The "Big Boots" are a must see in the Cheyenne Depot Plaza! Around the world, the very name Cheyenne conjures up images of cowboys, rodeos, trains, and the great outdoors. Today's Cheyenne is all of that and more! You can tour Cheyenne's wonderful scenery with the very great: CHEYENNE STREET RAILWAY TROLLEY!!! Such fun all around. I really love this mystical, wild west touch! Such a blessing to really experience the love up close and just escape into this gorgeous town. The Curt Gowdy State Park features approximately 32 miles of beautiful hiking trails. Trails range from easy to expert. Trail guides are available upon entrance to the park!!

The centerpiece is the former Union Pacific Depot, constructed in the late 1880s. Designed by architect Henry Van Brunt, the heavy sandstone structure and its 120-foot clock tower remain the defining architectural landmark of the city. Fully restored and designated a National Historic Landmark, it stands as a grand reminder of the transcontinental railroad era that birthed Cheyenne. Inside, the Cheyenne Depot Museum details the rail history of the American West with historical artifacts and an extensive model railroad layout. We did not buy tickets for the full exhibit hall, choosing instead to check out the gift shop and poke around the main lobby. While we were walking through, a young girl was holding her birthday party right there in the historic lobby. It was sweet, charming, and just a tiny bit melancholy. There was nothing wrong with the party itself, which was a perfectly nice family gathering. It was simply the realization that in Cheyenne, a National Historic Landmark double-hats as a primary venue for an eight-year-old's birthday cake. It felt like a wonderfully authentic, highly specific snapshot of local life. The outdoor plaza is a clean brick square that hosts community gatherings and live music during the warmer months. On a quiet afternoon, it is a pleasant spot to walk around, admire the stone masonry, and absorb a bit of Western history without having to work particularly hard for it. Cheyenne is a small city with an easygoing pace that seems to have completely avoided the invention of modern urgency. The Depot building itself is magnificent, but the overall plaza experience is a thirty-minute pit stop rather than a reason to book a trip. If you are already traveling through southern Wyoming, it is well worth pulling off the highway to take a look. Just do not expect a sprawling tourist district once you get there.

The staff is super friendly and will give you information on the mansion. You are allowed to walk the interior and do a self guided tour and take photos. I love the retro furniture and learning the history of the area and people that have served Wyoming and lived in the home. A few pictures are being uploaded to peak your curiosity but I don't want to give away too much. Go for a tour and take some photos of your own!

Free to the public, you should really consider making a small donation if you visit. The tour is self-guided and we had the place to ourselves. Every room was well appointed with period furniture-- well it was a Governors house after all. The laundry room was interesting, as was the fallout shelter, for those of us who lived through the 60s. I'm glad we had a chance to visit and "see how some politicians might have lived".

The monument is quite large and can make for some cool photos against the Wyoming sky. There's a placard with information about the Ames brothers and the transcontinental railroad. There's another brother's face on the other side, so give him some love.

There really aren't many trees in southeastern Wyoming so this one is really interesting. "Discovered" by the Union Pacific rail workers when the tracks were laid through here in 1867, they actually moved the line sideways to avoid it. The railroad was eventually moved south, and the old road bed past Tree in the Rock was used as a wagon trail, then as the Lincoln Highway, and now as Interstate 80. The freeway splits around the tree, which has its own little parking area in the median and a spiky fence to protect it. It's called simply "Tree Rock" by its unromantic modern sign, which notes that "Limber Pines can live as long as 2000 years." It's a quick stop that will take you less than five minutes to explore. We were driving north on I-25 and I noticed the location on google maps, just south of Wyoming on the east side of I-25. I was looking for a little diversion so we took the frontage road drive off the highway to check it out. It gave us an opportunity to google and read up on the historical battle (?) that took place here. It's neat to see the terrain and imagine all those years ago as people tried to navigate their lives and this land. The rock formations are certainly pretty cool to look at. After reading about what happened there, I was surprised at the lack of space in this "natural fort". I'm glad we saw it and read about it. I wish we could have continued on north on the frontage road to get back on I-25 but google maps told us to do a 180 & drive south the way we came from to get back on the highway.

There are several formations but only a couple are accessible from the dirt road that leads to it. The remaining are beyond a fence on private property. It's unfortunate that the locals have let this site go to waste along with letting kids ruin it with spray paint and garbage.

Not notified in person, phone, or email about broken pipe and office worker was perturbed about being questioned blamed it on base commander. Bring your quarters pay laundry. The other bases we have stayed at it was free. This campground looks like the neglected stepchild down a dirt road without good signage.
