If you have never had Mauritian cuisine, you are in for a treat…read more Le Mauritius - and the cognate Ile Reunion restaurants in the neighborhood, are some of the most interesting eating in Paris. * * * Mauritius is an African island nation in the Indian Ocean. Most of its historic trade patterns have been with India. The majority of the population is of mixed local-Indian descent. Not surprisingly, the cuisine is a mix of local and Indian descent. * * * Western colonialists installed sugar plantations on the island. This means the main local alcoholic beverage is rum. (Mauritius did not inherit India's distaste for alcoholic beverages.) Local artisanal rum is a thing. Infused rum is a thing. Rum drinks are absolutely fantastic. They do a coconut rum punch here that is an absolute world beater. The recipe is really simple. Take coconut milk. Mix with enough rum so it goes down easy. That means just a whole lot of rum. This is one of the sweetest and most potent alcoholic beverages you will ever have in your life. Bartender - bring me another thirty eight of those! * * * Mauritian food does a lot of beignets - which is their take on an Indian samosa. They also do a lot of hot sauces - which the Indians do too. The frying is wonderful regardless of what goes into your beignet. The sauces are to absolutely die for. The most unforgettable sauce is a standard one that you can make at home. Everyone makes this at home in Mauritius. They call it Piment but it is also Sauce Crazy. It is simply mashed up super-hot green chiles with mashed up green apple. You can add other stuff if you want - like salt or liquid. But the paste should be thick like horseradish. It should blow the top of your head off. It is INSANELY GOOD. Beignets that were already the stuff of legend went up to Valhalla with Piment Crazy on them. Rice and beans became a meal to remember forever with Piment Crazy on them. I was in heaven. * * * The main dish was a fish curry. It was mild but majorly majorly savory. It would have been absolutely terrific with Piment Crazy - and there was Piment Crazy in a bowl on my table. But the preparation straight out of the kitchen was too good to mess with. The accompaniment was rice and beans. The rice and beans DID get the sauce crazy. * * * Dessert was good here but would have been much much better in Mauritius itself. It was a coconut cake served with an English custard sauce. England was the last colonial power to rule over Mauritius. The British maintained slave plantations in Mauritius and were otherwise terrible overlords. But they did leave a tradition of English desserts as a modest and inadequate compensation. The coconut cake uses vast amounts of coconut. For a Global North setting - the coconut was not terrible. But anyone who has had fresh coconut just knocked off a tree in the tropics knows that coconuts put in a boat and shipped to Europe or the United States just aren't as good as the fresh local thing. I have had fresh coconut desserts in Brazil. Putting that amazing coconut in the Mauritian recipe with custard sauce And it would have been absolutely pure and unmitigated pleasure. * * * Still this was an utterly amazing meal. Five stars all the way and I want to go back. More so - I want to actually go to the Isle of Mauritius itself. The cooking at Paris's Le Mauritius is totally fantastic. Combine that level of amazing cooking with fresh tropical ingredients? I can't imagine food that would be any better. But if you are in Paris - Grab every opportunity you can to eat at Le Mauritius. You won't get food like this at home.

The restaurant was still empty at the time we got there and pretty much stayed that way the whole meal, as there was only 1 other table occupied the whole evening. My friend and I had picked this restaurant because the cuisine was quite different from a lot of the other restaurants we typically frequent in Paris (sushi, Thai, Italian, etc.) and we wanted to feel like we were taking a bit of a culinary voyage without actually leaving Paris. We were not disappointed! I ordered the sausage stew, which was very flavorful and hearty, perfect for the dismal weather that evening. My friend got a chicken curry, which she really enjoyed. In addition to mains, we ordered 1 appetizer each; I got the vegetable beignets and my friend got the cod fritters. I tried the cod fritters and ended up preferring them to my own appetizer, as they were really savory and flavorful. For dessert we ordered a banana flambé and a baked Alaska. These were probably the part of the meal we liked the least. The banana tasted too strongly if alcohol in the end, so my friend only found up nibbling a bit of it. The baked Alaska was less alcohol-tasting but overall seemed to be just a scoop of ice cream set briefly aflame. The server made an effort to keep the flames going for us to take pictures which was super sweet. The ambiance of the restaurant could have beeb improved; at the time we were there, the restaurant looked like it was half packed up, with boxes and chairs stacked in the middle if the dining area. It would probably be nicer to eat outside when the weather is nice. Overall, a cool place to get some unique cuisine in Paris.

This…read moreis a restaurant run and staffed by people from Madagascar, Mauritius, and Reunion who should not be confused by Cajuns (who happen to be French speaking exiles in Louisiana from Eastern Canada). A basic history lesson (or perhaps Google) can provide a basic understanding of what "Creole" really means, which on a very basic level means the mix of European colonists, indigenous, and/or enslaved populations. . If what you're looking for deep fried gator tail, or gumbo, clearly you should not be eating here. The staff here are friendly and treat guests like family, the food is superb, the ambiance is totally unique, and when you mix it all together you have one of the most sublime dining experiences in Paris. The creole cooking here blends French, South Asian, African, and East Asian into a delectable melange that is a treat for the adventurous palate. Try the goat, gambas, curried chicken, spicy beef, shark, or pretty much anything on the menu! The food is flavorful and fresh, so there's really no bad choice. Save room for dessert though because the coconut and the passion fruit tarts are delicious. Also be warned that you will have to be patient because there are basically 4 people working the entire restaurant floor. This isn't necessarily a bad thing because for all the waiting you may have to do, you will be given loads and loads of complimentary drinks and fresh fruit, and be drawn into an impromptu dance session. One of the best dining experiences of my life!

The richness of the flavor and the texture which is not reminiscent of the traditional roasted duck or foie gras, but rather a much more like a luxurious and indulgent version. We enjoyed our dinner on the outside of the restaurant after about a 20-30 minute wait. The bone marrow had the best flavor I've experienced for the dish. However, it is definitely overshadowed by the rich flavor of the foie gras. This experience was unforgettable, with our view of Parisian streets on a brisk, April night. We even came back on our last night, but didn't realize the hours on Google maps was for the deli. The restaurant closes earlier, before 9:00 PM. This meal got us thinking about Paris in a positive light, and we hope to be able to come back to eat the amazing dishes again!

Our server was very attentive to us and helped us decide on our dinner orders. Similar to the other restaurants though. After our food was delivered, it was far in between when we were checked on again. And after dessert it took even longer for our server to bring the bill. Overall, the food was a letdown. I do not exaggerate when I say that the frog legs just tasted like slightly flavored water. My friend's ravioli had a fairly decent flavored sauce but the pasta was a bit chewy. My friend's duck breast was pretty tough; I had noticed the table next to us also ordered it and they seemed to have trouble finishing/cutting theirs as well. As for my steak with foie gras, well the steak was once again tough and the foie gras was weirdly stringy. It was soft for the most part but there were parts that were tough and stringy. Maybe that's a section that's generally separated in the preparation process and it was missed? In any case it was disappointing. What wasn't disappointing was dessert though; perfectly sweet and balanced.
