted babies and nosey patrons while your ten to fifteen minute session is occurring. Although I found the photographers pleasant & friendly, they lack the variety of options I prefer in a photo shoot. I suppose this to be expected at a strip mall studio. After your fifteen minutes you're ushered over to review 'packages'. Since we don't live local, I wanted to purchase these entire CD of shots and print at my own discretion at home. This is NOT a purchasing option however. You MUST select the poses you wish to purchase and a silly little vignette shadow is placed around your favorite shots. Problem is I don't want or need 10x13 images, so I asked could they be smaller. For example 2 5×7s versus 1 10x13. The sales clerk couldn't understand my request and kept explaining that it wasn't an option. The best she could do is an 8x10. Any images NOT selected for printing are unavailable to you. I asked about postcards/Christmas cards and was informed they can print them for me. Roughly $1.00 each, but they're printed on photo paper and NOT card stock, so you'd need to purchase envelopes which makes the process useless. I then asked about printing locally where I live. I explained I live in SoCal and would like to print once home. I was told I can go into any location to have items printed.......BUT, this company has 0 locations in California and the sales clerk didn't even bother to look. For the 9 poses I purchased, of which I DIDN'T want printouts but HAD to have because that's how they work, I paid $290. For that amount I could have hired a professional photographer who would have come to my location for an hour shoot, done proper edits, and provided the entire shoot digitally. I'm not impressed and would not recommend. read more

Pictures were terrible, head cut off, fake backgrounds, poor posing, poor lighting, no editing, cheap props, disorganized photographer. I had my 3 month old in there and he was starting to get fussy after an hour of picture taking so I told the photographer that he was done. She told me that she had to take 60 pictures per company policy. So, she was just shooting to hit the mandated quota and my 3 month old was miserable. After the session was done they tried to sell me ridiculous amounts of pictures (that were terrible) and charge $600. When I asked how much for 2 or 3 pictures they refused to give me a straight answer. Almost like they can not sell just one or two pictures. Then the package that I ordered came with a canvas. Well, they checked me out (never giving me a receipt) and sent me out the door. Later I realized I was missing the canvas so, I had to call back up there and they explained that it had to be ordered and would be shipped to the store. (Never explained to me when I was there) So, here we are over a month later and I still have not heard a word from them about the canvas. I would not waste your money going here. read more

We are new to the area and trying to get family photos done, this place will not provide any information to you on prices until AFTER you get your pictures taken and VERY LITTLE detail on anything else as it's a secret. We were able to go to another place (not another location) and they were able to provide prices and answered all the questions we had, that is customer service. That is where we booked at. Won't recommend portrait innovations to anyone, why waste your time to then realize the prices are more then you want. read more

We made an appointment to take couple's pictures a week in advance. We arrived for our appointment 5 minutes early and the atmosphere was downright chaotic: Crying babies and yelling mothers. After waiting 40 minutes after our appointment time, being bumped into, yelled at and observing some interesting situations, to say the least, we decided to leave and not return. The photos turned out pretty good. I don't like that the photo area is so open and they don't ask what backgrounds you want they just choose. The coupons are typically on only one pose for a bunch of pictures be prepared to pay more if you want more poses. Awful!!! They schedule an appointment and you have to wait forever before someone gets to you. Let's talk about the fees...they had a coupon for 19.99 but did not disclose all of the terms and conditions. For one, the package only includes one pose. In addition to that, they charge 30 bucks for each additional and they do not give you the disk that is promised in the package. When I brought this up, the rep seemed surprised when I asked. I will not come here again, because I could've hired a photographer and it would've been cheaper and I would have rights to all of the photos. read more

I'll start with the good; We had a great photo session experience on the 18th of November. The staff was friendly, despite the busy holiday rush and we got a great variety of pictures to commemorate our moms birthday. Unfortunately that's where the good experience ends which is the reason for my 1-Star review. The check out process is purposely confusing. There are packages that come with various levels of add-ons but none of the prices are clearly published. We asked about a la carte options and our photographer wasn't sure how that would work. As we went through the tedious process of choosing which photos we wanted, the prices kept going up and up. Before I knew it, I ended up purchasing $300 worth of pictures! Not what I was expecting, but since it was a once in a lifetime gift for our mom's birthday, I sucked it up and paid. We were supposed to receive all of our photos in various sizes, a CD, a calendar, and a photo book. The problems got worse when we got our pictures back and a few of them were the wrong pose (my moms eyes were closed), and several poses had black borders around them, even though we specifically said we didn't want any photo effects. In one picture, he border cut off the top of our heads. We obviously didn't choose that. It's been almost exactly one month and despite my sister driving up to the location 3 times (I'm not local) they still haven't been able to reprint those pictures the way we want them AND have not sent our CD, calendar, or photo book. I'm still in talks with the manager Kristy (who is super nice BTW) to get the items I paid for. I fully expect this to be resolved this week or I'll be requesting a partial refund, which I'm told has to go through some awkward voucher process. Even if we do get our items (or I get my partial refund), I DO NOT recommend this company and don't plan to use their services again due to the fact that their pricing structure is not transparent and they don't seem to be able to deliver the product in a timely manner. Update: We did receive our items after a month and a half, however my review and recommendation stands the same. read more

The staff at this location is always friendly and the pictures always come out great. I only rate this place low because it is very expensive to get more than just one pose. You can get out of there at a reasonable price if you just buy a one pose special but if you want more than one pose, it usually comes out to an extra $20 a pose and adds up quickly. After waiting 2hrs after my scheduled appointment 5pm. If not for my ildest son living out of state and only here for the weekend i would have left. We took pictures and was rushed through that, leaving at 8pm. To have to return at 10pm to view approx 12 photos of garbage pictures. Eyes closed, heads covering faces, hair noticeably out of place, no full body shots, feet cut off and at least one of the kids aren't looking or smiling. And your asking me which photos do I like. 1. You have me not one option to choose from. I am suppose to have a hard time limiting what I want to buy. Not a hard time choosing A, 1 picture that looks decent enough to even take home. Writing this review as I sit here waiting to my 10 month old son cry. It's now been well over an hour since our scheduled appointment time and the management nonchalantly seems to regard this amount of a wait as a normal occurance. They did have the courtesy to call us before our appointment to let us know their printers were down and today's picturez would not be available for at least 4 days, but there was no mention of over an hour wait past normal appointment times. My advice to anyone thinking of having pictures done here is don't the service is terrible! read more

Great session for my baby first photo shoot and family pictures as well. The photographer was good with my kids and thought of different poses that would be nice pictures. The only issue was that they were overbooked and behind schedule and we end up waiting over an hour before we could take pictures. Those guys are everything else than photographers. It's like comparing McDonalds with a gourmet restaurant. They mess up the lighting, even though they just have to press buttons, thanks to computerization. To get the scene right you should tell them exacly what you want. They do not advise you correctly on how to hold your arms/hands or where to stand. Finally, when you get the pictures they come as sheets and you have the joy of cutting them yourself. Did family pictures today...10 of us. Had group and individual family pictures done. After finished the portraits, sat down went through all of the pictures to find the ones we wanted. Could customize our order for a price. Even got the disk of all 144 pictures that were done. You can't print them, but you can send them to others to fview and place them on facebook or whatever. Now, if you were to buy all the pictures then it could get pricey. Defiantely need to figure out what exactly you want. And usually you still get more pictures than you need. My appointment was at 4:30. As we sit here, there are folks that had a 3:15 appointment that STILL haven't had their photos taken!! This is horrible!! There has been no apology for the delay, not one of the SIX employees standing around offering anyone anything other than looking the other way when anyone asks how much longer. I came here for the first time in September for 6 month baby pictures, and I had a great experience! I didn't come here expecting the best photographers with great lighting. I came here because I wanted those kind of cheesy staged portraits circa late 80s early 90s. I would have rated it 5 stars. The second time around, not so much. I wanted to get some Christmas photos and Christmas cards made. When I arrived, I was told I wasn't on the schedule. I accidently scheduled the appointment a week later than I thought. The place was completely empty and they switched me to that day. I was apologetic and very appreciative. We waited a while for the "photographer" to return from lunch. I was OK with this since they were accommodating us after my scheduling mistake. Once we started the photo shoot, I realized she smelled very heavily of cigarette smoke. I wasn't very happy to have that strong smell around my 8-month-old. The session was very quick, maybe 15 or 20 minutes long? The first time I came in, we took pictures for almost an hour. We quickly went through the photos and a lot of them were disappointing, way too much light or not nearly enough. Again, I am not expecting MFA style photographers here. It's Portrait Innovation, not Sally Mann. But my first experience was so much better than the second go around... We found some that were OK and I picked out a card. I was told their printer was down but I could pick everything up the next day. So I did. The drive out there this time of year is miserable, totally not their fault but being in short pump twice in one week is too many times in a week. I got home and realized some of the pictures were so poorly printed. There are streaks of ink splattered down them. And the bottom of the card, where our names are, is completely cut off. I called to let them know I was very disappointed in them, and I was told that that just happens sometimes. If they know this happens from time to time, why aren't they checking for that and fixing it when it happens? Why was I given prints that obviously wouldn't be acceptable? I was told I could come in for new prints, then I was told it would probably be after Monday before they would be ready. I asked for a refund instead and they told me they can only refund same day prints. I explained that the printer was down the same day as our photo shoot so that wouldn't have been possible. All she said was that she knew. They finally gave me the corporate office's number but didn't tell me they weren't open on the weekends. I will be calling first thing on Monday, and I hope for a resolution. It's obvious that the people that work there are either very burnt out or simply don't care. read more

This was a terrible experience the entire staff was completely unprofessional, laughing and making fun of atleast 3 family members. They made one family member feel so uncomfortable they didn't even want to be in anymore photos. They were 45 minutes late for our appointment and ruined the entire experience for us. I took my 5 rowdy kids in to take advantage of the valentine's package deal. I misjudged or drive time so we were 40 minutes early for our appointment time. Oops! We only had to wait about 20 minutes, though. Precious was our photographer and she was GREAT! She laughed and joked along with my kids, she chose various backgrounds, kept shooting all the while...it was really fun. She tolerated my kids with absolute grace. During our photo review it was so hard to narrow down to just one favorite!!! I ended up spending a little more than I had planned, but it was totally worth every penny. We had a blast and the picture printout was fast and all 6 of us left in wonderful moods. I will most definitely return! read more

The first time I went there, everything was wonderful. Only complaint I had was the printer did not work and they gave me a discount because of it. So of course, I trusted them to do my daughter's first birthday pictures. This is a huge deal to me, so I wanted the pictures to be perfect. I guess I set my standards too high. 2 hours before the appointment, they called me saying the printer does not work again (I'm assuming it must never work). I get there at the scheduled time and the photographers go outside and stand there while my family and I waste time inside. During the photo shoot, I find out they don't have any birthday backgrounds as the website show. The photographer changed the background and then I realized every background was the same ones from my kid's Easter picture 2 months previous. Their website completely had me fooled and I just wanted to walk out (I was beyond disappointed). I tried to get past it and make it work so I asked to can my daughter use their #1 as a prop. The girl pulled out this small numbers block (I'm thinking what is this, ridiculous). All you can see is the 4 in all of the pictures, which took away from the idea that my daughter is turning 1, smh. Most of the props that were used looked worn. As much money as the pictures cost, you would think they can afford more backgrounds and up to par props. Anyway, the whole time the photographer had to keep hitting her camera because her camera or flash would stop working. Do you know how many good pictures were missed because it wouldn't work? Do you know how hard it is to get a good picture of an 11 month old and you missed moments because your equipment doesn't work properly?? Seems like none of the equipment works properly there. Ugghhhhh...We picked out 3 pictures and again, I know I was settling, but I tried to work with them. I ordered 3 different pictures and I had to wait for the disc with the pictures (this takes another 15-20 minutes of wasting time). I finally get home and just can't wait to look at the 3 pictures that were chosen. Only to find out there was only 1 picture on it. At this point, I am livid. I can't even call because they are closed. I called the next morning and they tell me that only 1 picture come in the package and I cannot get the other 2 on a disc, but I will get physical copies...I'm in disbelief...well what in the hell I paid all that money for, since I can't have the 3 chosen pictures on the damn disc and why wouldn't the girl tell me and let me choose another package or something. There was so much more in between that had me sooo upset. I will never return there...I MEAN NEVER. The price is too much to not get a decent experience and to waste so much of my time in one experience. read more

I want to say this is the most unprofessional photography business I've ever stepped foot in. My family scheduled an appointment for 10:20 got there 20 minutes earlier and they chose to take appointments of people who came in after us. Regardless of them being late we should have taken our photos at our scheduled time. One of the photographers tried to assure us that we would take out pictures in a few minutes but those minutes ended up being an hour so we left because we had other plans. We will NEVER do business with them again. Extremely disappointed because the pictures were scheduled the day before I go off to college. My husband and I had used this company on a few different occasions and always had a great experience, but I would have to say it's gone WAY DOWNHILL since our last visit. I made an appointment for my 1 year old God baby's portraits at 1:40pm on a Friday. We arrived there and there was only one person working in the entire studio! This one associate who was an assistant manager not only had to stop shooting our pictures every couple minutes to go answer the phone, help the desk, etc. But she obviously sent her help to lunch right before our appointment knowing that they had a baby session scheduled. Anyone who has ever been around a 1 year old knows that they have a extremely short attention span. So it was absolutely rediculous to have one person in the studio knowing that you have a baby portrait session scheduled! Not only all that, but the photo printers were down (AT BOTH LOCATIONS) for over a week, so we had to wait for our "Ready same day" pictures. As I'm seeing now. I really should have read the reviews before scheduling a appointment. I can assure you that we will not be returning after this experience! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!! The worst place ever to take pictures!! Staff don't pay attention to you at all as a customer .. I made an appointment showed up and was told I had to wait 45minutes .. what was the point of the appointment?? .. then there is absolutely NO PRIVACY!! When taking pics all the people that are waiting are right there watching you...after not getting courtesy of someone telling me that they are backed up , I'm going next or anything just sitting there looking dumb.. I realize I've been waiting for an hour then they have the balls to tell me another 30 minutes!! I couldn't get out of there quick enough !! Eh. Mixed feelings. Overall I just enjoy getting same day prints. Otherwise I've had good photographers and bad. My last visit, the photographer was an 18/19 year old young lady and for the first time doing anything, I could understand why some iobs require you to have years of experience before applying. I felt cheated and ripped off cause she blamed my 3 month old premie without putting forth effort past "oh mom I think she's tired and done." Noooo maybe she just doesn't like being stuffed in a wooden crate with some itchy shag rug. But somehow she could sit the additional 1.5 hours looking at the 100+ photos that were just captured to meet the company's quota so she could quit the session, all while being forced to pick at least one of the three photos showed. It was awful. Only 1 picture was worthwhile and I still paid 450 dollars. (Trust me at that point it was worth me paying that than to listen to another minute of her rambling about company policies) ugh. I wanted to complain but at the same time another lady came back yelling at the girl and made her cry. Yay for having compassion. read more

HORRIBLE COMPANY and terrible employees and I say company only because I've been to the two different locations around me and they both have terrible customer service as well as the results and outcome of my pictures ........... they are EXTREMELY UNORGANIZED , understaffed and over booked ! I had a 2:30 appointment with 5 children 5 and under and did not get a chance to take picture until after 5 o'clock not only that but the manager kadaja was our photographer and coulda took better pictures on my phone , shit my 5 year old takes better pictures than her she tried to end the session and had to be told that I know for a fact she didn't get a good picture and the session is not over and I asked her to understand they left us waiting for all these kids wayyyy to long to please be patient with them she then chuckled and told me " ha trust me I've been more than patient with you" soo once I actually did tell her they session was over we go sit down with another employee to go thru them , THE PICTURES LOOK LIKE SHIT angles are TERRIBLE out of the like 65 I had her take there was literally only 3 possibilities to choose from . Then this other employee walks up and explains the printer is down so now after everything we can't even get our pictures today ‍ so my sister nicely asks the lady for corporate information she said it's on your receipt she explain to her after the event that have taken place she is not spending any money here today the lady then claps her hands in my sisters faces and says " well you can leave then , and walks away . Mind you I'm sitting in the chair next to Marcus at that point my sister is completely embarrassed first by the photographer and now this other lady she leaves out crying FYI I'm looking through these shitty ass pictures not my sister for him to turn to me and say so you not buying any of these why am I wasting my time ... I let him know that everyone in here is very unprofessional and I suggest he shut his mouth and continue to click through the pictures because he gone put his self in the boat I was going to keep him out of and commend him for being the only nice employee so far so we finish I choose a picture ONLY because I put to much into these pictures being perfect today I bought 5 matching outfits got hair cuts braided 3 heads and then sat in there for 5 damn hours I was determined to get SOMTHING and not completely waste that much time of our day for NOTHING . So Marcus cashes me out and I ask for my receipt he tells me I can't have it until the printers are back up and pick up my pictures ok cool so I ask Marcus to print me another copy considering the lady said the information for corporate is on there so he prints me another but this one didn't have the same info on it so I asked can I see the original receipt he printed for the corporate information he was like I can't give you that one so as I'm walking away to discuss that with kadaja the manager he then wants to show me the receipt so I took a picture and reaches out the every individual on the paper for them to ask me to come back and do it over in which my session will be free um do I look stupid my session is already free I only pay for the pictures so to conclude all this the ENTIRE COMPANY IS HORSE SHIT read more

I was so excited to take my family to portrait innovations. Our family doesn't get to take pictures often since we are not together very much. We had an appointment at 2:00 that day. We arrived and there were a bunch of people. We asked the workers here how long it would take and there were four families in front of us! I was astonished as it was 2:05 yet they said we would not go until 3:30. We talked to another family and they had been there for at least an hour. Their appointment was at 1. So we went to the nearby mall to take pictures and that turned out well. The service was a disgrace. I feel bad for the families that have small kids or drive a long way. Trust me it is not worth it. They need new management because it is slow and they pack too many appointments in a day which causes people to wait and they get more money. DO NOT GO! DO NOT GO! read more

We have gone to this locations for many years. Their appointment times have always been a joke. I will not go unless I can get an appointment before 9:30 and still I plan to wait at least 30 mins. However, it was worth it because the quality was good for the price until this year. We arrive for our appointment on Tuesday and we were told the printer was down and we would have to wait until Wednesday for prints. We were also told that if that was not okay they would give us a CD so we could print elsewhere. It is now Thursday before Christmas and no pictures. Technical malfunctions are beyond the employees' control. What angers me in the number of times I have been lied to. 1. They lied about how long the printed had been down so I did not realize how backuped up they were and how unrealistic the Wednesday estimate was. 2. On Wednesday when I asked for a CD so I could print elsewhere they refused even though they promised that on Tuesday to get me to stay for the pictures. 3. Wednesday the manager told me she was taking some pictures to be printed in Fredricksburg and that mine would be among them and could be picked up Thursday morning. When I called Thursday morning I was assured she would be there with my pictures at 10. When I arrived at 10 the manager was not there. When I came back at 11 am, still not there and now they decide that in fact she did not print my pictures. read more

I made an appointment for Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at 5:20pm to have portraits done of my adult son and daughter for gifts for their 88 year old grandmother, (my mom). I admit I was a bit apprehensive after reading reviews but I decided to take a risk and see what came of it. It didn't take long at all to realize I had nothing to be concerned about at all. We were signed in within 90 seconds of walking through the front door, and told that our photographer, Ann, was ready and waiting for us in the first of two rooms that were going to be used. Ann had many years of photography experience at another studio but was new to Portrait Innovations. At first, she thought that my son and daughter were a couple, but after finding out that she was shooting brother and sister she asked Precious over to help with some ideas for poses. It wasn't necessary at all, because in the end, every portrait we chose were the poses Ann had come up with to begin with! She was brilliant! I sat in the studio in an out of the way corner and watched the entire process. What followed was an hour of laughs and giggles and some magical photography! It was SO hard picking over the pictures to get to a set which I could afford. Every single one of the pictures was magic! Pictures were framed and given to my mother for Hanukkah this week, and I cannot thank Ann and Precious enough for giving my mother "the best Hanukkah [she] could ever remember!" As for me, Ann and Precious gave me a wonderful hour with my son and daughter, a memory to be cherished for the rest of my life along with the CD with all the poses. All, in all, we couldn't have been happier with Portrait Innovations in Short Pump, Virginia. I am already making plans to bring my son and his family in, and my daughter and her partner in, and thinking of all the many portraits our family can have done there! I had a appointment at 7:40 at your short pump location and my family and I arrived early before time. It was a little busy grant it I know it's the holidays and I never been there before the holidays well when it came time for us to be called we sat in the room with the Christmas tree for 15 minutes no one came to take our picture one girl was sitting on the bench doing nothing and another girl was sitting in the printing room behind the photo printer texting, and another girl was just walking around. I am extremely upset about this and I will not be coming back for a while. read more

We have been here several times and after today, I remembered why I vowed never to go here again. Arrived 5 minutes early for our 3:30 appointment, told a photographer would be "right with" us. At 4:35, over an hour after our appointment we finally get called back. When I complained about the wait and that I would have appreciated them telling us they were running behind when we checked in, I got blank stares followed by a feeble "sorry" and excuse that someone called out sick. Would have been helpful to have that information an hour earlier when we checked in with our 3 children. Ironically, someone called out on our last visit and they were again short staffed. I think that must be the running theme at this location - never enough staff members to cover all the appointments they have made. A very unprofessional, almost like why are you here type of attitude from the person who took our photos. I was not pleased with the person's laziness or even lack of trying to hide that they would much rater being doing something else rather than taking pictures that we had scheduled well in advance. It wasn't like we just showed up unexpected. The photographer was so untrained that half the pictures lighting were so bad that it looked like halos of ghosts were in them and when we made comment about them, the response we got was "i hit the correct lighting button". I felt that my 10 year old could have done a better job and would have been friendlier. The photographer was so lazy that when it came to setting up the props she asked my wife and I to grab the items and set them up while she stood or sat there waiting on us We did however get a few good pictures of our 1 year old son and that is what the main goal was but i was not happy with the experience and can't see myself using this company again just because of the lack of customer service. You can either take this as just a one-time occurance or test the waters but i have never felt like i ever needed to say something on this forum until today. read more
