Portage Bakery is the best I have been to in a long time. I felt at home, and they took wonderful care of us. We had breakfast pastries and espresso. After having breakfast at a small local joint (see Cippy review), we just had to stop at this bakery after finding out that this was where they got their baked goods. It was right around the corner from Cippys. It was like heaven walking in their door! The sights and smells of a good Italian bakery welcome you immediately. There were at least 4 different cases of yummy sweet delights. They had a nice selection of cheeses, meats, and shelves of Italian groceries. Items you might not normally find in your local grocery stores. How about some baccala? The star of the show here is their bread. There's a separate room you enter to make your bread selections. Again, the smell!! I didn't see anyone entering that didn't leave with bread. We checked. This place is 26 miles from our house and requires making the trip across the border. This bakery is more than just a bakery, to me it's a destination that I will go to every time I visit Niagara Falls, Canada. This place is more an Italian deli/bakery where you will find a huge selection of Italian pasteries, cheeses, meats, breads and other products from Italy. In my area it's hard to find authentic Italian Bread that isn't mass produced in factories. For that reason when I go there I stock up. This is also where local restaurants get their breads and pastry. This is a must go place whenever you are in Niagara Falls, Canada. What a lovely find!! Thanks Yelpers!! Ironically I was originally looking for a grocery store and somehow the bakery popped up as a suggestion (likely bc it does serve as a small Italian market). We were super stoked as we were jet lagged from our overnight no sleep flights & needed caffeine. And how lovely to pair a delightful cappuccino with Italian pastries?! I was a big fan of the rum ball. Jen loved the baklava and Marissa liked the chocolate thumb print cookie. The cannoli sadly was meh... the candy hippo was sugar heaven and had to be eaten in nibbles throughout the day. We even found some star-shaped pastina that we used to have as kids... can't wait to make it back home. Highly recommend this delightful bakery / store. Ample free parking. While looking for a place to have lunch, we found this GEM! There is plenty of free parking on the outside. You enter through the back which goes right into the bakery section. We bought tons of fresh bread such as the white bread, hot cross buns, kaiser buns and on the recommendation of a staff member, we bought the cinnamon bread, which is great for french toast. In the next room, you turn right, and here they have a lot of things you can take home from pastas, sandwich fixings, preserves, etc. Since we had such a great time eating here, we bough their roasted red peppers, eggplants and spicy eggplants for our sandwiches at home. Next you can pick up a drink from the cooler before you walk past some wonderful baked goods and cheeses. Packaged cheese and meats are also available on this walk. Finally, you are greeted by a staff member who will take your sandwich order or your hot food order from the hot food table. Both times, we ordered sandwiches with 2 types of meat (2xcorned beef and 2xMontreal Smoked Meat are acceptable options) and 1 cheese. You can then add toppings on the sandwiches, we both got the roasted red peppers. I got the eggplants and she got the hot peppers. The spicy eggplant is very spicy. On your way out, you will see more food, cookies and pastries. We tried the chocolate chip cookies and they were melt in your mouth good. We also tried the almond croissant and some danishs which were also spot on. This place is a great place to get food for take out or groceries and I would definitely recommend. read more

Sadly.. thought an Italian bakery would do better but these were really thick and they put a maraschino cherry in it?? We were having a cheese and wine party in our hotel room and we were directed from the wine shop to this nice bakery. We needed some cheese, baguette and other goodies for the event. We walked from our hotel room so its not that far (bring your bags, they charge 5 cents each. ) The shop had a large selection of fresh breads, cheeses, cookies, pastries, and deli. They also had olives, and some nice hard salami and some Greek specialties. Good prices and fair! Not bad! The cheese, bread, salami and service were great. So great, I had to write a review. + Excellent Italian Bread - Prices I was in old Pete's Market one day (Niagara Falls, NY) and asked about where they get their bread from. You know, the one they would serve to you before your meal. The waitress said to me, "Portage Bakery over the river!". Imagine that, Dicamillo Bakery is right across the street from Pete's Market, and they got their bread delivered from Portage in Canada. That really speaks volumes, doesn't it? So whenever I'm in the area, I always pick up a couple Italian loaves of bread, $2.50 each. The presliced comes in two different thicknesses, regular and thick. I'm always amazed how fresh the bread stays either on our counter or in the freezer. It's really good quality. I appreciate the wide selection of various baked goods, breads and desserts, and how friendly the staff is at this place. There is also a deli meat/cheese counter. The only downside is that this place is a little pricey. But then again, all bakeries seem to be raising their prices higher and higher these days. read more

I found this place while searching the internet. I really don't know the area very well but while driving down Lundy Lane, I remembered reading about this cute Italian Bakery so I stopped. Definitely more of a bakery than a café. I stopped for the first visit and picked up some random items and so far everything is delicious. I couldn't believe the fresh bread rack and the prices were reasonable along with all the desserts looked so good. I had to indulge in cannoli, cookies and cream puffs. I want to say thank you to Nadia for going beyond the expected customer service yesterday for me. Nadia made my Mother's Day yesterday. My mom is 99 years old and because of Nadias kindness she enjoyed a delicious Italian sandwich. This may seem like a small thing but during these very tough lockdowns and restrictions it's the small acts of kindness that will get us all through this pandemic. The residency my Mother lives in is currently in lockdown and myself and my husband are in quarantine and we cannot leave our home. If you venture just outside the tourist area of Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, ON Canada you'll easily find this local gem. They have off street parking so no need to worry about paying for that again either. We stopped for breakfast on a Friday morning and as soon as we left were already thinking about when we could go back. Strong fresh brewed coffee, an amazing selection of biscotti, pastries, cookies, and a full service deli. Since it was early morning we didn't get a sandwich but they looked great and we could have ordered one to go if we had wanted. Service was very friendly, employees made great suggestions for us (cappuccino and breakfast pizza). Also had a very nice seating area. I read in other reviews there was no seating, but the employee we spoke with said the dining area has been there since before she had, and she's been with them 8 years. It was a pleasant surprise to be able to eat in. We live about 45 minutes away from the Falls and visit the area a few times a year - I can't believe we've only just discovered this place! read more

I've been buying bread here since first discovering the bakery in the late 90's. There's classic Imported Italian foods and deli meats and cheeses as well as a cozy cafe corner to enjoy fresh made sandwiches and espresso. Plenty of dessert choices including your fabourite cookies, napoleons and more. Everything is reasonably priced. I needed a birthday cake for my nieces 3rd birthday. The only awesome I got from my niece was that her favorite cake flavor was raspberry. I called portage and told them I needed a cake for 8-10 people for a 3 year old first birthday, and that it needed a raspberry flavor to it. The woman on the phone suggested a vanilla cake with raspberry filling and whipped cream frosting. The cake it was adorable, with a sort of quilted design on top and boy was it a hit! My niece loved the raspberry filling. She ate all of her raspberry filling before anything else! All the adults loved it too. My Dad even said he wanted that exact same cake for his birthday. Wonderful Italian bakery, deli, and coffeshop. They make an insane amount of bread, have a large assortment of cookies and pastries, as well as cheeses, meats, and they made me a killer Americano with steamed milk. The folks working there were super friendly and helpful, even as I walked around with my family of five, picking out various things and pointing out the back room cafe area where we had a nice quiet place to sample some of our purchases. When it came to bread in Niagara Falls you were a DiCamillo's or Trusello's family. The Trusello's folks needed to find a new place when it closed. They found their place in Portage Bakery. NOTE: This is not NYC/NJ Italian Semolina bread, but a larger loaf that makes for great sandwich bread. My family rolls across the bridge and buys 10 loaves to freeze for the month. Along with the full service Bakery there are Italian groceries, a cournicoppa of meats and cheeses, a deli, frozen section, coffee and espresso, a gorgeous hot table and a café where you can enjoy eating and watching this establishment tick. Quite a pleasant surprise! The Bakery actually has a small market and deli within it selling all kinds of unique and imported finds.
