We were staying nearby in the area, so it was an easy drive here. This park is small, but has such a rich history. The guys working at the park were super friendly, and one gave us some fun facts about the lighthouse before heading up to the top! Speaking of, going up to the top is really neat. It's a tad bit scary and has a steep, spiral staircase, but has some great views once you get up there. There's also a little room with more on the history. Outside, you can climb around on the rocks to have a great viewing spot of the ocean. You need to come visit this place if you are nearby!

We loved the tour of the lighthouse and the adjacent museum. Open to the public on Monday and Thursday afternoons in July and August. I would say it's one of the best lighthouse tours in Maine. My lovely bride enjoyed it, so it's not just worthwhile for lighthouse foamers.

We love swinging bridges so we made sure to make a stop at this one. It happened to be raining when…read morewe were on our way through this area but we didn't let that stop us. If anything, the fact that it was dusk and the rain was so gentle, kind of made the whole experience feel more visceral and intimate. The bridge itself is really beautiful with great views of the river on both sides. There's definitely enough movement so that you don't forget you're on a swinging bridge, but it didn't feel unsafe and even our little dog was fine walking back and forth across it. My husband and I hung out in the middle for a while, enjoying the views, cuddled in the cool wet air. It was actually pretty romantic. We probably spent about 15 or 20 minutes here and in that time multiple people crossed the bridge and at least five or six stopped to take photos in front of it, including a group of 4 that asked us to take their photo for them (pictured below) so this is a busy area even in the rain. But once you're here, you know why because it's a pretty cool experience. I definitely recommend a quick stop here if you can make the time.

When we found out we would be driving past the world's largest rotating globe, we knew we had to…read morestop. Luckily for us it ended up being late in the evening so it was very dark and quiet and peaceful when we pulled in. Because it was so late we didn't end up going inside, but you really don't need to. We stood for about 15 minutes and watched her through the glass rotating slowly. It's actually quite beautiful to see and it's one of those things where you have to see it in person to really understand it. This could easily have been a 5-minute stop, or if we had come during the day, most likely a much longer stop because I would have wanted to go inside and examine everything close up. If you're driving through the area, especially after dark. It's definitely worth a quick detour. It's simple, unique, and it's way cooler in person than you can tell from the photos.

Eartha is visible from the road and can be visited during business hours. Eartha is the world's largest rotating globe measuring over 41 feet and 5,600 pounds and is to scale. There is a coffee shop in the lobby and chairs around the lobby to sit and admire Eartha. There is educational material on the wall. Eartha is worth a quick stop if traveling between Portland and central/northern Maine

Worth going if you're trying to visit all of the Maine lighthouses, but if you're looking to save…read moresome time for the harder ones, this is one to skip. This structure dates to 1875 and is a private residence for some time. The white tower is 39 feet tall and has a range of 9 nautical miles. It marks the mouth of the Sheepscot River and access to the town of Wiscasset. The lighthouse is entirely on private property that is not open to the public. Clear "no trespassing signs" at the entrance to the driveway warn you not to continue exploring. There is a small parking area at a nearby beach and you can get some decent pictures from there. You can't actually get near Hendrick's Head (as it's on private property) so your options to see it…read moreare: 1) By boat 2) From the small (and nearly non-existent at high tide) nearby beach in West Southport that overlooks Hendricks Harbor; the beach is *very* rocky at some spots (so wear your water shoes), but the waters here are such a lovely shade of teal and, dare I say, even a bit warmer for Atlantic temps! Nice, uncrowded spot to swim at if you know about it! There's plenty of parking on Beach Rd/Lighthouse Ln; when we came it was literally all out of staters, it seemed like they were all staying nearby too. The lighthouse - a tapered, square-shaped wood frame structure with a red light and a red roof on the keeper's house - was built in 1829 to guide ships on the Sheepscot River making their way to the shipbuilding center at Wiscasset Harbor; it was rebuilt in 1875, deactivated in 1933, then relit in 1951. Apparently there's a lot of stories/lore around this particular lighthouse (like one about a child being saved by a lighthouse keeper after some traumatic shipwreck), so it's definitely got some fascinating history!

Admiral Peary (aka the North Pole discoverer among many other things) bought this island, years later he built 2 homes and he and his families spent Spring through Fall there every year. Now it's a Maine State Park. Has working player piano custom made to fit his exploration ship (the Roosevelt), captain's chair from his ship as well as a restored duplicate of his desk. Old family gardens and 3 nature trails across the island with spectacular views. Also some rock gouges from the last glacier. He designed much of the house himself, including a library made of local stones, and a unique 3 sided fire place in the living room!
