I used to fish off of the rocks during high tide with my dad right next to the fort. We caught delicious mackerel. While I don't do that as an adult, I explore the fort, climb around on the rocks and enjoy the small beach area just as I did when I was a kid. It's not too big and not to small of an area. We love it. The fort is just so amazing and fascinating and while it was never battle tested, there's still so much to learn about the "why". They have done a great job adding displays with historical facts. I am so glad that it's not been vandalized like some of the other forts in Southern Maine/NH. Although some of the smaller fort nooks do smell like urine...ugh. Parking can be a challenge on weekends in the summer, and in some cases you might not be able to find a spot. We usually like coming here in the spring - April and in the fall - September. Bring bug spray or covering for your head and skin - the biting flies are aggressive!!!

This park is the home to an…read moreunfinished pre Civil war fort that was built to protect shipbuilding in Bath and trade to Augusta. There are lots of great nooks and crannies to investigate. The tiny parking lot can be frustrating at times but that is just the way it has to be with such a limited space. No dogs are allowed in the fort, but the parking lot allows access to the beach in front of Spinneys which allows leashed dogs even during the summer! That being said, I beg dog owners to keep your pooch on a leash and pick up their waste so we don't blow a good thing!!!

The introductory video is informative, and the museum hosts a number of artifacts excavated from the site. The ruins themselves are not much to look at, but enough information is provided to explain the history of the site to answer many questions that a visitor may have. Overall, even though it is a bit out of the way, I would recommend a stop at this historic site if you have time.

Squirrel Point Light is located on the east side of the Kennebec River approximately 10 miles from Bath. The path is well marked but there are some roots along the way to be careful of. We saw a deer. The lighthouse and keepers house are not open to visitors and are in need of some repair. Citizens for Squirrel Point is a nonprofit which is working to preserve the buildings and the grounds of this historic lighthouse. The river view is pretty from the lighthouse. The is a small parking area at the beginning of the trail.

We love swinging bridges so we made sure to make a stop at this one. It happened to be raining when…read morewe were on our way through this area but we didn't let that stop us. If anything, the fact that it was dusk and the rain was so gentle, kind of made the whole experience feel more visceral and intimate. The bridge itself is really beautiful with great views of the river on both sides. There's definitely enough movement so that you don't forget you're on a swinging bridge, but it didn't feel unsafe and even our little dog was fine walking back and forth across it. My husband and I hung out in the middle for a while, enjoying the views, cuddled in the cool wet air. It was actually pretty romantic. We probably spent about 15 or 20 minutes here and in that time multiple people crossed the bridge and at least five or six stopped to take photos in front of it, including a group of 4 that asked us to take their photo for them (pictured below) so this is a busy area even in the rain. But once you're here, you know why because it's a pretty cool experience. I definitely recommend a quick stop here if you can make the time.

Just at the very tail end of the day, we raced to see our final lighthouse of this Saturday tour…read more Arriving just at sunset, it is located at the end of about a mile or so of dirt road that could use some love from the local town transportation department. Yes, it's private property. And if they want to keep people off it, they can do what the folks at the Hendrick's Head Light did - post signs and enforce them. Located on the Kennebec River, the lighthouse was established in 1898 and remains an active aid to navigation today. It points out a sharp turn in the river for those going to or from the Bath Iron Works. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The light station includes a tower, keeper's house, shed, and oil house. The tower is an octagonal wood frame structure, finished in wooden shingles, with an iron walkway around the lantern chamber. It is accessed via a three-span footbridge. Around the base of the lighthouse, there are some spots where you can walk out to get different angles. I have no idea how or why such an arrangement arose, but it is is odd to say the least. Also, the access road is not not well maintained so be aware. Wear comfortable and sturdy shoes, I'd advise some trainers or sporty shoes - NOT sandals or flip flops. The walk is worth it, it's a gorgeous lighthouse! Please be careful!

There were plenty of parking and only a few people here. The View was absolutely breath taking. The sun was slowly making its away up on the beautiful water. The sound of the ocean waves against the rocks, the ocean breeze smell were absolutely magnificent. There is even a bench for you set and enjoy the sun rise. It was truly peaceful and definitely made my morning. Highly recommend coming here.

On July 19th, 1984 the incredibly unique and more than 1,000-foot long latticed Bailey Island…read moreCribstone Bridge - created specifically to withstand the wind and waves of the Atlantic (which can be much harsher in the spaces between islands) - was dedicated as a historic civil engineering landmark (it's also listed on the National Register of Historic Places). Yes, it's a bridge. But it's unlike any other bridge you'll ever drive across. It comes out of seemingly nowhere on Route 24, feels EXTREMELY narrow and like it sits VERY close to the actual ocean, and is at just enough of a curve to make things feel dramatic if you're driving even a tad too speedily (SO SLOOOOOOOOW DOWN). And I love ALL of that! It also provides sweeping views of Maine as its most quintessential: ocean, pine trees, lobster boats, buoys, etc. Regardless of when you come: winter for the glorious, sparkling whites and silvers; spring/summer for the thousands of shades of green and blue; or autumn for the ever-breathtaking hues of fiery reds, oranges, and yellows... it's beautiful round these parts.
