You leave feeling accomplished after a thorough workout while dancing to great songs. I wasn't sure what to expect when I came here. It was a bit confusing trying to find the studio. When you enter from street level, you have to go downstairs towards the Underground Dance Studio. You can either dance barefoot or with shoes (wish they could make a rule about which one because my feet always get dirty). The class starts off with some warm up dances and then moves through different types of styles of dancing with each song change. You get to express yourself however you want to. You don't have to do every single move the same way and they encourage movement around the floor. Thankfully there are a bunch of fans around the room because by the 3rd song I'm always sweating. There are no official breaks so step off the dance floor and get water as necessary. Class ends with some stretching and warm cloths with some sort of essential oil. I can't wait til the next class!

I figured I would just try this place out since it was quite close to my home and it had good reviews. I was pleasantly surprised at how cheerful and upbeat all the instructors are (I tried Zumba/Hiphop and More than Dance classes and probably have been in classes with 5 different instructors (depending on the day/time you choose to go). What I can say is that all the instructors are have their own styles but are definitely wonderful and will keep you happily dancing. What I particularly like about this place is the christmas lighting and the setting that makes you not feel so self-conscious about what you are doing wrong or how terrible of a dancer you may think you are. I admit that I'm not a naturally good dancer and I have a good time everytime I go there. There are, of course, some people there who can dance like rock stars and look really cool when they dance. However, the instructors there are very encouraging and provide guidance what you can do as a beginner, intermediate or advanced dancers, so you can really just do things at your own level and not care so much about others. It definitely feels liberating to just be able to dance your own style, at your own pace/level, and nobody is judging you on how you look or how weird you dance :). After the package ran out, I ended up signing up for more classes and still go there whenever I find some free time.

So many wonderful people who support each other and have a blast, while getting a great workout. Her words and style should not reflect in the place and owners. I just emailed them with questions about a program which is relatively new. I was given prompt, useful informaiton. I thought that the fun factor would cancel out feeling the burn, but dayam, this was work. I took the Egyptian-style belly dancing class, the first class in their 5-week series. My glutes. My hammies. Every muscle in my arm. Some muscle in my upper abs that apparently don't get used on a normal basis. They all moved...and I got into it. Our instructor was fantastic, making sure to accommodate those with injuries, explaining the muscles being stretched or used. She was hands-on, too, making adjustments to people's postures. $15 to drop in or $12 per class with the series via cash or check. Street parking. Reasons to buy fun costumes and props imminent.

The combinations given were appropriate to the level, corrections were given with care, and I felt truly like the instructor and other students danced for the love of movement, not to compare. There was zero body shaming or body-image focused corrections (if I have to hear "suck in your stomach" one more time from a well meaning but poorly educated instructor...) I came out of the classes feeling challenged (there was some tricky footwork in those allegro combos!) but satisfied -- and that is the hallmark of an amazing class. I also want to say that despite me being a temporary student and a newbie, I was welcomed very warmly by both the instructor and other students as well!

Come dance the night away with us! What a cool place to learn a little bit of Salsa and dance till…read morethe AM's. I've only been here on Saturdays for their Social Dance. It's always a good time. They teach a little 1 hour lesson from 8:30 to 9:30 and then open up the dance floor until 2 AM. You can learn some basic steps to get your started but don't expect to know Salsa after one mini lesson. :) As a follow, it was enough to just have a good time that night. The later you come, the more veteran and experienced dancers you'll meet. Many beginners come dance for the first hour or so and then leave. On Saturdays, the Bachata room is also open down the hall. A much smaller room but that's enough. The entrance fee of $20 gets you into both rooms. (Intro lesson is $5 extra). It's great being able to go back & forth between the rooms. There is a bar that you can buy drinks. You are allowed to bring your own water bottles but you have to leave it up at the front entrance because they don't allow you to bring your own bottles in due to the bar. Sometimes they even have performances from dance groups on Saturday nights. They also have practice sessions on weeknights that you can join and check out. With what little dance experience I've had over the last 2 months, Century definitely feels like "the place to be" if you want to dance the night away. Because of that though, Saturday Socials feels more like a show/a place to show off rather than a place to practice so just be prepared for that kind of atmosphere. Parking can be difficult since it's Cap Hill. Most people park at the parking garage down the street. **I'm not going to fault Century for this but this is something for women to take note of - not all men here are as respectful as you'd want them to be. Watch out for their hands and unwanted advances. Sometimes you really have to set your boundaries clearly because some people will def. take advantage of a friendly dancer.**

The space has great floors, walls of mirrors, and as a visiting dancer I felt welcome. There were beginners and advanced dancers - all friendly, and it seemed a lot of instructors were in the mix too. Great connection with WCS leads AND WCS follows, so I got my dance fix away from home for sure. Salsa leads covered On1 and On2, and it seemed the bachata leads were esp sweet/ generous, certainly patient with yours truly (not my forte). As a woman it felt a very safe environment and I'd love to go back. Super fun, thank you SCT and Seattle dancers!

Telling my friend that she "looks suspicious" because of a mistake that could have been addressed respectfully and humanely, without immediately making assumptions about her character or intentions. 2. The woman at the front desk repeatedly ignoring me while I was respectfully asking her a question something anyone could have asked her. There was absolutely no reason for her to treat someone she didn't know that way. To me, it felt like she had already formed a judgment about me before I even spoke. 3. Being agressive towards us, Saying you would call the police on two Black women, especially in the current political climate we all live in. You are fully aware of the fear and trauma that can come with that kind of threat for Black people. There were other ways this situation could have been handled. 4. NO. That is simply not what happened. You said I was told not to go in and that I refused to listen. That is not my behavior at all. I dismissed myself from the conversation and went to get in line. You then told me that you did not feel safe with me going inside and that you needed to call security first. I immediately stepped away from the line and waited for you to tell me when I could go in. Yet you continue to portray me as someone who refused to follow your direction. That is simply not what happened. Once again a pre-judgment you all have in your mind. 5. And honestly, if we were two White women, I genuinely believe this situation would have been handled differently--even if they had displayed the exact same behavior. There's also something else that stood out to me. I'm not sure if the woman at the front desk has had other Black women stay after class, but while I was paying for my class, she asked me, "You're only taking one class, right?" That question felt strange to me because of the assumption it seemed to carry about a random Black woman who was simply signing up for a class. And FYI, for someone who supposedly will never come back to take classes here again because of this experience, I'm not an expert at this dance style, but I've had experiences where a leader turned me incorrectly or didn't lead the move well, even when, as a follower, I felt I understood the move. Yet I continued to see the same people attending those classes, and no one was asking them to leave or telling them they didn't belong in the intermediate class. I'm not an expert at this dance style, but I can tell you that many of us in those intermediate classes are beginners. It is a mixture of beginners and intermediate dancers. So I have to ask: where was the co-owner then? Why weren't many of us asked to leave that class and go to a beginner class instead? If you have a policy, apply it consistently, to everyone, in every class, regardless of who they are Or what they look like in your eyes. I wish the business the best. As a White-owned business, I'm sure you'll continue to thrive regardless of my review. Bless.

I like it so much I drive down from Snohomish on a regular basis to take class. I've been taking tap at VAM from Mark for 5 years now. He is extremely welcoming, and one of the nicest human beings you will meet! As a more advanced adult tap dancer, it can be hard to find a studio that can continue to challenge you. And challenge me Mark does! I am humbled to be able to take class from someone who trained under the masters, and really is a master himself! His historical knowledge of tap dance is priceless and I love hearing his stories. All these years later, Mark will still pull out steps/patterns I've never seen before. No two classes are the same! And most importantly he makes class fun and is extremely skilled at "teaching to the room", making sure everyone present is being challenged at their level. Proof of all of this can be seen in the vast array of adults who come to take tap dance here - all ages and skill levels! In true "drop-in" format as well, which is very conducive to adult schedules (no feeling like you'll be behind because you missed the previous week). Veronica and the rest of the staff are super kind as well. I've always felt welcome walking in the door. Their annual showcases are also very fun to be a part of. If you are unsure, definitely give VAM a try! I'm willing to bet they have a class/level for you.
