I am not sure how I first found them, but I've followed Out in the Garden Nursery for a couple…read moreyears now. In February, they have Hellebore Days on weekends (also open by appointment), where you can peruse over 40 varieties of Hellebores. Ahhh! I am always itching to get out in the garden (no pun intended!) this time of year, but it is so early and many nurseries aren't even open yet. Here, though, they are celebrating many of the most special winter blooming beauties. They are located fairly far from my home, so I called before heading out and the owner picked up right away and happily answered my questions about prices and what she currently had in stock. And she was just as lovely in person! I was interested in a particular variety of hellebore which she found for me, then directed me to some others that had a similar look. Then I just had a wander around and pretty quickly fell in love with several other plants. They have a beautiful display garden along with a sweet corgie, friendly tortie kitty, and even the teeniest most adorable little serama chickens. I could have spent hours there! I ended up with a couple hellebores, a unique and new-to-me variety of Sweet Box, a beautiful and incredibly fragrant witch hazel (in addition to the hellebores, they had the largest variety of witch hazels I have ever seen) and a nice size Chinese Paperbush that I just could not walk away from (if you know anything about them she is Akebono and she is gorgeous!). I left behind a purple daphne that I'm still kicking myself about. They have a wide variety of plants, but they do seem to have special love for the more shade tolerant and/or fragrant varieties. Prices on all were good to excellent. I believe they had three designated parking spots, but there was another grassy section that appeared to be used for overflow parking, and I wouldn't expect them to get super busy anyways (although by the time I left there were several other customers there). This was such a great little nursery and an absolute pleasure to shop, I will absolutely be back.

I live in Portland so I took a little drive there and what a beautiful selection of annuals and perrenials. The staff is super friendly and I've gone back a couple of times as they have a unique selection of plants.

They have no advertising or signage up, thus when I arrived I thought maybe they were wholesale only. But it's hard to deter me from plants so I marched on in, and the lovely woman who greeted me was friendly and helpful as could be, confirming they were open to the public and handing off a box to fill with treasures. They also have handy wagons available. The nursery is very large, and every time I thought I'd seen everything the next corner would reveal another greenhouse. I quickly filled a box with herbs of every sort, then another with healthy perennials, strawberries, and even a mix of daffodils and narcissus. Oh, and don't forget they have houseplants! I got so much good stuff, but a few favorite finds were peonies, bleeding hearts, astilbe, purple basil, salad burnet, Vietnamese coriander, lemon verbena, Labrador violets, eucalyptus, hardy ferns, and lantana. They are cash or check only, so come prepared. It's worth going a little (or a lot!) out of your way if you usually only utilize card payments. The prices are eminently reasonable, and they even offer discounts on flats. Oh, and they are well known for their fabulous hanging baskets!

This place was packed, and while the parking near the front of the retail space may fill, thankfully if you venture just a little further on you'll find another area. They had a great mix of plants, leaning most heavily on annuals and more houseplants than I would have expected. Noteable finds were a variety of daphne, big beautiful gallon size dahlias, a good range of smaller perennials (I snatched up three varieties of dianthus!) and herbs, large and inexpensive violas, and beautiful rex begonias. I also spotted a very large pineapple guava and nice size azaleas. Of course, they had the requisite hanging baskets too. Again, this place was really busy, but there were plenty of employees to assist, and I even saw one make sure an older waiting customer was okay, offering a chair as she'd been standing for a while. All the customers here seemed especially happy and excited. It was a fun place to shop alongside them. The only negative I can give is that many people had wagons and there is no extra space to pass two wagons along the same row in the greenhouses, but everyone was so darn courteous it was not a big deal. They also had flat boxes conveniently placed around and I would opt to just carry a box around if you can.
