When I am in charge of outings, it is my mission to find the best local place around. I've been twice recently: once before a day at Rickwood Caverns, and more recently as a lunch break in the area. I don't think there was anything that didn't get great reviews. This is *NOT* just your typical pulled pork on a bun BBQ place. Can't think of a better way to say it other than "elevated." It really is a smokehouse as all their menu items are built on meats they've smoked and imagined into everything you love. I got the Philly, and it was such a treat! Super tender meat, and a great bun. Looked like it would be crunchy/dense, but it was soft and squishy and oh-so-good. Their fries are peppered so forwarning if that's not your thing. The Reuben came on a great marble rye. Again, their own smoked meats made this a sandwich I didn't offer to share even though others at the table were sampling and sharing and passing things around. Nope, all mine. The Porky was ginormous. My college student has recently taken an affinity to lots of extra sauces and flavors on his sandwiches, and this certainly fit the bill. It had four different meats, slaw, and sauce. Quite the show stopper. The side of mac and cheese had extra shredded on top. There probably is not a single thing on the menu that isn't a good choice. So if you have the opportunity to go, do. If you see their food truck, stop. And if you hear that they are catering an event, know that your hosts must love you. read more

I met up with family to have dinner at Porkys. We arrived about 6:30 to a very busy spot, we got the last table that could accommodate the group of 5 (3 adults and 2 kids). The waitress was fairly quick to get over and take drink orders and then back for the food order. Unfortunately. After we ordered it took a good hour + to get our food. I don't mind waiting for a bit for quality food made to order but this was over an hour. Also many tables got their food ahead of us but came in well after we did. Once the food showed up it was really good. I had the pork plate with baked beans and potato salad, very tasty. The ambiance was a but crowded and unorganized but they somehow make it work. Saw Porky's food truck menu on the Birmingham Restaurant Week and felt the need to try their brisket. It took us three tries on two separate nights, but we finally tracked them down at Good People's tonight. Ordered the restaurant week menu of dinner for two with pork nachoes, turkey plates, and dessert. We also bought an additional pound of brisket, a pint of mac & cheese, and a pint of baked beans. The one thing that popped for us out of these was the nachoes....the nachoes were awesome. The chips are BBQ-flavored thick chips that's super flavorful and crunchy on it's own....really provided a great foundation for all the toppings they loaded onto it. This food truck came and visited our neighborhood yesterday and we decided to check it out. I'm glad we did! The wait wasn't too long for our food, and the employees were friendly. The food - great. I debated on what to get, as everyone knows how much I love smoked wings, but they convinced me to go with the tacos as they have won several taco competitions in Birmingham recently. Surprising for a BBQ place, I know, but it's true. The BBQ Hot Tacos were flat out amazing - I got the brisket, of course. And not spicy at all to me. I could have turned the heat up a little. The bbq pork nachos my wife ordered were great as well. Very much more of an authentic experience vs the ballpark style nachos that other places serve. The grilled zucchini was good, but could have used more salt. We were very happy they came to our neighborhood. Hopefully they'll be back soon! read more

This food truck catered our wedding and they are amazing! The catering value is absolutely unmatched. We ordered bbq turkey and pork and several sides. It was so good and perfect for a reception at Avondale! So now the food truck.... I was in love with the truck before the I even knew that catering was an option. There pimento cheese burger is to die for. Absolutely delicious! My mom happened to be in town before the catered event and tried a hard-to-find Reuben sandwich (corned beef and sauerkraut). She's a Reuben connoisseur and said it's one of the best she's ever had! I love this food truck and jump at the opportunity to get the burger when I'm at Avondale. read more

I had the brisket plate with fries and vinegar slaw along with a local blonde ale. Absolutely the most delicious and amazing brisket I've ever had. I've had a lot of brisket. The fries are easily top three of all time and the slaw is absolute perfection! My friend had the smoked turkey plate with the same sides and it was very tender, juicy and delicious. That brisket though! Service was superb and I absolutely loved the atmosphere. Laid back and seriously casual. Sorry for not taking pics as we were in a little rush and had been on the road for almost seven hours. I'll be back every time I come home going forward. Great job guys! read more

First thing a BBQ restaurant is judged on is their pulled pork. The pork here is not pulled it is chopped up so much it's like baby food mush. No outside bark no little bits of fat just Blah. Mack and cheese was great though. read more

This place was a welcome stop on our trip back to Indiana from Gulf Shores. The food was so very good! We loved that they had two coleslaw options--my husband loves vinegar and I love creamy. The mac and cheese was delicious, and their red BQ sauce was a great balance. They also have a more vinegary sauce that my husband really liked. The guy waiting on us did an amazing job during peak lunch rush on Sunday. He was patient and kind, and was hustling to take care of people. We way prefer a place like this to anything found in a shopping center. Be aware the inside area is a little limited for rush--maybe 15-20 tables? They do have 3-4 tables that can seat 6-8 each, and I think the rest were 4-seaters. But they also have a bar-type seating that accommodates people as well. We're always hunting for good BBQ down here and I'm so glad to add this to our list of must-stops! read more

Porky's is the place to go if you're craving comfort food that's savory, satisfying, and welcoming. Both the food and the service were excellent when I visited for a lunch. I got the Pepper Jack Cheese Sticks as an appetizer, and they were amazing. The BBQ ranch and cotija cheese enhanced the flavor even further--crispy, cheesy, and utterly delicious--while the sweet hot BBQ seasoning gave a special bite. I ordered the Chicken Tender Basket for my entrée, which includes Texas toast, a side of fries, and five tenders that are delightfully crispy. The tenders had just the right amount of crunch on the outside and moist on the inside, making them the perfect combination for a traditional chicken tender dinner! My favorite dipping sauce is their zesty ranch, but for added variation, they also have buffalo sauce and honey mustard. Everyone was kind, considerate, and made sure I had everything I needed, which made for excellent service. It's a terrific place to eat in or get takeaway because of its relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Porky's is a hidden treasure that merits greater recognition. This small storefront barbecue restaurant is amazing! A quick warm welcome followed by prompt service yielded fabulous food in very generous portions. We had pimento cheese app which came with toasted pita triangles. This could have been lunch for two of us but we had already ordered brisket sandwiches. The brisket is wonderful, the sides were great ( potato salad and baked beans. Driving through the area I saw this place and thought when I came back through I should check it out. Best decision I made today!!! Greeted upon walking through the doors the let me know I could sit anywhere and they had a menu right out to me and my drink order was taken. Menu isn't huge, but plenty of BBQ favorites to choose between. All of the sandwiches come with one side. I went with the classic pork sandwich (plain - no BBQ and no pickle) so I could experience the smoked pork without any additional tastes. Food was served quick and looked amazing! A little surprised that the sandwich was served on Texas style toast with a heaping helping of pork. First bite I was immediately happy that I had everything on the side...pork was so good. Light smoky flavor without a single trace of fat. Seriously, the entire sandwich, not a single taste of fat. I did add a little BBQ just so I could try it, and it was equally amazing, but totally not needed. Fries were string style (not my favorite), but the best string style I've ever had. Seasoned with salt and pepper and dipped in the BBQ sauce, so good! Also, if you're a fan of local B'ham breweries, they have a great selection from favorites in the area. Décor is also really awesome. They have Alabama and that other school that's in the state plastering the walls to go along with some really cool music concert posters that include Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters and 311 (stuff that either has Pigs or Cows on it). Really glad that I stopped in this place, and to be honest I think I may drive here to get food even though it's about 40 minutes away. Found myself out in this area today and in need of some food. When you're this far out in the country the options can be few and far between. I knew I didn't want fast food, so I stopped into this bbq place and gave it a shot. Glad I did. You know...most bbq places claim to be the best, and they've all got their supporters who'll tell you that their local place is amazing. As we all know, sometimes the food doesn't live up to the hype. In this case, it did. I kept it simple and ordered the pulled pork plate with cheese grits and mashed potatoes. My friend ordered some pulled pork tacos. From the flavors, to the quality of the ingredients to the presentation, it was good all around. None of this dry, stringy pork that needs to be slathered in sauce just to be palatable. No. The pork was juicy, tender and fresh and could have been eaten on its own without any sauce. It wasn't chopped too finely and it cut with a fork no problem. Really good stuff that's on par with Saw's and Jim N Nicks in Bham. Totally exceeded my expectations. Another thing to note is that they don't just have 1 sauce. They've got a variety of them. So if you like the light, vinegar based kind, they've got it. If you like a thicker more traditional type, or a white sauce, they've got it. So it's easy to get your meal exactly the way you want. The service was good. No empty glasses, no long waits for food, and friendly people who seemed to know the menu inside and out. The space is open, well laid out, nicely decorated with plenty of seats and a few nice sofas in one corner in case you want to kick back on the sofa and eat there instead of at a table. Good beer selection. Lots of Bham brews. Good people, Avondale, etc. Overall a really good spot with good prices and better than you might expect food. I'm not on that side of town often, but I think this is one of those places that I'll have to stop for any time I'm near it. read more

My pork plate was really good! I enjoyed the cheesy grits but didn't care for the slaw, it was too vinegary for me.
