I scheduled an appointment for a blow dry and curl styling and then on the phone I asked could I always go in and change it in person if I decide to do an updo instead and they said, of course, you can just tell your stylist then when I went to my appointment, I told my stylist that I wanted to do an updo instead of a hair curl style and she said oh I don't know how to do that and then I said on the phone when I looked at the appointment, they said I could change it and she said yeah you could do another stylist, but you would have to book another appointment. So instead, I told her I will still go on with a curling hairstyle but then she said if you will do an updo later you would have to just curl the ends and there's no need for me to do your hair. So I thought does she not want me to continue with my appointment and just to leave? Additionally, when she blow drying my hair, it felt like she was pulling it very aggressively. I feel like I lost 5% of my hair. And I showed her an info pic of what I wanted and the end result was nothing like the picture. She also tried to sell me on the hair products she used on me and I said oh I'll take a picture and maybe buy it later online and she replied you won't be able to buy those anywhere online they only sell them at salons that have contracts with the brand. I looked up the product and immediately found it on Amazon! At the end of the day the only great service that I got was the free Diet Coke. read more

I booked a manicure at Avant Garde because of its renown name. Price was website was $32. When I arrived I was directed to a different salon a block away called Portfolio. There, Sandra, the nail tech proceeded with my manicure, trying to upsell me the Russian manicure, which I denied. She cut my finger during the cuticle removal. I asked for shiny buff, no color on nails. When I checked out, she told the receptionist to charge me $35. It's disturbing how a salon smack in the middle of coral gables does not adhere to its advertised prices and instead makes prices for their services after the service has been rendered, without any explanation. read more

Great for blow dries, manicures, and pedicures. However, I would NOT recommend for color, hair extensions or any other services besides the ones I listed in the beginning of this review. I went to this salon, with the same "Italian hair stylist" for color, cut and hair extensions. I will be very honest, every single time I was disappointed and tried to give the salon and him the benefit over the doubt. I left with my hair fried because he did not properly know how to dye hair, AT ALL, and I have patches of my hair missing on the back of my scalp. How do I know he does not know how to properly hair dye? simply, because after the 3rd time of him bleaching my hair ON THE SAME DAY another stylist HAD TO TAKE OVER. Thank God she did, after one try she was able to complete my hair. Keep in mind, I had gone 2 other times for him to correct the hair. I left each time with the same color - orange. Orange was not the color I wanted nor showed him. I showed him pictures before hand when I received a blow dry from him and each time I went in for the same dye service - and he said this would be very simple for him to do. However, he never delivered, never. Kindly keep in mind, each time that I came in for the hair stylist to TRY to correct my hair color. I was charged for a blow dry? Even though I was ONLY going because he did not do his job properly the 1st time. In case you are curious, I asked for a highlight face frame in red. Honestly, with the amount of time I was there I would have been happy with any color of red JUST NOT ORANGE. Also, I was not advised I would be charged for blow dry until checkout. I paid but this left a very ill taste when I was only going back for him to remove the orange he kept putting on my hair. I can continue for hours on how terrible my experience was but I do not have that time to continue to review. What I can tell you, is DO NOT SEE HIM for your hair services JUST BLOW DRY. HE IS EXTREMEMLY NICE AND DOES GREAT BLOW DRIES. However, he is not trained properly to do hair extensions, cut or any dyes. Based on my experiences with him, he has to be self taught with very little experience. He is a great talker and this is why I went with him. I am very much regretted my choice to leave Avante Garde to try something less expensive and a salon with more flexibility. I expressed my concern with the salon and the salon owner has a little girl managing the salon. I don't remember her name, its really not important neither, but she's just a rude THINK SHE KNOWS little girl that truly knows nothing of hair or customer service. This is obviously based on several encounters I have had with her, good and bad. I am assuming her aunt or family member is the owner of the salon and got her the job there. SHE IS VERY LUCKY FOR THAT because she is not fit for this position, AT ALL. This salon is very lucky they have grandfathered clients with their young children as well. I can't wait for this salon to have new owners and new stylist. SORRY but not sorry ! It IS NOT okay the salon does not care to make things right when it is clearly wrong. I will say the salon is clean, organized, and in a hell of a location. If you decide to be part of his experiment, SUERTE meaning good luck!!! I absolutely LOVE Portfolio Salon and would never think of going anywhere else! I have followed Adrian for years and was happy when he started at Portfolio. The location is fabulous! It's in the heart of Miracle Mile so even just arriving is a glamorous experience. The salon is always immaculately clean and absolutely gorgeous. The front desk staff is always friendly and helpful and there is always someone cleaning up behind the hairdressers. Upon entering I am always offered coffee or tea - such a small gesture is so greatly appreciated! Adrian is INCREDIBLE and the only person I trust with my hair. I've been a regular client since I was 18 and have tried to go other places in the interest of saving money, but have found myself going back just to have them fix what others have tried to unsuccessfully accomplish. Time and time again, I've learned the hard way that you get what you pay for. 1) If you need an EXCELLENT and FLAWLESS mani/pedi, go to Miya. She is also great about blending custom colors and coming up with unique manicures (check out my blog, bubblesandink.com for the vintage tuxedo manicure she did for me). 2) Carlos (a.k.a. Carlitos) is phenomenal with color, cuts, and styling in general. He's been just as fantastic with my 15-year-old sister as he's been with my mom, and, of course, me. :) 3) You just can't beat a glass of wine after a hard day while you're in the stylist's chair. I recently moved to Coral Gables and was looking to get my highlights retouched with a trim. This place had an opening on short notice (which should have been a clue?) which was great since I wanted to get my highlights done before the holidays. I booked a full head of highlights (I have thin, medium length hair with currently 3/4 head highlights so mostly root touch up) and a trim. I'll start by saying there was a language barrier so another employee translated what I wanted. Everything seemed to be communicated well and coloring process went fine. Musical chairs then began with three or four employees switching off to wash hair, apply toner, etc. that made it confusing. The shampooing and toner was sloppy, I'm talking water spraying everywhere and the clincher was when a blop of toner fell into my bc of messy application. Cue immediate burning, have to wash eye out in bathroom so I now have one eye with makeup on and one without When it came to the cut, A LOT more was taken off than the trim that was requested. I've also long gone to Aveda salons (one of the reasons I selected this place), but was disappointed that no Aveda products were used?? After washing, I expect to have product put in my hair - I usually use a blow dry protectant, a mousse pre-blow dry, then control force hairspray - but nothing was offered or used. Isn't that a normal part of cut and "style?" To be clear - color looks great and the stylist was very sweet, but overall it was just a bad, odd experience. My displeasure was obvious and I was a little surprised that they didn't offer to take anything off the bill. Definitely not worth $320! (I was quoted $175 on phone for highlights- so my cut and toner was $145?!) Alas the quest for a salon in Miami continues.... read more

On New Year's Eve day I arrived to my appointment for color correction (I will spare you the details but three prior hair disasters were now covered with a black/green box color). Because it was a crazy-busy day, and there was some confusion as to the process I had requested, my scheduled colorist could not do a correction (only highlights). As I was making my disappointment known and prepared to leave, the owner, Lilly, swooped in out of nowhere and said "Nope, not in my salon". She then proceeded to spend the next FOUR hours carefully stripping the layers of color on my head until I walked out with a head of perfect, buttery highlights. She even missed part of a family celebration to ensure that my hair was perfect before she left. I can't quite describe how pleased I am with my hair color and how very much I wish I had gone to Portfolio before the three salons that ruined my hair (and yes, the box dye from CVS). I am very picky about the tone and placement of my highlights (having even flown to NY on occasion to get them just right) and I can say that Portfolio is up there with the high-end national salons. It is difficult to do a cool, buttery blonde on a person with dark hair (as evidenced by the brassy or frosted heads walking around Miami) and Portfolio - especially Lilly - got it spot on. One more thing. I had a pedi done by Onyx and this is the first time - in years - that my feet have remained baby-smooth for a week. If you think your neighborhood nail salon is doing a good job - I mean, how much can a pedicure improve, right? Wrong. You're missing out. Superb work. I am in the process of scheduling a haircut and taking my mom in for color this week. I think I can finally say I've found my salon. read more

I came to Portfolio via a Couptessa voucher I purchased for a haircut & blow-dry. I was VERY impressed. My hair stylist was Kevin. He is very cute and sweet. he listenened to exactly what I wanted and when I asked him, he gave me his input on what he thought I should do. He took his time with me and my hair looked amazing when he was finished. This is the best haircut I have ever gotten. The place is very nice, very modern and classy. Everyone was very nice and professional. I would love to go back although I don't think that I am able to afford a haircut at this salon very often without a voucher. read more

I recently moved to Miami, and as any woman knows this causes stress to find someone new capable of keeping your hair looking up to your standards. I am extremely picky bc of the extreme processes i unleash on my hair on the regular. I did my research and found Kelly, she seemed knowledgeable about alternative hairstyles and color, but also in more natural and conservative styles as well. I hoped she could fix the disaster that was sitting on my head, it was grown out, faded, and alittle crispy (due to my own mistake). We sat down and she asked what I wanted to do with it, i simply told her "hair is not my medium, have fun, do whatever you want, but please just fix it!" She did just that, it's amazing how a great hair cut/color can make you feel like conquering the world. It's even more amazing to find a stylist that can achieve those results with out any direction given to go off of. I left ecstatic, with fresh color, baby soft locks, and an amazing new style. I cut and blow dry my hair with Carlos, he does wonders to my hair and keeps it healthy; and do my mani with Consuelo or Lili, and I usually do the normal nail polish which lasts for 10 days or so. I just had an unacceptable experience at La Bella Salon last week, of which I was a loyal client for 3 years and it sealed the deal that I would never go back. Luckily, the issue was the owner and the front desk, not my beloved stylist, Rosvelt, and he recommended this salon saying they're great and, specifically for my case, Fabian does fantastic work. OMG. I am almost happy the owner mistreated me at La Bella Salon or I never would've seen the inside of this place. It is *impeccably* clean, which is a vast difference from the previous salon. It is quiet and calm, again, a stark contrast. There were more clients in there today than on a busy day in La Bella Salon and it was so quiet and relaxing, I felt like at a spa, I forgot how getting your hair done isn't just a "must-do" for those of us with grays, but a lovely pampering experience! Everyone is very courteous and professional. Also, it's a full salon - mani/pedi (I only did my hair but they had a huge variety of Essie and OPI colours), they have a facial area in the back I didn't get to see (but will definitely be using in the future), and, it is just BEAUTIFUL. Fabian really listened to what I like for my hair and decided on what would be the best colour mix and plan to get me there and it's already been corrected quite a bit (among other things, La Bella Salon's attention to clients went down hill since they try to pack way too many people in, I didn't even realise how much colour correcting had to be done but Fabian thought of options to get me back to non-brassy roots rather than just copy/pasting the same routine as always). There's so much natural light, high ceilings, beautiful and simple decor, and it's all so well lit that the colour you see in the salon is actually the true colour of your hair since it's so bright with natural light - no risk of leaving the salon with what you think is one colour and getting home to a different one. My mum and I had that horrible experience last week and I literally left the salon crying because it was so uncalled for and out of the blue... now, I'm suddenly so happy it happened because it led me to this beautiful new experience. I had totally forgotten getting your hair done is an experience you're supposed to look forward to and enjoy rather than a chore and I really do look forward to my next visit here. read more

I love this place, I've been getting my hair cut here for years and I've never had a problem. It is pricey but totally worth it, all of the women in my house go here and love Carlos he's the best. He is very nice and fun to talk to, also the hair wash girls are adorable and super sweet. The only thing I ever have a problem with is the lack of a friendly atmosphere, Carlos is great and so are the hair wash girls but everyone else comes off a little stuck up. I come to Portfolio hair designers for my facials with Indira. I've been coming to her for more than a year and honestly I see a huge difference in my face with every visit. Given, I'm usually the one that takes forever to schedule my next appt which makes the process a bit more difficult but every time she works on my face I am at all with the results. Yes, it's pretty painful but so worth it. Especially the neck and face massage she gives after. I think that's what I look forward to the most. She also keeps it so peaceful which I need after along week of work. I have gone to varies places and most places put a timer and only give you one hour. Indira gives you the time you need and more . I wanted a retouch hair color using Aveda products and this salon claims to use them. When the stylist applied the color, I started to feel a big burning sensation on my scalp. The lady said it was normal and it was going to go away, "by the way this is a german line and not Aveda coloring product" The burning sensation lasted for 15 minutes and I was upset as I went there for a type of product and service I didn't receive. I've been coming to get my facials from Indira for a few months now and can't tell you how much I love it. My skin has completely transformed ever since coming to her. The entire process is very relaxing and is not as painful as one might believe, she is very gentle and make it very easy on you. All my friends have complimented my skin transformation and I am very happy with the results. My last session she switched up the treatments since I hardly had any acne and did something to work more on the acne scars so she structures her work around you as your skin changes.
