My most recent volunteer activity was with my company, so I had a group of folks I knew from my day-to-day life there with me, but you won't always have that. But that means you'll meet a few strangers to turn into new friends! There is a task for any level of expertise. If you're a newbie, you may just be holding a ladder for a bit. If you're a little green but have some experience you may be able to paint some things. If you're an expert and have experience in certain construction things, they may even have you helping to attach doors and put up drywall. These are just examples, but the point is that no matter your skill-set, don't let it keep you from volunteering. The main "construction" of cement pouring and foundation building is obviously done by actual professionals, so you can't do anything that will mess up the house too bad. I definitely recommend volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. While it may be hot (because most builds have been done during the summer in my experience), and some hard work, it can actually be a lot of fun!

If I understand, The Big Garden is responsible for getting them in the ground, so to speak. The Big Garden has developed over 150 local gardens and offers a wide array of services. I have been to a few workshops and plant sales this year. They usually take on some interns come summertime and this year there will be 8 full time eager gardeners. The location allows for so much knowledge and that gets shared with local schools where the kids may see more guns than plants. This spot provides a great respite from those spots. From foraging salads, mushrooms and saving seeds to offering started plants and infinite wisdom, this is the spot. They are Non Profit so when you come by, please drop a few buck their way. In my lifetime, I know what I learn here will be more valuable than currency!

My most recent activity with Food Bank for the Heartland was with my company's leadership building group (Pathfinders), and our volunteering task was packing meal kits for food-insecure students. Our activity leader from the Food Bank was very informative and understanding with any mistakes made by our group or questions we had. You can tell they really care about the mission of the organization, in every step of the process. We each had certain jobs in an assembly line situation, which made it a lot easier to do everything in the correct order so the little meals are packed in the best possible way. If you volunteer with a group of friends or coworkers, you can have fun, while doing good for others. This organization does great things for the community, and are very worthy of your financial contributions or volunteer time!

I have heard countless amazing reviews about Felius from everyone to friends, family, coworkers,…read moreand even someone who used to volunteer with them! I brought my sister for their Saturday kitten yoga and it was seriously one of the best experiences I have ever had in Omaha. I never thought I would get the opportunity to do something like this, so when I saw the listing on their Instagram, I immediately bought tickets. When we arrived at Felius, we were greeted by the friendliest and kindest staff, who were very helpful in guiding us through the process. I had never been so I was not sure what to expect, but I was truly wowed. First of all, the yoga instructor was very kind and helpful, and I felt her yoga routine was very soothing and easy to follow for all ages. I am not necessarily great at yoga but I found it simple to follow along, and I loved her guided meditation and the soothing music that accompanied the workout. The kittens they had in the room were absolutely the cutest and most darling animals I have ever seen, and if anything it was difficult to focus not because they were disruptive, but of how stinking cute they were! At one point a kitten even jumped on my back while in cat/cow pose, and I caught it on video! The kittens and cats were so friendly and well-behaved, and it is evident they are super comfortable around people. By the end we were even given around 30 minutes of play time with them, which is honestly the best deal since there were not many of us! I will be coming back for sure, and bringing my friends too!!!

They service the needs of many hungry and homeless here in Omaha, and also support families of domestic abuse. There are a lot of little things I like about this organization. Off the top of my head: 1- the fact that this is short term and long term living situations here (Lydia house for children and women and the timberlake outreach center for men) 2- they have tutoring classes, coaching, and therapy for you to get a job once you're on you feet 3- free hot meals for hundreds, no questions asked 4- a sustainable garden that residents work in- that goes right to the cafeteria then table and produces a lot!! 5- meals on wheels, I have made millions of sandwich sack lunches that they take out in a van and deliver Much more, but you get the point. They host volunteers all the time, and also sponsor things like adopt a family at Christmas, or turkey deliveries at thanksgiving. This year my office adopted 3 families for Christmas and were responsible to get them necessities and also wish list gifts. It was both rewarding and amazing to know we could make an impact in their lives.
